Building the Cable Access Network for the Next Decade

When I talk with service provider customers these days about their goals, it’s a very different conversation than in the past. It’s no longer just technology and procurement people in the room; more and more, the people launching the actual services are steering the discussion. Getting Broadband Where It Needs to Be: Introducing the CBR-8

Here’s an industrially trending topic: Broadband speeds. We had the January 2013 FCC mandate for at least one Gigabit community in all 50 states by this year. We have Google’s continued Gigabit push, expected to roll into 18 more cities this year. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) is leading broadband expansion into 93% of U.S. cable homes, while driving initiatives to triple broadband speeds, and further the industry’s leadership and innovation in broadband.

This isn’t the easiest mandate, for service providers. Recall that broadband consumption continues to grow at 50% year-over-year.. And coming up fast are the things of the Internet of Everything, which put another multiplier on broadband consumption.

In short, and whether or not you believe Gigabit services are more “billboard speeds” right now, the Internet needs to go faster..and faster. That’s why you’ll be hearing so much from us this week at INTX about our new cBR-8 — the industry’s first platform with the speed and capacity to deliver (not just test!) 10Gbps DOCSIS 3.1 and capable of supporting scaled deployments of bouquets of DOCSIS 3.0, DOCSIS 3.1, and converged data/video services.

CCAP+Remote PHY and the Path Towards FTTH, Unified Access and Virtualization

This week, we and 10,000 or so hard-core engineering colleagues within the cable industry descend upon the city once known as the cable capital of the world — Denver, Colorado — and, like it’s been since the earliest days of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ annual Cable-Tec Expo, a trending topic, now and forever, is bandwidth.

The reasons why are obvious, but indulge me a brief recap: Consumer usage of broadband grows at an compound annual rate of 50% or more, ever since about 2009, when Netflix began streaming video, in addition to mailing DVDs. Add to that the sheer number of video-capable, IP-connected screens we all use, and the fact that video itself is only scheduled to get bigger (we’re looking at you 4K), and it’s easy to envision why it’s a considerable challenge to keep the cable infrastructure updated, and capable of ever-increasing carrying capacities.

Here in Denver, we are focused on this challenge. Big picture, we are “transforming” cable access from a DOCSIS focus, to integrate DOCSIS with service provider  WiFi, PON & FTTx, and MetroE into a single, easily- managed portfolio, which only Cisco can deliver. ANGA COM 2014 Closes on a Positive Note: Key Highlights from the Show Floor

Another successful ANGA COM for Cisco.

The event itself attracted 17,000 visitors and 1,700 participated in the Congress, listening to over 100 speakers – both areas attracting more people than last year – this is indeed a growing show!

Cisco was well represented in panels and speaking sessions throughout the event, with Alon Bernstein´s talk on virtual CMTS’, Yves Padrines’ panel on Connected & Smart Homes  – which was very well attended in spite of taking place on the last afternoon – we counted over 300 people!  And of course my own involvement on a panel to discuss how Cloud is key to keeping service provider’s competitive against new players such as the Over-The-Top (OTT) providers.

The Beauty of Remote PHY (And Other Infrastructure Trends at ANGA 2014)

One of the taller trends protruding from the cable infrastructure side of life these days, along with Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), is the fiber optimization and convergence strategy known as “Remote PHY.

And if you’re into infrastructure trends, know that we expect the matter of Remote PHY to qualify as a genuine hot ticket at the upcoming ANGA show, in Cologne.

Why: Because as service providers with cable access assets roadmap the infrastructure portions of their strategies to provide Gigabit services (residential and enterprise), mobile backhaul, and headend virtualization, they’re finding it increasingly important to be able to use the same fiber(s) for multiple purposes.
