This is the first in a new series of Service Provider focused topics.  We had a lot of choices on where to start but this jumped out as my favorite.  Tail-f brought us some incredibly successful work that dovetails nicely into our SP strategy.   

Tedious CLI and home-spun scripts continue to characterize a boom of network growth that is now struggling under its own weight.  SP networks, and many enterprises in fact, just can’t keep up with the demand for services.  This now affects their ability to compete and thrive.   

It has been impossible to implement network management and/or automation from the outside in.  Even if our networks were all from one single vendor, the number of updates, traffic characteristics and unique configurations would still make it an uphill battle.  SP networks are multivendor and full of legacy equipment that continues to have value.  Cisco’s NSO is now offering a way to work this problem from the inside out.  Standards and protocols that have been grown and tested over the last decade are now ready to turn this into one of those great ‘why didn’t we do this before’ situations.

“Standing Room Only” in the Service Provider Booth at Cisco Live Milan 2015

If you had a chance to join us at Cisco Live Milan last month, thank you very much for making this another exciting event for all of us. If you missed out being there in person, let me give you a brief summary of the highlights. Milan is the main industrial, commercial, and financial center of Italy and a leading global city where the EXPO 2015  will take place. What could be better than such a city to host the Cisco Live 2015 event!   It proved to be fertile grounds for driving innovations with our service provider customers and partners.   Our exhibition was structured to tell the story of the fddOpen Network Strategy by presenting over 15 technology and business demos.    We also brought the newest routers and switches with us to showcase the latest innovations that service providers can start deploying today.   Last but not least we have teamed up with the DevNet area where attendees could get their hands on developing applications and learning on virtualization, orchestration, and automation.  Our service provider booth of the Cisco Campus in the World of Solutions was very busy: “standing room only” and so many insightful conversations were conversations around the NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) and the SDN (Software Defined Networks), as pillars for delivering cloud services and an automated networking handling respectively, have matured significantly and are ready for prime time. Broad Industry Support Taking Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to Next Level

Cisco will Leverage OPNFV Efforts in Evolved Services Platform (ESP) Development

Most people following industry trends are aware of the ETSI Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Industry Specification Group, which was formed in 2012 and kicked off its first set of specifications in October 2013. These documents are commonly used references in the growing movement to utilize NFV for carrier-grade network services.

Great progress has already been made, and Cisco has delivered many innovative NFV solutions via our Evolved Services Platform. To take it to the next level, and realize the full potential of NFV, customers will now start flexibly combining components from different vendors to enjoy the benefits of open source efforts.

Hence the announcement on Tuesday of Open Platform for Network Functions Virtualization (OPNFV), a new open source project focused on accelerating NFV’s evolution through an integrated, open platform.  Cisco is a platinum-level founding member of the project, which will focus initially on the NFV infrastructure (NFVI) and infrastructure management (VIM) of the ETSI NFV Reference Architecture.

Cox Communication Automates Virtualized Services with Cisco Evolved Services Platform

There is a video available on YouTube describing a collaborative project with Cox Communications on virtualized residential services.  Dave Ward, Senior VP and CTO at Cisco Systems, is joined by Jeff Finklestein, Executive Director of Architecture at Cox Communications, and Alon Bernstein, Distinguished Engineer at Cisco. They discuss, in the context of Cisco’s Evolved Services Platform (ESP), how to rapidly implement a new service idea that Jeff and Dave cooked up: self-service virtual residential services.

In the proposed solution, a Cox customer logs in to a screen such as the following, and sees a virtual representation of services they can enable themselves from their home. 1

The dynamic state of the business of service providers is quite apparent these days, and perhaps this is most evident for the mobility providers as everyone and everything goes mobile.  All of their consumers, be they individual or business, are clamoring for new capabilities that can automate their business and simplify their lives.  In addition there is a new class (or breed) of consumer – “Things”.  Whether it is the connected car, city, bus, or kitchen appliances, “Things” are increasingly using the mobile network.  Many of these new services and applications are readily available from “Over the Top” (OTT) providers that do not necessarily have any network upon which to deliver them. The OTT business model is designed for service creation agility, leaving it up to the operators to provide network access, quality of experience, and service assurance while managing the exploding demands for bandwidth and spectrum.
