Continuing our commitment to make data center infrastructures more responsive to enterprise applications demands, today, we announced FlexPod Select with Hadoop, formerly known as NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop, broadening our FlexPod portfolio. Developed in collaboration between Cisco and NetApp, offers an enterprise-class infrastructure that accelerates time to value from your data. This solution is pre-validated for Hadoop deployments built using Cisco 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects (connectivity and management), C220 M3 Servers (compute), NetApp FAS2220 (namenode metadata storage) and NetApp E5400 series storage arrays (data storage). Following the highly successful FlexPod model of pre-sized rack level configurations, this solution will be made available through the well-established FlexPod sales engagement and channel.
The FlexPod Select with Hadoop architecture is an extension of our popular Cisco UCS Common Platform Architecture (CPA) for Big Data designed for applications requiring enterprise class external storage array features like RAID protection with data replication, hot-swappable spares, proactive drive health monitoring, faster recovery from disk failures and automated I/O path fail-over. The architecture consists of a master rack and optionally up to nine expansion racks in a single management domain, creating a complete, self-contained Hadoop cluster. The master rack provides all of the components required to run a 12 node Hadoop cluster supporting 540TB storage capacity. Each additional expansion rack provides an additional 16 Hadoop cluster nodes and 720TB storage capacity. Unique to this architecture is seamless management integration and data integration capabilities with existing FlexPod deployments that can help to significantly lower the infrastructure and management costs.
FlexPod Select has been pretested and jointly validated with leading Hadoop vendors, including Cloudera and Hortonworks.

“If you don’t get off that computer game, you’ll never amount to anything!”
It’s a familiar lament in modern families. Yet as parents fret about the time their children spend gaming, they may be missing the bigger picture — by failing to perceive the future of job creation in the Internet of Everything (IoE) economy.
Gaming (within reason!) bestows children with some valuable skills that will be relevant to a rapidly evolving job market. And for a few kids, the gaming becomes the job. Gaming “super bowls” draw top players and increasingly large audiences that prefer the interactive nature of gaming to the performer / spectator model of “real” sports.
The point is not for parents to bank on their children becoming wealthy at the “gaming super bowl.” Those odds are probably not much better than making it to the NFL’s Super Bowl!

“You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” So said Dave Evans, Cisco’s chief futurist, in his keynote address at Cisco Live 2013. I couldn’t agree more! As we usher in a new era of hyperconnectivity, we will see our environment in unprecedented ways, and then manage it like never before.
The trick is getting the relevant data to the right people at the correct time.
Cisco calls this transformation the Internet of Everything (IoE). With its explosion in connectivity from 10 billion things today to 50 billion in 2020, IoE promises a profound transformation that will enhance nearly all aspects of our lives.
But only if we do it right. And that requires changing the ways in which we think.
For IoE to be a true game changer, it will take much more than infusing every road, refrigerator, tire, and supermarket shelf with data-generating sensors. IoE could, for example, have a deep impact on water management. Today, 30 percent of fresh water is lost to leaking pipes. But a sensor in a pipe can only tell you that it’s losing water (and you may already have known that). The key is managing the information, tying it into control systems, and creating far-reaching, highly efficient processes for rerouting water or mobilizing maintenance resources. Read More »

At this year’s Hadoop Summit 2013
, I presented on the “The Data Center and Hadoop” which built upon the past two years of testing the effects of Hadoop on the data center infrastructure
. What makes Hadoop an important framework to study in the data center is that it contains a distributed system that combines both a distributed file system (HDFS) along with an execution framework (Map/Reduce). Further it builds upon itself and can provide other real-time or key/value stores(HBASE) along with many other possibilities. Each comes with its own set of infrastructure requirements that include throughput sensitive components along with latency sensitive components. Further in the Data Center, understanding how all these components work together is key to optimized deployments.
After studying many of these components and their effects, the very data we were alanyzing became a topic of a lot of our discussions. We combined application performance data, application logs, compute data AND network data to build a complete picture of what is happening in the data center.
With the advent of programmable networks (aka “Software Defined Networking”) it is not only important to make the network more application aware, but to also know where and how to analyze and make the right connections between the application and the network.

This week I had the privilege of speaking at Cisco Live 2013 about the coming explosion in connectivity among people, processes, data, and things, which Cisco calls the Internet of Everything (IoE).
This massive technological and societal shift promises to transform and accelerate our lives in profound ways as the number of connected objects soars from 10 billion today to 50 billion (and rising) by 2020.
Yet even before I left for Orlando or gave my first Cisco Live presentation, I saw ample evidence that IoE is not just a vision of the future. Increasingly, it is the Internet of today—and evolving rapidly all around us.
IoE represents the orchestration of a bevy of emerging technologies, including Big Data analytics, video, mobility, cloud, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. And it will ultimately infuse almost everything—roads, jet-engine parts, shoes, refrigerators, soil, supermarket shelves, you name it—with cheap, tiny sensors that will generate terabytes of data to be sifted for key insights.
