Over the past few years of being immersed in the Internet of Things (IoT), I have found that customers have very specific problems they are trying to solve; e.g. gaining energy efficiency, early fault detection or remote diagnosis and maintenance of equipment. Decisions are driven by the need to reduce Operational Expenditure (OPEX) and save on Capital Expenditure (CAPEX).
With all the data generated from IoT devices, having strong analytics and visualization capabilities can help in making accurate decisions and taking timely action thus achieving these critical business objectives. Of course, while this sounds appealing, it’s not quite that simple. In order to achieve meaningful value through reductions in OPEX and/or CAPEX, we need to effectively address data collection, analytics, visualization and control. Absent those essential elements, we are not able to harness the power of the IoT.

In my last blog I outlined the growing level of interest in private LTE networks; triggered when an enterprise has specific design, operational or performance requirements that can’t be met by public services.
On the surface this may look like a marginalisation risk for service providers, and within the context of legacy offers this would be right. However, while we see a growing interest from enterprises in some verticals in having their own LTE wireless infrastructure, Service Providers are far from precluded from a role in enabling these and in some markets are instrumental.

If you had a chance to join us at Cisco Live Milan last month, thank you very much for making this another exciting event for all of us. If you missed out being there in person, let me give you a brief summary of the highlights. Milan is the main industrial, commercial, and financial center of Italy and a leading global city where the EXPO 2015 will take place. What could be better than such a city to host the Cisco Live 2015 event! It proved to be fertile grounds for driving innovations with our service provider customers and partners. Our exhibition was structured to tell the story of the Open Network Strategy by presenting over 15 technology and business demos. We also brought the newest routers and switches with us to showcase the latest innovations that service providers can start deploying today. Last but not least we have teamed up with the DevNet area where attendees could get their hands on developing applications and learning on virtualization, orchestration, and automation. Network functions virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) will get a lot of interest this year at BBWF 2014 Broadband World Forum 2014 as carriers seek to make networks more agile and efficient. In talking to both service providers and large enterprises, it’s clear that we are already in another major transition in the networking industry.
I’ve spoken with many talented individuals about what NFV and SDN means to their networks. Some of these visions are very broad and long ranging and some are more narrowly focused on delivering or optimizing a single service very quickly. It’s clear that NFV has already been deployed in many different service applications while SDN has been noticeably slower to develop a focused following. Even in the case of Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs), there is an interesting combination of features focused on services delivery and features focused on infrastructure innovation. In this case “services” are typically the services that carriers sell to their end customers such as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and “infrastructure” is the virtualization of the typical network functions such as a virtualized route reflector on an x86 based server instead of running the route reflector application in an existing (physical) router.
