It’s six in the morning, and the alarm is blaring – it can only mean one thing. It’s my first day at Cisco!

Waking up that morning, I really didn’t know what to expect from a company like Cisco. I was curious to know if it’d be everything I dreamed it would be, would I enjoy my time at Cisco?

Would I fit it? The answer so far has been, “Yes!”

Cisco truly lives up to being one of the best places to work – “be you, with us” isn’t just a saying here. They really live and breathe that mantra. And I as wrap up my first week at Cisco, this is what I’ve learned:

Be yourself.

Cliché, right? But, I’ve experienced this first hand, and I can already see how true this holds at Cisco. This isn’t the type of company where you hide those quirky qualities about yourself. Why would you? At Cisco your unique personality is celebrated, encouraged, and maybe even utilized! This experience is truly so much better once you share with others and I am happy I can work in a place where I don’t have to hide who I am.

Fun fact: You can be taken seriously as a professional while having fun. Cisco knows this all too well.

Be inquisitive and curious.

There’s a lot you may not know about Cisco, or maybe a perception you’ve already formed – but being inquisitive and curious can open so many doors here! Inquisition and curiosity shows a will to learn, and there may be no better quality to have while we’re all doing our best to innovate the future.

My time here at Cisco will unfortunately come to a quick end in August, but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn and take away a whole lot in that time! For me, being inquisitive and curious means being unafraid to explore the unknown and working non-stop to get those answers. So I encourage you to never stop being curious.

Ask questions and communicate!

Just when you think you’re out of questions, three more pop up – ask them! Questions range from, “Where is the cafeteria,” “What does CDA mean,” and, “Is there anything else I can do?” These questions, although helpful in many different ways, show a willingness to communicate.

It helps you make the most out of your experience and really get to know the company you’re working for. Additionally, it leads to opportunity – the opportunity to try something new! After all, isn’t that what this internship is all about? You’ll never know unless you ask –  so ask!

Make meaningful relationships.

There is more to an internship than just sitting at a computer all day cranking out work or using WebEx for meetings. In my experience, not only does Cisco encourage you to talk to people, they foster the environment to make it easy to do so. You sit in the same room with all your peers, and if they are not right next to you, I can ensure you they are no more than a minute walk away from your desk – or a quick WebEx or Jabber ping away!

One thing I quickly realized is that everyone is very willing to help you. So put yourself out there! Say good morning to that random guy in the elevator, talk to everyone (even if they aren’t in your respective department) and dare to make those meaningful relationships! You never know who you’ll meet!

This is so much more than just a job.

Cisco is a company that many people have come to know as the worldwide leader in IT and networking. It is truly humbling to work at a company with such credentials, but it is much more humbling to work at a company that cares. Cisco cares about the environment, their employees, the world around them, and even me. Yes, just me.

Cisco is the type of company that pays attention to all the details so even when you might not see a place for yourself, they are always one step ahead. Although some people may think that this would make you feel small – I feel a greater purpose thanks to Cisco.

I for one, am proud to be a part of Cisco and can’t wait to see where this internship will take me. No matter where you go in life, I hope you open yourself to new opportunities and take pride in where you work. And, most of all, I hope you get the chance to work at Cisco – a company that encourages all I’ve mentioned and so much more.

Open yourself up to new opportunities NOW! Apply to Intern at Cisco!

Cybersecurity skills are in high demand, and employers are challenged with finding the right talent to build their expanding workforce needs. At the same time, thousands of veterans are looking to apply their unique skills as they transition to civilian jobs. At Cisco, we see this as an opportunity to build a bridge between a targeted talent pipeline and our ecosystem of employers and partners.

On June 26, over 70 veterans attended the Virginia Veterans Cyber Training (VVCT) orientation at the Quantico Corporate Center, located across from of Quantico Marine Base, one of the largest Marine Corps installations in the United States. The VVCT, pioneered by Cisco, is a free accelerated online program offering cyber training from Cisco, Amazon Web Services, (ISC)2, Palo Alto Networks, and Fortinet. These companies, who in some cases are also direct business competitors, have come together for a common cause to provide veterans access to learning pathways which lead to industry-recognized certifications.

“Veterans can turn their service to country into a different kind of service – protecting vital systems, networks and infrastructure,” says Wesley Simpson, COO, (ISC)2. Maj. General (retired) John Davis, VP and Federal Chief Security Officer at Palo Alto Networks adds, “We believe veterans are well-positioned to pursue a career in cyber because their military experience equips them with transferable skills, including vital leadership qualities, which can be applied to developing the latest cybersecurity innovation.”

VVCT is available to veterans, transitioning service members, reservists, National Guard, and military spouses representing all branches of the military. Participants gain access to the training after completing a prerequisite 15-hour online Intro to Cybersecurity course through the Cisco Networking Academy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCRsLuoMgOU&index=12&list=PLE26FB7E4EE7B806E&t=15s

Once enrolled in the program, they receive mentoring support and career resources to help connect them to local employment opportunities through VVCT delivery partners Onward to Opportunity (O2O), Yyotta, and Tech2000. Cisco’s two offerings for VVCT include CCNA Security and CCNA Cyber Ops, the new certification program introduced in connection with the company’s $10 Million Global Cybersecurity Scholarship Program.

VVCT was originally announced by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe on November 11, 2016 (Veterans Day) as part of the Commonwealth’s goal to fill the 17,000-plus open cyber jobs in Virginia. The first class started in March at Naval Station Norfolk. In addition to the June Quantico class, there will be two other classes available this Fall.

The goal of the pilot program is to train approximately 200 veterans by the end of 2017 who want to live and work in Virginia’s cyber industry and secure employment for those that complete their training. With regard to employment, we will be working with Virginia Values Veterans (V3), a state organization consisting of approximately 700 Virginia employers, the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), and the Cisco Networking Academy Talent Bridge program, which matches qualified IT talent with our many channel partners and distributors.

Upon completion of the VVCT pilot, we will engage the Commonwealth of Virginia help to expand the program into a statewide initiative. We will also introduce the VVCT model to other states seeking cyber-skilled workers.

Download the VVCT Program Overview here

Related to the growing demand for cyber training, the National Governor Association’s “Meet the Threat” Cyber Summit took place in Leesburg, Virginia this June. The event brought together hundreds of thought leaders, private sector experts, and teams from more than 20 states to discuss innovative practices and solutions to cyber threats.

I was privileged to participate in a panel entitled “Expanding the Cyber Talent Pool,” which emphasized the need to focus on developing talent and the broad experience many service members have received while working in cyber-related military billets.  This future talent pipeline is one in which we need to continue to invest, and VVCT is focused on delivering qualified candidates to help meet the demand.

Cisco Integrated Solution for Microsoft Azure Stack

Microsoft Azure Stack represents  the next generation hybrid cloud platform.   If you do not have a cloud solution today, chances are it is not too far on your horizon.   IDC predicts that 84% of business will have multiple cloud solutions within their data center environment, but only 3% of enterprises have implemented and deployed a cloud strategy.

Consider these questions:

  • How do you get ready for a cloud implementation in your data center?
  • How do you make sure you choose a platform capable of handling the multiple cloud solutions IDC says business will have?
  • Will the vendors you choose be around 5 years from now?
  • How do you make sure that the information you put into the cloud will be secure and protect the customer and partner data that you have gathered?
  • When should you  pull the trigger for what will be a cloud strategy for my next generation data center?

These are questions that data center managers are asking every day.  Cisco has the answers.

How do you get ready for a cloud implementation in your data center?

The real question is can your network scale in order to handle the additional work loads brought on by accommodating multiple cloud solutions.   Your network traffic becomes your bottleneck to the future.   Since Cisco is the leading networking company on the planet, if your network is Cisco based, then you have taken the first step to prepare.

How do you make sure that you choose a platform capable of handling the multiple cloud solutions?

It is all about the right infrastructure – from network to server solutions for hybrid cloud deployments.  Cisco continues to lead in cloud ready enterprise network solutions. Cisco UCS is deployed in over 60,000 global customer installations because Cisco ships an innovative solution that unifies compute, network, storage access, management and virtualization into one integrated platform. UCS solutions eliminate complexity and increase business agility; the same capabilities designed into the Cisco Integrated Solution for Microsoft Azure Stack.

Will the solution you choose be around 5 years from now?

You can have confidence in your IT environment supported by Cisco and Microsoft who have a proven record as innovators and trusted technology partners and are the market leaders in hybrid cloud infrastructures.

How do you make sure that the information you put into the cloud will be secure and protect your customer and partner data?

The answer here is you need to be able to Analyze, Simplify, Automate and Protect it.   Cisco provides a compete architectural design that will analyze your data, automate policies, simplify your deployments resulting in unmatched security of your entire data center and operations.

When do I pull the trigger for what will be my next generation data center?

Microsoft announced Azure Stack at Microsoft Inspire on July 10.  Now is a good time to move your data center into the hybrid cloud world.   Whether you are a candidate for a public cloud, or a private cloud on your premise, or a hybrid cloud, Cisco and Microsoft can help you bring your data center into the cloud era.

In established companies, people are the biggest cost—as well as the biggest asset.

As banks compete for the best talent, many are realizing they need to re-examine the fundamentals of how they operate.

Even traditional financial institutions built on top-down process and authority are looking for ways for employees to drive informed, collaborative decision-making.

What is collaborative decision-making?

Collaborative decision-making is a process by which a group reaches a consensus based on collective intelligence through information sharing and open communication, often enabled by collaboration technologies. Decisions develop free from the constraints of tradition and authority. The environment is safe, democratic, and often virtual. Team members have opportunities for critical review, self-critique, discussion, and voting.1

Participants in the decision-making process are more likely to feel involved, satisfied, and valued.1 Team members are also more committed to a decision when they play a role in its development.2

Today, a powerful way to encourage collaborative decision-making is through collaboration technologies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e04TD9bYNk

4 Reasons why rethinking your relationship with email can benefit your employees

Relying on email can be draining for your employees. According to Deloitte, employees spend 25% of the average workday answering emails. By introducing collaboration technology, you can reduce dependency on email—and encourage collaborative decision-making. Here are some of the benefits.

  1. You can break away from traditional hierarchies

Technologies like email align with traditional organizational structure and decision-making processes and are less agile.  Often, institutional knowledge is housed in individual email inboxes and hard drives, inaccessible to everyone on the team.

Collaboration platforms encourage a seamless flow of ideas from all contributors, a basic tenet of collaborative decision-making. Email becomes less important (or maybe even unnecessary) when the right mix of employees can meet in a safe virtual environment.

Collaboration technologies also allow you to bypass traditional chains of communication and reporting for greater transparency, as well as assess contributions based on merit.

  1. You can kick-start innovation

Many employees dedicate multiple decades of their career to one bank. After a while, workdays become routine, and information becomes siloed with certain people and groups who have “always done it.” These silos can decrease agility, stagnate communication, and make processes more frustrating to navigate.

Collaboration tools can help employees communicate across teams. A passing idea beyond an employee’s typical role can help inspire someone else. You’re also able to quickly loop in additional team members as needed, or bring new employees up to speed quickly.

  1. You can create a collective mental toolbox

Team collaboration platforms can serve as a “collective mental toolbox” where documents can be shared, video calls can take place, historical communications can be tracked, content can be posted and searched, and communications take place via text, voice, or video. As a result, employees can spend less time figuring out what the latest conversation is, where the newest version of the document is, or who “owns” what file on their hard drive.

“If you have the right people around the table with the right expertise from a variety of backgrounds, if you ask the right question and you can help facilitate that, there is no question that something good is going to come out of that discussion. Figure out how to do that virtually, whether it is around the planet or around the country, with the most expert employees.”

–Jeff Watts, Former Head of Global Innovation, Property & Casualty, AIG

  1. You can take a vote

Instead of relying on the approval of multiple layers of management after multiple meetings (with a slide presentation for each phase of the project), decision-making can take place inside group voting applications.

The better voting apps like Ranktab display shared wisdom and resources inside a visual platform and can be added to collaborative technologies via chatbots. Using algorithms, the app enables groups to drive collective decision-making by voting on multiple criteria and to understand the evaluation of each criterion by others in the group, discuss decisions, and view consensus decisions in a graphical format.

Success story: How one credit union made collaboration work

Diverse employees with varied skills, experience, and perspectives can be a major differentiator if you know how to make the most of their talent resources. The Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) in Raleigh, NC, saw a need to break down silos to help accelerate and enhance interaction among employees.

“We have a strong desire to continuously extend the capabilities of our infrastructure, meet employees’ expectations, and give them the tools to help them think outside the box about how to better serve our members,” said Terry Phelps, Senior VP of Management Information Systems for LGFCU.

Since the credit union installed an integrated collaboration platform (that includes web conferencing, video conferencing, instant messaging, advanced contact center capabilities, and a secure, intelligent, wireless network), Phelps has seen their workforce grow more efficient. “We have raised internal service levels and are seeing a 25 percent increase in productivity and employee collaboration,” he said.

Real-World Testing to Inform Your NGFW Buying Decision

We’re excited to share with you the latest NSS Labs NGFW test results. In the most rigorous independent NGFW testing to date, Cisco outperformed eight competitors in security effectiveness, blocking 100% of evasions and surpassing four vendors by over 50 points. You can download the reports to get the details. For the fourth year in a row, Cisco Firepower NGFW earned a “Recommended” rating from NSS Labs.

The NSS evaluation underscores three things you should consider when selecting a NGFW.

1. Blocking Evasions

The first is why blocking evasions matters. A 100% block rate for evasions means that you are protected against stealthy attacks that slip through other vendors’ NGFWs. NSS Labs described the implications of failing to detect an evasion best:

“…it allows an attacker to use an entire class of exploits for which the device is assumed to have protection. This renders the device virtually useless.”

All it takes is one successful evasion for attackers to infiltrate your network and have a huge advantage. Cisco was one of only two vendors, out of the ten evaluated, to prevent adversaries from using evasion techniques to disguise attacks at point of delivery.

Some vendors did poorly at blocking evasions—to the point that NSS Labs would not recommend their NGFWs. They could only block the evasions upon retesting – having fixed weaknesses from the first test.

Which vendors are best prepared? One that got it right the first time?  Or one that required retesting to fix their weaknesses? Which would you like working for you?   As we all know, in the real-world, there are no second chances when blocking threats.  One evasion can pose serious risk to your business.

It’s imperative to validate security buying decisions using real-world tests that demonstrate how a solution performs when it’s protecting your environment. Buying decisions based solely on quadrant or wave positions are just data points –  incomplete unless paired with actual product testing.

2. Consistency of Performance

The second consideration is consistency of performance. While it’s great to score well in any given test, strong performance year after year is what counts most, as shown in the graphic below of Cisco’s performance the past seven years.  Note the dotted lines are test averages of all participating vendors.

Cisco delivers investment protection with consistently strong results in independent testing. Note: the majority of the products in the 2017 NGFW test failed to detect one or more evasions. The impact of missed evasions weighed heavily on the overall scoring for security effectiveness explaining the considerable drop in the test average.

When you select an NGFW that not only performs well on Day 1, but on Day 100 and Day 1000, it means you can confidently:

  • Keep pace with evolving threats. As security needs and threats evolve over time, you can count on Cisco Firepower NGFW to provide consistent protection and performance.
  • Make informed buying decisions judged by historical performance, where you compare vendor track records over time.

3. Time to Detection

When threats slip through frontline defenses, time to detection of malware is a critical security metric. It is the window between the first observation of a file and detection of that file as a threat. We all know that adversaries can wreak more havoc the longer they remain undetected, so we must reduce their dwell time. The current, and candidly unacceptable, industry average for the time it takes to detect a breach is over 100 days.

In recent Breach Detection Systems testing, also performed by NSS Labs, Cisco products, including Firepower NGIPS and Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), detected 100 percent of the tested breaches within 24 hours.  Plus, Cisco performed significantly better than its competitors – detecting the vast majority of breaches within minutes. This matters since it reduces adversaries’ dwell time – and the risk to your organization. We have been tracking our Time to Detection progress since late 2014. In less than two years, Cisco has dropped the median TTD from 50 to 15 hours to now about nine hours. We continue to make progress integrating Cisco’s security architecture – including AMP across our network, endpoint and cloud security products.  We will update you again on our efforts to reduce Time to Detection through the Cisco 2017 Midyear Cybersecurity Report, to be published later this summer.

To sum up, today’s digital enterprises depend on effective security and Cisco delivers – AGAIN. The independent NSS Labs NGFW evaluation should give you great confidence that you have the best solution of its kind – whether you’re already a Cisco Firepower NGFW customer, or considering your next firewall. And beyond the firewall, only Cisco’s security architecture enables you to change the security equation in your favor, making your security posture more effective now and in the future.

As an Executive Administrator, I get to see life at Cisco in a special way. On most days, it’s like I am looking into a bubble as I get to observe how everyone interacts with each other, what makes each person special, and I get to see each person’s many talents. One of my favorite things about my job is getting to plan events for our teams that incorporate everyone while helping us to grow!

Cisco’s collective culture is rooted in the belief that you work hard, you play hard – and here at Cisco Austin that is no different. So when one of my leaders recently asked if I could “find something different” for our teams to do while on an outing – I jumped at the challenge!

My leaders trust me, and are always up for trying something new – so I took an even greater risk and signed us all up for Curling. Yes, I said CURLING!

Most weren’t even quite sure what it was – let alone how this could help us to strengthen our team skills. My motivation for this particular choice was to get our teams out of their comfort zones! In doing so, I also wanted to get them to have fun while working as a cohesive team.

We all work well together on a daily basis, but it is the strong interpersonal relationships that really drives a team.

Curling is a sport in which you need a granite rock, a sheet of ice, and a target 42 yards away to participate. If your team of four finishes with your rocks closer to the target than your opponents’ — your team wins the game! Curling is a game of strategy, of finesse, and yes of fitness! Did you know that at the highest levels of the sport, sweepers expend the same energy as a sprinter in a 200 meter dash? That’s crazy right?!

Many thought this choice was crazy too, but I’m here to tell you that I think curling is for everyone! It’s low impact, yet, a good cardiovascular workout. They even had a number of modifications for a co-worker who has a walking impairment to use so he could join in the fun. I loved that our day was inclusive, and by the end, everyone saw the beauty of what curling had taught us.

At first, as with any new exper ience, there was chaos! Everyone was trying to take control of the game, the ice, their equipment – but, then something awesome happened. Our team started to communicate – we began to support one another, and synergy happened! I could definitely see the change in them by the end of the lesson as we all started to learn how to get that large stone down the center of the ice using newfound techniques, brooms, and teamwork.  It was amazing!

“So I thought curling really couldn’t be justified as being a “sport” and the engineer in me was quite skeptical that the “sweeping” could have any significant impact on the velocity of the stone.  Executive summary: I *was wrong* about both of these.

After participating in this outing I gained a newfound respect for the sport all while enjoying the company of my coworkers.  This is definitely one of my more enjoyable work outings and certainly not something I expected to do in hot sunny Austin and not something I would have ever tried on my own.”

– Bill Thomson, Technical Lead – Engineering

Wondering what Curling and the Cisco Life have in common? Here’s what I think:

  • You need your team to work in unison to collaborate effectively. Watch curling just once…you will see the teamwork!
  • When things get in your way, push them aside! Push away the negative, the toxic, the obnoxious; all of the things that prevent you from reaching your target goal. Whether it be here at Cisco, or in your daily life — sometimes, you need to do this!
  • Cisco is all about diversity, accepting each other, and teamwork! We learned that the source of the Curling stone comes from one of two places — the island of Ailsa Craig off the coast of Scotland or the Trefor Granite Quarry in Wales. It is to remind us that while we may be different, we all came into this world with the same need to be loved and valued. Fortunately, this stone is surrounded by an efficient support system, and it is the team’s job to be sure each stone reaches its destination — just like our teams at Cisco!
  • Whether on the curling rink or in the corporate world, the key is to have a functional team. It’s important to have a team where decisions are made responsibly, with the best interest of the organization and its people in mind. Cisco is an industry leader in thinking this way and setting our teams up for success.

Do you have a team that’s been together forever and needs a little rejuvenation? Or maybe a new team that wants to be more cohesive? Then grab your team & get curling!

Want to join a company that’s all about our teams? We’re hiring!
