Initially hailed as a global savior, and more recently labeled a disappointment, the reality of 5G lies somewhere in between. The truth is, these oversimplified perspectives tend to overshadow the true value and effort required, while keeping the focus on the wrong problems.
This year Cisco participated in the O-RAN Plugfest 2021 that took place in various sites around the world. Along with partners, we have come up with solutions that can help brownfield service providers to start taking advantage of 5G with legacy 4G network infrastructure, and save on deployment costs.
Today, World Wide Technology (WWT) announced a collaboration with Cisco, along with Altiostar, to develop an Open vRAN blueprint and validation lab and program for service provider networks. The Open vRAN movement started with some smaller waves and the anticipation of a larger wave to form. It was driven by a belief that the fundamental way that mobile networks have been built for decades needed to evolve and improve.
We’ve had a busy six months architecting and building solutions, executing operator demos and trials, helping to define open interfaces and management, building business models to compare costs of various solutions, partnering with the UK government to help address the digital divide with 5G, and much more. There’s more to come on many of those items. In this update we’ll focus primarily on our activities around this week’s MWC Americas show in Los Angeles.
