Cisco Interns
Cisco Interns compete to build a remote-control fish.

The graduate job market is incredibly competitive these days and a qualification just isn’t enough to secure a position. If you think about it, every graduate applicant will have a degree and when you’re competing with hundreds or even thousands of graduates for a limited number of jobs, it is important that you stand out from the crowd.

One of the best ways to make yourself more marketable and to increase your chances of securing a full-time position upon graduation is to gain experience working in an organization while studying at university – an internship!

Here are 4 reasons to Intern while at University.

  1. Gain Industry Knowledge

For many students, university can be quite theoretical and an internship is a great way to be able to learn by being hands-on and apply what has been learnt in class to the real world. You’ll gain first-hand industry experience from professionals you’re working with and develop the skills required to work in the industry.

  1. Career Exploration

Internships can provide you with the opportunity to sample your chosen career field early in your studies. This will allow you to observe the workplace and decide if a particular career matches expectations. Even if the internship experience was not what you expected, at the very least you will know that a particular field isn’t for you and you can try something else.

  1. Develop Interpersonal Skills

Internships will not only help you to develop the skills needed to work in a particular industry but will also provide interpersonal skills that are generally required to work effectively with others including:

  • Communication (Verbal, Written and Presentation)
  • Listening Skills
  • Negotiation
  • Problem Solving
  • Decision Making
  1. Make Professional Contacts

Most internships will enable to you work closely and develop professional working relationships with many people within the organization. Building your professional network is important and can potentially lead to referrals and recommendations that might land you a full-time position in the organization.  At the very least you could receive a great reference. References and referees will be invaluable when you are looking for a full-time job.

Don’t just leave an internship until your final year of study; the more internships you complete, the fuller your résumé will become and the more attractive you will look to future employers!

Are you about to make a collaboration investment?

Planning to purchase a set of collaboration tools to facilitate communication between your employees?

Evaluating tools that make it easier for a distributed team to meet, to stay in synch, and be more productive?

That’s great news.

But what to buy?  A lot of companies sell collaboration solutions. But not all solutions are created equal.  Some meet very specific needs, but offer little flexibility.  For instance, video conferencing systems that can be used only by people in rooms with specific endpoints.

How to choose a solution that not only meets your immediate needs, but also the needs, scenarios, devices, and work styles of other teams and users?  Today and moving forward?  In other words, how do you avoid purchasing a solution that has limited value?

To help outline what to consider at this critical stage – before making a purchase – we created a simple infographic.

Check out the top considerations. Review your needs. Then you can make a more informed decision about a collaboration solution. Get the right foundation to support growth, accommodate user needs across functions, work with a diverse set of devices, and be easy for IT to manage.

For 30 years, our technology has changed the way the world works, lives, plays and learns.   And though we are a technology innovator, our edge does not come solely from technology. It comes from our people.

Today is a proud day for the Cisco family.

I am very pleased to announce that CloudNOW, the executive consortium for the leading women in cloud and converging technologies, today named Liz Centoni, Vice President, Strategy and Engineering Chief of Staff at Cisco, as one of the winners of its flagship “Top 10 Women in Cloud” Awards.

Jocelyn DeGance Graham, founder of CloudNOW, stated, “Liz Centoni is one of the key cloud thought leaders who is pioneering the industry and leveling the playing field for future generations. We acknowledge Liz’s dedication and passion for tech, and thank her for her continued contributions.”

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 11.37.14 AM

Liz is a courageous and bold leader who is both a technologist and strategic thinker. As Chief of Staff for Cisco’s Engineering EVP, she plays a key role in driving the strategy to invest $5.7B in R&D. As Vice President and General Manager of the Service Provider Access Group, she successfully created a vision and strategy beyond product features that delivers true innovation to increase customer value.

Liz creates business impact and solid revenue results while also being a diverse and inclusive leader who actively engages employees and business partners in a way that makes them feel valued and respected.

As a true role model for Cisco’s culture, Liz is an active, hands-on mentor who dedicates time to coaching and developing talent. She had the vision to start a “Women in Engineering Leadership” forum for her organization, which has now expanded to the entire Cisco engineering organization of 25,000. She is also the Cisco Global Co-Executive Sponsor for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), a national program that promotes female talent in science, technology and engineering.

Data Centers and Clouds are all about applications. The efficacy of a data center or cloud deployment is a function of how quickly applications can be stood up, scaled or de-commissioned as required. As new architectures continue to evolve, data center and cloud architects are constantly on the lookout for innovative ways to further simplify operations, lower costs, increase responsiveness and provide flexibility of consumption models.

In this context, I’d like to take the opportunity to profile Pulsant – a cloud service provider from the United Kingdom. They provide colocation services across 10 data centers with managing hosting and innovative hybrid services that are continually evolving.

A short while ago, I had the pleasure of having Martin Lipka who heads the Pulsant network architecture team participate in a talk with me sharing deployment insights with customers at the F5 conference in Edinburgh. He talked about the simplicity of Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), and the synergy with F5’s BigIP and BigIQ offerings down the line. For the benefit of the broader humanity that was not in the room with us, I requested him to sit down again and distill some of his views. Martin was kind enough to oblige and shared his insights on diverse topics including how he expects data center architectures to evolve, candidly confessing why he was wrong about automation trends and how he feels the job roles will morph in the coming years. Interestingly, some of his sentiments were also echoed by Stefaan Hinderyckx, Network and Security Director of Dimension Data Europe. Stefaan is not in this video, but he had joined our session as well and it was good to see everyone excited about the possibilities of network, security and data center transformation.

A fresh case study from Pulsant is also posted here.

Also, at the same conference, I was invited to sit down with F5 EVP Dave Feringa and SVP Calvin Rowland along with my colleague Patrick Schmidt who’s the Managing Director overseeing the EMEA region, where we discussed the partnership, momentum with Cisco ACI and scaling our joint marketing activities.

Once upon a time, the world’s greatest inventions always seemed to come from individual geniuses locked in a room day and night on their own.  We often think of Alexander Graham Bell inventing the telephone by himself, Thomas Edison inventing the light bulb solo or Johannes Gutenberg working mostly alone to develop a mold that led to the first printing press.

Alex G Blog Pic 1Solo inventors will always play pivotal roles in developing “the next big thing” even as we we’re half way through the second decade of the 21st century.  Think Mark Zuckerberg masterminding Facebook  on his own in his dorm room at Harvard.

More and more, however, we’re discovering that in today’s Internet of Everything world, where complex technologies increasingly connect and converge, innovation hinges on all types of hyper collaborations.  Today, innovation requires open interaction among businesses, universities, startups, incubators, developers and others.  Now, collaboration makes innovation happen! John Chambers has often commented publicly about how Cisco’s innovation engine is on “fire.” Within Cisco’s Collaboration and Endpoint Technology Group (CETG), we certainly feel that way.

I just got word that independent industry analyst firm Frost & Sullivan has awarded Cisco its 2015 Market Leadership Award for IP Endpoint Communications. The award encompasses our desktop IP phones and DX Series, and our Cisco Jabber soft-client offerings. Coming on the heels of Red Dot design awards we received for our room systems, it’s another validation of our progress.

Frost & Sullivan recognized us for our relentless pursuit of technology excellence, and for our ability to maintain leadership positions in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving market.

I thought it would be worthwhile to share some comments from Frost & Sullivan to add insight.

Highlights noted in the report include: Continue reading “Cisco Receives Frost & Sullivan’s Market Leadership Award for IP Endpoint Communications”

In my last post, I discussed Bimodal IT and how some enterprises are adopting it as a way to manage the tradeoffs between “keeping the lights on” and business agility.

That’s not to say it’s easy. Operating bi-modally still requires proper planning and governance. And there are several reasons why.

In my last blog, we talked about the current age of digital disruption and how unicorns are changing the tech landscape.

What Does This Mean For You Though?

As a result, IT and LoBs are under more competitive pressure than ever before. A new wave of disruption faces them – hence, businesses need to react fast, innovate and release. This is where Shadow or Rogue IT comes into place – LoBs want to fail fast, and fail often. You can’t do that if it takes 2-4 weeks for a VM, never mind with access control restraints. At Cisco, our Cloud Consumption Service helps find on average 5-10 times more cloud services than the CIO was aware of. Shadow IT or Rogue IT is just the business trying to react to the market: the path of least resistance wins.
