Upcoming Cloud Computing Survey Results Webinar

Heads up, I’ll be moderating a webinar session this Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 8:00 a.m. PST where we will go over findings that Cisco’s IBSG consulting group completed recently on cloud computing. The results of the survey are useful for both Service Provider and Enterprise organizations. In the webinar, we’ll have distinguished speakers from Savvis (Brian Klingbeil, General Manager, Hosting), Valogix (Mark Yablonski, CTO), and Cisco (Scott Puopolo, VP, Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group). Based on feedback from IT decision makers, we will have an honest discussion on growing trends, concerns and implications of cloud computing, and the next steps towards success.

The main points on our agenda include:

  • Why cloud computing is a compelling economic proposition for enterprises
  • How quickly enterprises plan to migrate to the cloud
  • Which applications will be first in line for cloud migration – and why
  • Who will be the most trusted providers of cloud services
  • What opportunities cloud computing opens for service providers

Making TelePresence Even Better: Announcing the First Commercially Available Interexchange Cisco TelePresence Service

Metcalfe’s law, an iconic principle in networking, states that the value of a network is proportional by the square number of endpoints it has. In essence, the more people on the network, the more valuable it is. In part, that’s what made the PSTN so valuable…everybody used to have a fixed phone…and it’s what makes the mobile network so valuable now since every one over 14 definitely has one with many households sporting multiple ones…and it’s the driving force behind the momentum of Cisco TelePresence.

Today AT&T and BT announced the first commercially available interexchange Cisco TelePresence service . With Inter-Provider Cisco TelePresence, it’s possible to connect disparate enterprise networks over different SP networks for real-time Cisco TelePresence meetings in a highly secure, consistent, and transparent manner.

Light Reading: IP Video Migration

In this ‘IP Video Migration’ video series, produced in conjunction with Light Reading, three Cisco executives discuss what it will take – strategically, operationally, and culturally – for service providers to make the transition to IP Video.

In the introductory overview, analyst Jeff Baumgartner and analyst Alan Breznick set the stage for the discussion: Why cable operators are pursuing an IP video strategy in the first place, why 71% of MSOs surveyed by are either in trial or planning to be in trial with IP video, and how operators are better positioned to offer services over IP than existing and would-be competitors.

A Thanksgiving Blog

It’s the week of Thanksgiving, and as such it seemed a good time to pause, take a breath, look around, and say thanks. So, in no particular order:

Thank you to my engineering and technology co-workers, both here at Cisco and everywhere else, for being so adept in evolving and adapting in this great era of innovation.

Think about the pace of change in our lifetimes, attributable to very smart people, focused on innovating: We’ve gone to the moon, explored Mars and even built a space station. We’ve decoded the human genome in this same period of time. We’ve helped to create not just the Internet, but also the capability to “put the Internet in your pocket” – to make that endless stream of information available to people wherever there’s an IP connection.

Thanks, too, to our service provider customers, for challenging us to dig deep and do our best work to help create this next great era of consumer choice and innovation – to facilitate that shift to IP-based entertainment and communications experiences. They’ve challenged us to not just focus on innovation that benefit consumers but consider the viability of the business models in support of entire media ecosystems.   Real market shifts occur when new technology delivers compelling consumer value while sustaining a tangible economic model. I’m very grateful that we’re a part of making it happen with you.

Tata, the Cisco ASR 9000, and the Global Ethernet Evolution

Even if you’re a recent member of the SP360 blog audience, you likely know that our flagship edge router – the ASR 9000 – is on my list of favorite things (it makes a great gift idea for the Holidays, btw…), and we’re pleased to report that it is on the lists of many of our largest service provider customers, too.  The ASR 9000 has no question made a strong degree traction in the market place in the 18 months since it became generally available and in fact is clearly hitting its stride with a 40% QoQ increase in its customer base last quarter.  This traction is not just because of its unmatched capacity in the edge, or its unique capabilities in supporting the services and applications of the Next Generation of the Internet, but also because of its high degree of resiliency and quality – prompting many customers I speak to, to continue to rave about it.

In addition to all this traction, contributing to some nice market share gains for Cisco – an increase in 2.7% in edge share in CYQ3 alone per ACG Research – we’re just as pleased with what the ASR9000 can do to support our service provider customers.  To that end, we’re honored to announce the addition of Tata Communications to the list of prominent, reference customers.
