Gartner 2016 Predictions: Cloud Security Challenges Rise From Within

Today, most employees access public cloud solutions by bypassing IT. This is concerning for CIOs/CEOs given that it puts their organizations at substantial risk for data security and compliance challenges.

But, what if it isn’t actually the public cloud that you need to worry about? What if it’s your own internal processes that are the biggest risk when using cloud?

Recently, Gartner released their top predictions for IT organizations and users for 2016. According to their report, Gartner predicts, “Through 2020, 95 percent of cloud security failures will be the customer’s fault.”

Let’s think about this for a moment. For years, companies have claimed they avoided public cloud solutions due to security concerns. This included multi-tenancy/shared resources (noisy neighbors), authentication/access control, availability needs, and meeting compliance requirements. Yet, it’s not necessarily public cloud providers who need to be companies’ top concern— rather, it’s their own internal procedures that lead to compliance failures and increased levels of business risk

Organizations need to look at external factors as well as their internal processes to reduce risks from and gain the benefits of using public cloud.

As Gartner states in their prediction, “The characteristics of the parts of the cloud stack under customer control can make cloud computing a highly efficient way for naive users to leverage poor practices, which can easily result in widespread security or compliance failures”.

Therefore, it is increasingly important for businesses to develop a holistic cloud management approach to properly address risk.

Cisco Cloud Consumption as a Service helps organizations begin their journey to managing cloud by identifying cloud usage throughout the business for complete visibility. With this visibility you can begin to evolve your cloud management capabilities, including:

  • Meet compliance and properly mitigate risks by defining cloud usage policies while working with your DLP (data loss prevention) solutions
  • Reduce cloud spend by identifying redundant services
  • Identify and meet the cloud needs of internal groups
  • Benchmark cloud use against peers
  • Compare providers to find the right cloud services to meet your needs

Cisco Products Receive Highest Scores in 3 of 4 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Unified Communications

The evaluation is complete. And we think Cisco Unified Communications scored well. Very well, in fact. Just released, the 2015 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Unified Communications is a product-centric overview of UC vendors.

The report digs deeper into the vendors represented in the 2015 Magic Quadrant for UC. In Gartner’s words, it’s “intended to help organizations define their requirements and select specific products that match their needs as aligned with one of the use cases.”

In the report, Gartner evaluates the effectiveness of vendors in addressing user needs in four primary use cases. Cisco received the highest product score in three out of the four:

  • Full UCC with Strong Telephony Requirement
  • Full UCC with Strong CollaborationRequirement
  • Ability to Offer Hybrid Solutions

Not to worry, Cisco UC scored third highest in “Ability to Work with Complementary Vendors.”

Cisco Named as a Leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications 2015

Cisco Unified Communications Delivers a Full Experience

As I read the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications by Bern Elliot and Steve Blood, August 10, 2015, one word stood out: full.

full:  adjective – not lacking or omitting anything; complete

It’s a word that Gartner mentions when describing leaders.

“Leaders have a full UC offering and strong market presence, and demonstrate success in the field. They have a strong presence in related markets to expand their footprint in UC. These vendors and their channel partners have experience delivering UC to a broad range of enterprise types and into most geographic regions.”

We believe our position as a leader for unified communications in this year’s report reflects that fullness. This is especially evident in our position as furthest to the right for “Completeness of Vision.”

Ringing in 2015, the WebEx Way

Happy New Year! As I return from the holidays and begin the year ahead, I’m energized and excited about all the amazing accomplishments we achieved with WebEx in 2014. Many recollections come to mind that I’d like to share with you. And I have exciting news for 2015 — already! More on this in just a minute…

WebEx is really at the core of everyone’s work life. With over 60 million users and more than 1 million meetings a day, we really impact how people work and live. It was just a little over a year ago that I started leading the Cloud Collaboration Applications team at Cisco. When I started, I challenged the WebEx product team with a new goal to dramatically improve our already great web conferencing tool. A key element of this goal was a focus on simplicity. Making WebEx simple in addition to enhancing functionality was the target. Bottom line: It is our mission to delight every WebEx user and make their work life more productive.

The New WebEx

My team took this challenge to heart and made significant product changes in this direction. In October 2014, we launched the New WebEx that comes with a new clean intuitive interface, improved web landing pages that make it easier to join online meetings, much faster meeting load times, better video layout, and wideband VoIP audio for better audio quality.
