The model is changing. Think about how personal electronics have changed your life. Do you listen to a CD in your car anymore? I remember back when I drove a “company car” but they allowed me to add things, and I added a 6 CD changer. It was in my trunk. This was in 1996. Do they even put CD changers in cars today? My wife just bought a new 4DSC, and ya know, there is no CD slot. So if we go for a trip I have to listen to her music. Fortunately we have a mesh.
So, huge changes in the music business model. Same for the book industry. Witness this: when we leave for a weekend I take my iPad. I have several books I want to read stored there. Are they on my iPad or the Cloud? I don’t care. I want them when I want them. And before today’s technology existed I would have needed to carry many different books with me. In my case today they are on my iPad, but tomorrow? Who knows? Can I get instant response from the cloud? I bet I can.
In the factory can you afford to ignore the cloud? You know your employees in the plant are going to be using devices that are far more advanced than what they have in the factory. I was thinking about all the supply chain agility issues Santa would have this year – probably the same every year. Like the fact that he has to deliver to hundreds of millions of folks on one particular day of the year.
He’s been doing this for hundreds of years with only one workshop -- not located anywhere near any major distribution routes and with a small but obviously highly productive workforce. Add to this his orders come in only a few weeks before 25th December – some on the 24th! And somehow he hasn’t any carry over stock on the 26th. Miss the 25th and you’ve had it!
Downside of this squeeze is that you can often get that same ol’ pair of socks, that boring polyester tie or that colorful sweater that you’ll never wear. Maybe even a lump of coal if you’re really unlucky. So here’s a message to Santa… Read More »

All of our families experienced working with the ūmi. We are grandparents and have children and grandchildren who live a distance from us – Spokane, WA, San Diego, CA, and Silver Spring, MD. Because of this, we are not able to travel to visit them very often. Through the magic of umi, we have been able to “visit” on a weekly basis and have been able to solidify the bond with our children and grandchildren, and them to us. One of the grandchildren told me recently that “in the past, we hardly ever saw you, but now we can see you all the time”. The HD video makes it so vivid, like they really in the same room with you.
Some of the things we have been able to do is play charades with each other, watch the younger grandchildren practice their new “dance moves”, have funny face contests, listen to mini recitals of children as they played their instrument, share in the excitement of displaying new clothes, watch an enthusiastic explanation from a 10 yr. old of what she had learned at school about photography, and how cameras take pictures and invert the image.
