Happy Disruptive New Year! As 2016 promises to unleash digital innovations across industries, let’s pause for a moment and ask ourselves: What are some of the common triggers of this disruptive transformation to digitize business and society?

Three that immediately spring to my mind are: the Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics and Drones. On the surface, they all appear to be different dimensions of the upcoming technology revolution, but the moment we dig deeper, we discover a fascinating connection. They are all triggers or change agents for digital transformation through their connection with the Internet.

RoboticsBirenBlogPic1That was precisely the core idea behind last month’s RoboUniverse conference in San Diego: Robots, Drones, and The Internet of Everything. It was an honor to speak and share deeper thoughts on this subject during one of the sessions along with Daniel Obodovski, renowned author of an IoT book: The Silent Intelligence.

If we analyze historical facts, only about 12% (61 out of 500) of Fortune 500 companies in 1995 were still around in 2014. Today, 40% of the companies on the Fortune 500 list will either not exist or become irrelevant in the next decade. Professor Richard Foster from Yale University estimates that by 2020, more than three-quarters of the S&P 500 will be companies that we have not heard of yet. Another proof of today’s accelerated pace of change is the fact that “the average lifespan of a company in the S&P 500 index has decreased by more than 50 years in the last century, from 67 years in the 1920s to just 20 years today,” according to Professor Foster’s BBC Business Interview in 2012. As world populations migrate to urban areas, cities are often faced with new challenges, such as overcrowding, traffic congestion, pollution, resource constraints, and inadequate infrastructure, amid the desire for continuing economic growth.

To help address these challenges and identify new growth opportunities, Cisco and AT&T are forging a new alliance to build a framework to help cities better serve their citizens.

AR60504 2We will be using IoT innovations and bringing the smart cities framework to several spotlight cities across the United States. Communities and local universities will work together to build smart city environments. The spotlight cities and universities include Atlanta, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Chicago, and Dallas.   We will also utilize elements of the Cisco Smart+Connected Communities portfolio to help city leaders better apply intelligent networking capabilities.

AT&T and its alliance members already help communities solve problems with solutions that connect utility meters, street lights and water systems. The new framework adds several new categories:

  • Infrastructure – Cities are able to remotely monitor the conditions of roads, bridges, buildings, parks and other venues. Maintenance crews can identify slick roadways during freezing weather or detect bridges that may need repairs.
  • Citizen Engagement – Mobile apps give people information to stay better prepared. For example, you can be notified in real time if a traffic light isn’t working on your route. You can also remotely view parking meters and reserve spaces ahead of time.
  • Transportation – Digital signage lets commuters know in near real time when the next bus or train will arrive. People can rent electric bikes at stations across the city to reduce traffic.
  • Public Safety – Cities can better manage traffic patterns of pedestrians at stadiums, parks, and busy intersections. Gun fire detection technology helps law enforcement know where a shooting occurred. It also helps them determine the number of people involved and rounds fired.

att_horiz_color_smlAT&T is also developing a new digital dashboard that gives cities a high-level look at their communities’ conditions. The Smart City Network Operation Center (SC-NOC) offers cities a dashboard view of how assets are performing in near-real time. City officials can keep tabs on power outages, water leaks, traffic issues, and more – all from one location.

Such bold thinking for such worthy goals make this initiative all the more impressive. We salute AT&T for taking on such challenges that can benefit society and we thank them for choosing Cisco to be among their leading team members to help make these goals a reality.

CiscoNetworkNY_400x265“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us,” reflected Hal Borland, a renowned American author and journalist. As we enter 2016 it is pragmatism that matters most to network professionals. How can you address risks from as yet unknown threats? Free up time from routine network maintenance and redirect it to strategic IT tasks? Assure that your infrastructure doesn’t suffer from the use of obsolete or aging equipment? Expedite problem resolution when network issues can’t be avoided?

Here you’ll find practical answers to these and other critical questions about streamlining your network installed base management. Not all the tips originate with me. Customers shared several, while others come from years of Cisco experience in optimizing the network experience.

As more enterprises move toward digital transformation there is no better time than now to make sure your network is fit for the future. January is the month when health club memberships spike as people commit themselves to a healthier lifestyle. Why not take the opportunity to use the list below to ensure your own network’s fitness (without even leaving your desk)? Resume resolutions

It’s that time again – the advent of a new year. With that also comes New Year’s Resolutions (will we keep them this year?) and the obligatory New Year-themed blog post.

Its time for people to think about how they want to improve their lives either personally or professionally. This time-honored tradition of making a declaration of intent and then attempting to follow though with it in practice can be a source of inspiration and direction…or usually in my case, disappointment.

While we all accept that we may likely forget our resolutions by February, I’m going to give you a few that are achievable, and that you’ll WANT to keep.

Let’s talk about resolving to improve your resume. That super important ‘billboard’ of your professional career.

First, let’s think about a primary method for how people are recruited these days – LinkedIn. A robust LinkedIn profile is crucial for most professionals and that is another entire discussion, but lets leave with the takeaway that by the time you speak with a recruiter or hiring manager, they will know the basics of your work history: companies, job titles, tenure, education, location and some of your basic responsibilities. These should not be the focus of the content in your resume, however.

I’m going to save some of the more straightforward resume tips like not including an objective statement, using bullet points, elimination of grammatical errors, keep it to around 2 pages and focus on a few more impactful recommendations. (But I still mentioned them, didn’t I?)

  1. Highlight specific professional accomplishments. Whether it be successful project delivery, sales goal attainment, team building, etc. Prospective employers (and recruiters) want to see what you have actually done rather than a list of your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.
  1. Reflect scale. It’s helpful to reflect the scale at which you have operated in each position. What I mean by that is showing how much budget you were responsible for, how many clients you managed, how large and how many deals you closed or how large of a technical environment did you operate in. This helps recruiters and hiring managers determine a point of reference for your skill set as it relates to scale.
  1. Highlight key career opportunities that reflect your previous employer’s recognition of your performance. Examples of this could include being tapped for a high-visibility project team, promotion into a new position with increased responsibility or winning company performance rewards. This is a great way to show your success without forcing the hiring manager to dig that out during an interview.
  1. Be succinct and direct in your language. Each bullet shouldn’t take up more than 2 lines and you want to choose words that show action and reflect outcomes. Your ability to effectively communicate in written medium is being evaluated, even if subconsciously, by the person reading your resume so make sure to be thoughtful about how you craft your messaging.
  1. Customization. It can be effective to tailor your resume to the role you are considering. If there is a certain skill you possess or experience you have that the job is placing a premium on, then highlight that by expanding a bit on your current resume. It is common for people to have multiple versions of their resume to reflect different aspects of their skill set or experience.

Hopefully you will see the value in investing some time to polish up that resume in the coming year .And even if you are not looking for a new work opportunity, it can be helpful to leverage these tips to take stock in your current role. Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions while I try for the third year in a row to stop adding money to the swear jar.

Long before before ‘virtual’ became synonymous with servers, Network VLANS gave us a layer 2 answer for much needed network segmentation.  It also opened things up for more flexible network designs.

Watch TWTV 186 “Scaling Multitenancy with VXLAN

As server virtualization exploded however, multiple network design issues began to converge and revealed new issues to overcome:

  • Hardware costs rose as Spanning Tree’s lack of multipathing required redundant boxes to lay dormant in the event of failure.
  • Larger networks exposed the limited number of segments that VLANs could scale, capping out at just 4,094 segments, (or less when using STP).
  • Multi-tenancy put further pressure on VLAN limitations.

The answer to these problems arrived in 2012 as RFC 7348:  VXLAN, Virtual Extensible LAN. A network overlay with the entire layer 2 frame encapsulated in UDP by only adding around 50 bytes of overhead.

So now, the 4,094 segment limitation of VLAN had expanded to an incredible 16 million segments with VXLAN.  The ability for VXLAN to span layer 3 boundaries was an additional benefit for cloud networks, yet another concept emerging from server virtualization advancements.

Millions of segments, tenant isolation, layer 3 multipathing.  No more network issues.  Right?  Ironically, these larger VXLAN enhanced networks, began discovering new limitations.

The explosive growth of video, mobility, Internet-of-Things, and cloud services has brought about enormous business opportunities. Service Providers are adopting open and programmable network architectures that increase business agility and lower costs. However, adversaries are increasingly exploiting the growing attack surface presented by these new services and expanded network connections.

British Telecom, the largest service provider in the UK, has recently announced a partnership with Cisco to deliver threat-centric security solutions based on our joint expertise and leadership. By partnering with Cisco, BT will strengthen network and advanced threat protection capabilities and automate its threat intelligence to detect, analyze and remediate attacks, while providing the same security capabilities in offerings to their customers, with BT Assure Cyber, BT’s Managed Security Portfolio.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Les Anderson, VP of BT Cyber, and ask him how BT manages security to protect their networks and their customers and to get his take on our new partnership.

Sam Rastogi – Cisco Security: What changes in the threat landscape are you observing?
Les Anderson: Over the last 13 months, BT has experienced a 1,000% increase in threats. We’ve seen our networks targeted in ways that we haven’t seen before. There is unprecedented speed in the innovation, resiliency and evasiveness of cyber attacks.

CS: How do you counter these threats?
LA: Partnership with Cisco for threat-centric security and consolidating where it makes sense for our business and our customers.

CS: What security technologies are top of mind for you?
LA: We need threat-centric technologies that are able to stop threats. We look to solutions, such as ASA with FirePOWER Services, Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), and Next-Generation IPS (NGIPS) – all, working together. They amount to a differentiated capability in the market – to see and stop more threats for us and our customers.

CS: How do you view security as a growth engine for organizations?
LA: BT doesn’t compromise when it comes to prioritizing our own cybersecurity; security can be a growth engine for business like BT to take full advantage of today’s opportunities to be more productive, make organizations more efficient and customers happier by keeping systems — both ours and our customers — secure.  By relying on threat-centric security, we’re thus able to focus on our core business goals, making security a differentiator. Investing in security in turn inspires further trust in doing business with us and with our customers.

CS: Why did you choose to partner with Cisco? And why now?
LA: Cisco has made smart security acquisitions and technology innovations that provide a significant differentiation in the market. I’m seeing that Cisco has the ability to deploy security products into SDN and virtualized environments to unlock additional value that is critical to security. Lastly our joint portfolio has allowed us to sell the largest cyber strategic security capability globally to a nation state. This is all possible with the strong partnership we have in place together.
