Delivering High Value Cloud Services in a World of Many Clouds

Businesses and Governments are using multiple clouds in different ways. They are moving core functions in to a controlled private or managed cloud. But they are still using public clouds for new services, content and demand spikes. Some large enterprises are becoming specialized cloud providers for smaller businesses, while traditional providers are using different clouds for different tiers of service. These trends are leading to a world of many clouds with numerous service choices from a variety of cloud vendors. For example IT organizations can:

  • Offload complexity and access specialized services (e.g. Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure, Collaboration)
  • Share vertical expertise and Intellectual property across data centers (e.g. Regulatory compliance, Data clearinghouse)
  • Leverage a Provider’s Capacity for unplanned Demand (e.g. Disaster recovery, Seasonal IT surge)
  • Access network-optimized-clouds to deliver content reliably (e.g. Content distribution, Mobile streaming) Read More »

Get Moving to V6 World Congress 2013

ginaBy Gina Nienaber, Marketing Manager, Service Provider (SP) Marketing Routing and Switching

The theme of this year’s V6 World Congress, happening in Paris, March 19-22, is “Going Mobile.” With the advent of the Internet of Everything and the proliferation of mobile devices well underway, there will be a lot to talk about. And this year, you will have the unique opportunity to hear from leading service providers, including Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile, who have already made the transition to IPv6 in their mobile networks.

Now that IPv6 has solidly claimed the role as the connective protocol of the future, this event is expected to attract a record number of attendees from around the world. As a sponsor, Cisco will have a strong presence on the three-day agenda and is also hosting a technical tutorial, which will give you the chance to meet one-on-one with Cisco technology experts.

Taking Carrier Ethernet To Another Level: Cisco CE 2.0 Certification Pioneer

BirenProfilePicture-e1349971468612-300x369By Biren Mehta, Senior Marketing Manager, SP Marketing in Routing and Switching, Cisco

Have you ever tried to order a pizza that 20 different people would enjoy?  Just imagine getting twenty companies to agree upon a vigorous test plan that included over 600 test cases! (No easy cop-out by just getting plain cheese here…).  Big kudos go out to the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) for the launch of the Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE 2.0) certification program and to the first wave of MEF CE 2.0 certified companies.

The MEF certification of Carrier Ethernet equipment and services is of significant value to network operators.  The certification establishes a standard for delivering carrier-grade Ethernet services, speeds deployment of new services, and creates interoperable trust in a multi-vendor multi-operator network environment. MEF CE 2.0 greatly expands Ethernet services and further advances the industry through standardization of interconnectivity. Improvements include extending the Ethernet services reach, multiple classes of services for optimized mobile backhaul delivery, and greater manageability for delivery of differentiated applications over managed networks globally. Multiscreen Video Delivery: Tangled Solutions, Smoothed by the Cloud

bill-Gerhardt11By Bill Gerhardt, Director, IBSG Service Provider

Online video is growing at a rapid — if not explosive — pace, with innovation and disruption spreading across all areas of the value chain. Some of the greatest innovation is currently occurring around multiscreen delivery and related services.

To better understand the climate for video consumption, in March, 2012 the Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG) surveyed 1,152 U.S. broadband consumers between the ages of 13 and 75+ to gain a better understanding of how they watch video: their habits, preferences, and the devices they use.

The study found that consumers spend more time watching Internet video today than watching DVDs/Blu-ray Discs, video on demand (VoD), or live premium cable channels — and they want to watch streaming video across a variety of screens. In the future, multiscreen delivery will take on greater importance as laptops, tablets, and smartphones advance and become even better video devices.

Service providers must address these Read More »

Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire Intucell

Today, I am pleased to announce Cisco’s intent to acquire Intucell, a privately held company headquartered in Ra’anana, Israel for $475 million in cash and employee retention incentives. Intucell provides software platforms for Self-Optimized Network (SON) that support mobile carrier networks worldwide.

This acquisition will allow Cisco to extend network intelligence and tightly align different software elements across our product portfolio. It also reinforces our commitment to service provider customers and strengthens our expertise in mobility.  In addition, the acquisition of Intucell furthers our long-standing commitment to cutting-edge innovation based in Israel.

The proliferation of connected mobile devices, faster network speeds, and growing demand for high-bandwidth applications and services are driving greater network traffic and complexity.  As mobile service providers continue to face increased end-user demand, the need to dynamically manage network bandwidth, usage and services is increasing. Intucell’s SON software platform addresses these challenges by examining the network, identifying issues, and intelligently managing network traffic in real time.  This capability brings enormous value to service providers and their customers.

The Intucell team’s deep expertise in software, radio management and optimization technologies have made it a global leader in solving some of the most complex challenges faced by mobile service providers.

Intucell’s product portfolio will be integrated into our Service Provider Mobility Group. The team will report into the Software and Applications Group led by Shailesh Shukla.
