Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust

Data Privacy Day is January 28, and this year’s theme examines issues around respecting privacy, protecting data and enabling trust. Today more than ever, any global company is a digitized company, which means that every company is grappling with challenges around privacy, security and trust. As a result, these challenges are no longer an IT-only responsibility and now must be addressed by everyone: vendor, customer, partner, board member and end-user alike.

While many security and privacy trends facing global companies today may appear to start out as local, some quickly become global. As many industry observers know, a significant number of these trends are starting in Europe.

For example, the Global Data Protection Regulation announced in October 2015 is one of the biggest legal developments in data privacy and security in the past 20 years. While the law still has to go through the parliamentary process in Europe, it is expected to be a game changer for how privacy is protected legally worldwide. This law is introducing new notions about how both citizens think about their data and how companies are obligated to protect it.

Summary: What Partners Need to Know Before Selling into the Healthcare Sector

Consider the following facts:  In the US, the street value of a stolen social security or credit card number is about $1, and it can be sold for only a few days after it’s been stolen.  By comparison, a stolen medical record number has a street value of $50 and can be exploited over a much longer period of time.  HIPPA and HITECH are the US version of “privacy and security” laws that are getting so much attention in the global healthcare information technologies industry.

Conversations about Cloud – “What about my Data?”

This week I had a separate discussion with a CIO of a large manufacturing company about Cisco’s Cloud Computing strategy and how we could help them with an upcoming transition in their Data Center equipment and facilities. My their own admission, they are a fairly conservative company and asked me to avoid any hype or hyperbole in this discussion. They just wanted to talk about the current state of IT.

I started the conversation with two pictures that I often use:

I always let customers know that the reality of today is there are many legitimate ways to deliver Cloud Computing services as an IT organization. Some of them can come from your internal systems (“Private Cloud”), some will come from commodity Cloud services (“Public Cloud”), some will come via Service Providers and Hosting Providers, and others may come from the SaaS offerings that Cisco provides (eg. WebEx, ScanSafe, etc.). The key to all of this is to determine what services their users, partners and business need, and then evaluate where to best deliver the IT services from. Some choices will be driven by time-to-market, others by cost, and still others by industry or government regulations. In the long-run, we fully expect that most customers’ IT portfolio will be delivered through a mix of Private and Public services. Cisco plays a critical role in this because of our experience helping customers through IT transitions for the past 20+ years, and because of the critical role the network plays in delivering Highly Available, Secure and Mobility-Aware experiences to users on any device or in any location.
