What is ‘digital’?

How would you define ‘digital’?  As a communication channel or method?  A convenience enabler?  1s & 0s?  The inverse of analog? Bits versus atoms? Something we can no longer live without?

I am often asked ‘what is digital’? … ‘is it just our website, or broader than that?’ … ‘what exactly do you mean?’

So, I asked around to find out the word-on-the-street around ‘digital’.  I was impressed with how many different, nuanced, and insightful answers I was given on the definition — I had to put it all together into a video in order to capture the rich and diverse viewpoints.  In the video, you can learn what others think ‘digital’ is, as well as how we define it.

It’s hard to believe another calendar year is coming to an end less than 2 months. I’m amazed at the pace of which digital and social media continue to evolve and get excited when I think of what 2014 might bring in the way of further surprises.

As we continue to plan for the coming year and look for ways to continue growing the Cisco Social Media Training and Enablement program, I’ve been researching various 2014 digital and social media trends. From the “Top 7 Social Media Marketing Trends That will Dominate 2014” (from @Forbes) to the “6 Social Media Trends That will Impact You in 2014” (from @B2Community), there is a lot of speculation to weed through. Cisco CMX Analytics in use at CiscoLive! Orlando

Editor’s Note: This blog post was co-written by Dr. Brendan O’Brien, who is authoring the post, and Dr. James Little, technical lead for CMX Analytics in Cisco’s Wireless Networking Group.

This year’s CiscoLive! in Orlando with over 20000 visitors was  selected as an ideal opportunity to test and prove CMX Analytics over a large venue with high volume usage.

This year’s CiscoLive! was spread over two huge venues of the Orange County Convention Centre and the Peabody Hotel between June 23rd-27th. Over two and a half days, approximately 40,000 different devices were detected using CMX Analytics. (This figure is not uncommon any longer, assuming 50% of people had WiFi on and most of us had 2 or more devices)

The main purpose of the Wi-Fi network at CiscoLive! is to provide a high quality service to all  attendees, providing CMX Analytics with its toughest test yet. With a peak of around 15,000 connected devices on the opening day serviced by 750 access points and 1500 radios, the challenge was to see how well CMX could take the raw numbers and translate it into insights on the movements of the delegates.

Let me break down some of the reports for you:

In the table above, CMX Analytics shows:

  • The second floor being busier than the 1st, 3rd or 4th during lunchtime. as expected with the catering facilities located there.
  • The World of Solutions was also busy over this period as it was a break between sessions.
