I’m here at the 2013 SITA Air Transport IT Summit in Brussels with hundreds of the industry’s decision makers gathered to hear CEO’s and CIO’s address the community. In partnership with SITA, Cisco displayed the next generation of passenger monitoring and flow management solutions using Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) Solution and SITA’s industry specific customizations at the summit.
The main themes emerging in the sessions from the experts sharing their insights for the future of the industry are the ‘mobile explosion’, the demands of next generation passengers and, of course, the challenges of business intelligence & Big Data.
After talking with many people about their visions and concerns for the future of the industry, it’s clear to me how CMX can help airport organizations stay aligned with these trends and overcome the industry challenges in order to be more efficient, profitable and competitive.

Over the past five years, the adoption of small cells has increased dramatically. At Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year the Small Cell Forum announced that we have now crossed the threshold where there are more small cells deployed than macro cells in the world. Clearly, small cells are playing, and will continue to play a critical role in the global mobile infrastructure.
Over the last 18 months Cisco has doubled-down on its investments in small cells, from dramatic growth and scaling of our Service Provider Wi-Fi solution to our recently announced intent to acquire licensed small cell leader Ubiquisys. With this opportunity, Cisco has a responsibility to address the challenges we face in small cell deployments. How do we help mobile and cable operators around the world address the issue of cost effective coverage and capacity using small cells? How do we work with the small cell ecosystem, including mobile partners and thought leaders in this industry, to create successful, and profitable, deployments of small cells by operators around the world? How do we work with enterprise organizations to deploy small cells? Read More »

EDITOR’S NOTE: This post is a continuation of Brendan’s from Tuesday on my observations from the Geneva Airport Passenger Terminal Expo.
One of the things that strikes me here at the Air Passenger Expo is the proliferation of companies offering some type of passenger flow monitoring solutions. These vary from small startups to large players, and the offerings are a mixture of many technologies: video, cameras, bluetooth, and various types of sensors. The problem most are solving is point-based monitoring, such as how many passengers in the line, how many people are entering, or what is the current wait time in security – all very valuable point information for the Airports to make sure they’re staffed properly and passengers have the best experience.

I’m standing here today in Geneva, at the annual Airport Passenger Terminal Expo, where Cisco and SITA are presenting our joint solution for WiFi-based location-based services in airports. This solution enables deep insights and understanding of how passengers use and move throughout their arrival or departure journey.
The event kicked off this morning with a series of keynotes, and already on the exhibition floor I’ve been talking to a lot of airport leaders who are interested in the joint Cisco/SITA solution and how this really is starting to enable a better travelling experience and more efficient airport.
