Video Helps Schools Reach and Teach Students More Effectively— Despite Tighter Budgets

By Joel Barbier, Cisco® Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG)

Educators face a number of challenges, from increased pressure to improve student performance on standardized tests to shrinking state and local budgets. In addition, instructors are leaving their classrooms for better opportunities, and students’ learning skills are tuned more to social media and new technologies than to traditional educational models. These challenges require that institutions transform the way they retain talent—and the way they reach and teach students.

Although they have used recorded videos for many years to introduce new experiences to students, and some have started employing web-based video technologies to save travel costs, most educational institutions do not understand the critical role video can play in scaling resources to improve education quality despite budget constraints. Unified Fabric : Cisco Technology Executives Are Answering Your Questions

October 17, 2011 at 12:31 pm PST

On October 25 at 9:00 am PST/ 12:00 pm EST , join a very special webcast  “Evolutionary Fabric. Revolutionary Scale “ with customers, analysts and Cisco executives and experts for conversations about the benefits of Cisco Unified Fabric .

I asked the other day our favorite bloggers Omar Sultan, Brian Gracely and Shashi Kiran to tell me why they think this webcast is important for our customers

“There is a lot going on in the data center these days – There is a continue expansion of virtualization , we see broader adoption of cloud and we see emerging trends, big data being the newest and trendiest of the hot data center topics – So there are folks out there who will tell you, you know what each of these needs special equipment, they have unique requirements , your regular infrastructure will not be able to handle these requirements So what we do believe is that each of these requirements, big data, cloud have their own specific needs , we truly don’t believe that you need purpose built hardware , at least if your infrastructure is built the right way “ Omar Sultan

So this webcast is really about learning how Cisco’s fabric-based approach delivers architectural flexibility across physical, virtual and cloud environments for any application.

For Brian Gracely the equation is simple to remember  : Cisco Unified FABRIC is Fast, Agile, Best of breed, Resiliant, Innovative, Cisco-based

Lost in Social Media: Phase 4 – Operationalizing & Scaling Social Media #lostinsm

July 29, 2011 at 11:31 am PST

This is another post that’s suited for your coffee or tea break so grab a bag of biscotti!

A few months ago, I started a series on the evolution of social media adoption within an organization. Phase 1 talked about the Missing (which I introduced earlier as the Mistrusting), phase 2 discussed experimentation, and in phase 3, the Integrators learned the importance of looking at social media as part of the bigger picture. The difference between stage 3 and stage 4 practitioners is the level of sophistication, spread within the organization and access to resources.

PHASE 4 PRACTITIONERS

The Integrators know how to bring together the various components to achieve a shorter term marketing goal but phase 4 practitioners know how to use the selected tools across their programs and activities, and connect with their audience on a deeper level. They have a much clearer understanding of their careabouts. Their conversations feel more natural, human and well, more conversational. They understand that content needs to be a combination of industry, everyday and company topics -- and know how to do it. They understand that each channel needs to have its own purpose and its own deliverables -- and know how to do it. They are in it for the long haul and look at social media more strategically and holistically.

There is a fundamental change in their approach: Read More »

Does the Data Center Provide an Advantage for Government?

Today, as I watched the Cisco Data Center webcast “Evolutionary Fabric, Revolutionary Scale: A Nondisruptive Way to Handle Dynamic Data Center and Cloud Environments” I thought about how data centers can provide an advantage for government agencies seeking ways to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs.

In many ways, data centers today have similar characteristics when compared to government organizations with:

  • isolated silos of information
  • labor-intensive manual processes
  • rising costs of service
  • limited flexibility
  • mandates to provide open access to information
  • changing workplace with mobile applications, video, …
  • requirements to ensure security

In the data center, silos include servers, storage, applications, and network devices.  In many government organizations, different agencies often operate independently in separate silos.

The strategic advantage for both government IT organizations and government agencies is to develop holistic strategies that unify the separate parts into a system to deliver better efficiency with higher resource utilization that is easier to manage and costs less.
