The future fascinates me. I grew up reading Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Kurt Vonnegut. And watching every sci-fi movie that came out. Robots, aliens, utopia, dystopia – I loved it all. Today, imagining what the future looks like is a big part of my job.
In June, I got to participate in a futurist session at Cisco Live where I had to make one prediction about what the year 2025 would be like. (See Ambient Computing below or watch the recording at 31:31.)
Now I have the chance to speak about the “Intelligent Future” at SXSW Interactive 2016 with my friend Colin Angle, CEO of iRobot (maker of the Roomba vacuum cleaner robot). Our panel, “Robots Taking Over at Work: Why It’s a Good Thing,” is in the running for the event. If you’d like to hear why we think robotics and augmented reality are on their way to the workplace, take a minute to vote using the SXSW Panelpicker.
I believe the world of tomorrow will be dramatically different from today. Here are some of the futurist concepts that have been knocking around in my head lately: Read More »

Welcome to our latest #SocialRoundup blog series about new social media efforts and best practices. Today, we want to highlight #CiscoChat, our new social media chat program that has been picking up steam recently. The concept was simple: create a standard method for our customers, partners, influencers and employees to engage with Cisco and each other in real time through a single hashtag.
We’ve held three chats to-date, involving hundreds of participants and resulting in nearly 20 million impressions. And we’ve only just begun. Check out highlights from recent #CiscoChat events below.
What Empowers You To Be Fearless?
This #CiscoChat was hosted by the Women of Impact team and joined together Catalina Kowal from Cisco’s Empowered Women’s Network, Cindy Cooley from Cisco’s Men for Inclusion, and Barbara Koch from the Passion Project to discuss how being fearless isn’t really about eliminating fear from our everyday lives completely, but more about finding ways to make our fears not hinder us from being adventurous, from taking risks, from getting up after we fall down, or from being our own advocates. See the full #CiscoChat recap on Storify.

Every year at the SXSW Interactive Conference, tens of thousands gather in Austin, Texas to get a first look at what’s new in innovative technology. And while the atmosphere this year was festive, it’s safe to assume that many attendees were trying to stay connected and get work done on-the-go with colleagues back in the office.
While email and conference calls have long been the staples of business communication, the reality is that people on-the-go, whose mobile devices are their business lifelines, need solutions that make it simple and easy to work together from anywhere. Since Cisco was on the ground with attendees at SXSW, it was the perfect opportunity to not only hear how they collaborate, but also discuss the future of collaboration and find out directly from users what they are looking for.
While we think collaboration is the best thing since sliced bread – or in Austin, taco trucks – we wanted to hear how users describe it: how do they use it, how does it help them, what do they wish it could do? Because Cisco Spark is so easy to put in the hands of users, we asked people to try it out. Read More »

The Cisco social media marketing team was on the ground in Austin for the SXSW Interactive Conference and the second ever #CiscoChat. The team engaged with participants onsite and over social media, teeing up an announcement around our new collaboration service–Cisco Spark–by asking participants how they collaborate with coworkers on the go.
We also had several influencers join us onsite, including former Mashable co-editor and CAPTIOLOGY author Ben Parr. Always keeping a finger on the pulse of new platforms and trends, Ben answered questions with us live and streamed the event on Meerkat to nearly 100 attendees.
Throughout the day, we saw hundreds of mentions of #CiscoChat, which went trending on Twitter in Austin!

What if we could change learning in the classroom to better suit students’ needs and accommodate individual learning styles? That’s exactly what Denton Independent School District in Texas is doing through flipped learning and collaborative video technology.
In his recent blog, Barry Fox describes what the future of education looks like at Denton ISD, and the potential for other school districts throughout the country to adopt a similar model. Through flipped learning, students experience a rich virtual classroom experience, with video-based material made available to students from any location through multiple devices, bringing learning beyond the classroom. This provides the flexibility desired by students, enabling them to easily connect with teachers, re-watch content and learn at their own pace.
Help us share the Denton ISD story of championing student-teacher relationships at next year’s SXSW. Vote for our panel at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/23959.
