Mobile Trends & Airport Passenger Terminal Expo 2014

airport passenger expo 0The annual Passenger Terminal EXPO is underway this week in Barcelona. The event provides a powerful international platform for the airport and airline sectors to interact and share common issues, goals and solutions about the airport industry, with a particular and unique focus on the terminal.

Cisco’s partner SITA has a very strong presence at the event with various speakers on the industry trends as well as booth and demos. One of these is the iFlow platform which uses Cisco’s MSE as a core component.

The Airport industry is one of the most researched industries with very solid and proven metrics and clear ROI measures. Some interesting statistics recently reported include:

Airport IT Investment trends:

  • IT spending in Airports has grown by 12% CAGR since 2010,
  • with IT spend in Airports in 2013 representing 5.43% of their revenues (up from 4.9% in 2012)

Cisco Live Milan 2014 & CMX

Cisco Live Milan 2014 kicked off this morning with an opening keynote by Rob Lloyd. During the session Rob shared Cisco’s  vision of the Internet of Everything, and explored the industry trends and technologies that are making that vision a reality. One of these areas is enabled by Cisco’s CMX solutions and our growing ecosystem of partners.

To illustrate how this vision is becoming a reality, a CMX demo was shown on stage. The demo related to a wine producer ( we are in Italy by the way..) who was able to engage with their customers via their mobile app. Enabling the customer find the particular wines they are interested in, interact with the wine maker, get location specific promotions and really deliver a highly personalized and location specific service.

HDX Blog Series #4: Optimized Roaming

If you’ve been a long time user of Wi-Fi, at some point you have either observed someone encounter (or have personally suffered from) so called “sticky client syndrome”. In this circumstance, a client device tenaciously, doggedly, persistently, and stubbornly stays connected to an AP that it connected to earlier even though the client has physically moved closer to another AP.

Surprisingly, the reason for this is not entirely…errr…ummm…unreasonable. After all, if you are at home, you don’t want to be accidentally connecting to your neighbor’s AP just because the Wi-Fi device you’re using happens to be closer to your neighbor’s AP than to your own.

However, this behavior is completely unacceptable in an enterprise or public Wi-Fi environment where multiple APs are used in support of a wireless LAN and where portability, nomadicity, or mobility is the norm. In this case, the client should typically be regularly attempting to seek the best possible Wi-Fi connection.

Some may argue that regularly scanning for a better Wi-Fi connection unnecessarily consumes battery life for the client device and will interrupt ongoing connectivity. Therefore the “cure is worse than the disease”. But this is true only if the client is very aggressively scanning and actually creates the complete opposite of being “sticky”.

The fundamental issue with “stickiness” is that many client devices simply wait too long to initiate scanning and therefore seeking a better connection. These devices simply insist on maintaining an existing Wi-Fi connection even though that connection may be virtually unusable for anything but the most basic functionality. Read More »

Cisco CMX @ NRF 2014

NRF 2014 was held last week at the Javits Centre in New York City. It’s the biggest retail event of the year where vendors show off the future of the industry to all the delegates both using inspiring key notes and exciting demos on the Expo floors.

2014 and beyond:

It wasn’t too hard to identify that there were some common themes. On Tuesday afternoon I stood on the main Expo floor and just looking around I could quickly see the industry’s top of mind phrases and buzz words popping out:

“Omni channel”,”Onmianalytics”, “Predictive”, “Insights”, “Customer science and Analytics”, “Precise Location Matters”, “Analyze Decide”, “Mobilize”, “Mobility solutions”, “Big data”, “Customer engagement”, “Adaptive offers”, “Personalized customer experience”, “Customer Experience Analytics”

We certainly are entering the era where using data, analytics and personalization is no longer just an interesting notion or “nice to have” for retail -- it is now the KEY thing companies MUST do.

And a big common theme is that mobile is exploding and changing things rapidly, so retailers either need to keep up or inevitably fall behind their competitors. Read More »

Cisco’s New Wall Access Point Helps Hoteliers Deliver In-Room Wi-Fi Access

Hotels and guests have had a love-hate relationship with Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi has become an expected service, not just a luxury, leaving hotels struggling to find the right setup that is both cost-effective and meets visitor needs. In the last few years, there has been an explosion of mobile devices being used in the market, resulting in guests arriving with laptops, tablets and smartphones all ready to connect to speedy and reliable Wi-Fi. And when Wi-Fi isn’t operating smoothly, the complaints come through loud and clear.

Cisco’s new Aironet 702W Series Access Point is a wall AP, which solves several problems at once. In the past, bulky hardware switches and access points have been installed in the hallways, which isn’t ideal for in-room Wi-Fi access, nor is it visually appealing. The Wall AP combines hardware switches and access points into a single unit, about the size of a dollar bill, making it much more aesthetically pleasing and less obvious to guests.
