About ten years ago, Courtney Church was studying to be a personal trainer. Then she realized that “people didn’t want to work out, but they needed their computers fixed.” So she did a 180 on her career, spent 8 years with the Best Buy Geek Squad, then enrolled in a Cisco Networking Academy course at East Carolina State University in Greenville, North Carolina.
“I fell in love with it the first day,” Courtney says of Networking Academy. “I’ve always had a passion for figuring out how computers and technology work.”
This week, Courtney joined 25 other Networking Academy students from the United States and Canada at Cisco Live – our annual customer and partner education event – to help a team of Cisco engineers maintain the massive computer network that supports more than 20,000 conference attendees.

I recently sat down with Arvind Hickman of HR Magazine UK to discuss the skills gap in the technology sector. We talked about the challenges of filling the critical technology slots that business demands, particularly in developed countries, where the biggest gaps exist.
Cisco has been proactive in surveying the global market, forecasting each country’s future requirements for technology talent and engaging to close the skills gap. We invest in the areas where supply would otherwise fall short of demand, and we work with colleges, the military, and with public -- private partnerships to build the needed training and certification programs. We also recruit people early on, either before college or while in college, to consider technology careers in areas such as security, networking, data analytics and cloud.

In a time when the manufacturing industry is in dire need of new employees as more and more baby boomers move to retire, I find it interesting that more than 50 percent of 2011 college graduates are either jobless or underemployed (AP Report). To me the numbers don’t add up. Sure, at first glance, it’s easy to blame the poor economy for the unemployment rate, but try considering reasons beyond that. What are the real reasons many college graduates are unemployed? I don’t necessarily think it’s because there aren’t jobs, because in the manufacturing industry, there are plenty. Some have estimated there are hundreds of thousands of jobs that are going unfilled in manufacturing in the US alone; jobs that are good-paying and that can be the foundation and means for someone to attain their “American Dream”.
As I reflect on this information, a couple of things come to mind. Kids growing up today are expected to go to college and graduate. This is great, but over the past few years, we have seen more and more students going to college without a well thought out career in mind. They all have aspirations to be “successful” and have a “dream job” once they graduate, but many students are never really able to untangle what that dream job looks like. This can lead to four or more years of education along with college debt without a clear career path. Read More »
