Widespread adoption of self-service visualization and analysis tools like Tableau, Qlik and Spotfire, along with the acceleration of big data adoption, are driving increased demand for data preparation.

This new data preparation trend is so pervasive that at Gartner’s BI and Analytics Summits, Gartner provides a dedicated data preparation session entitled “The Next Big Market Disruption: Self-Service Data Preparation.”

Meeting Business and IT Needs

Based on their success with self-service visualization / analysis, many enterprises are allowing business users to support themselves with self-service data preparation tools as well. Cisco’s recently announced Cisco Data Preparation is one example.

But not all self-service data preparation tools are created equal. Users demand self-service data preparation solutions that are easy for them to use and adopt so they can get results quickly and drive business impact. So ease-of-use and agility, along with widespread access to any and all data are key business requirements.

However, with big data analytics so key to organizational success, IT also has a seat at the data preparation decision table. Regardless of the tool selected, IT needs to ensure these critical data preparation activities occur in with appropriate data governance.

What Does Data Governance Really Mean?

the_end_is_near_sign“It’s the end of the server as we know it”. That’s the title of an article published today in Forbes describing the attributes of a new category of systems that Cisco introduced last year called composable infrastructure. In the article Gina Longoria, a senior analyst with of Moor Insights & Strategy, explains the attributes of composable infrastructure. This is a new, disruptive technology that is reshaping the server landscape. Gina provides further details in a report she recently published, “The Journey to Composable Infrastructure”. The report also includes analysis of Cisco’s composable infrastructure strategy and the first two composable products available  – the UCS M-Series and C3260.

IoTWFWe’re now less than a week away from the Internet of Things World Forum, located in Dubai. This premier industry event, on December 6-8, will showcase many of the exciting transformations made possible by the Internet of Things (IoT) gaining momentum across the globe. The agenda is packed with keynotes by industry leaders, breakout sessions, a hackathon, a startup showcase, and a smart-city tour of Dubai. But there are two events I’m particularly proud to highlight.

Research and Innovation Symposium

Designed for industry leaders, academic researchers, R&D directors, and technology professionals driving IoT, the symposium provides unique insight into the emerging technologies and research that will shape the future of IoT. This year, the symposium will explore “the two faces of IoT”—the endless possibilities for innovation, and the haunting technology questions and challenges that must be addressed and overcome as we move toward an ever more connected world. The symposium will run in two information-rich 75-minute sessions over the course of two days. It will highlight the insights of distinguished speakers from around the world representing perspectives from industry, government, and academia. If you want a glimpse into the future of IoT, don’t miss it.

We have a day for giving thanks. We have three for getting deals. Then, we have #GivingTuesday, a day to donate to the causes that give voice to our values and contribute to a more equitable community for everyone. Cisco is a tech company that understands the power of connections, which is why we’ve developed a program that enables our employees to bridge those gaps in their local communities.

Cisco employees around the world have already raised over $2M for our Be the Bridge Campaign — a giving program that empowers our employees to give to those with uncertain access to life’s necessities — in short, to “Be the Bridge” for those in need. As part of this initiative, we’ve set up partnerships with over 400 organizations that provide not only food, but shelter, water access, nutrition, and emergency care to those most vulnerable, globally and locally. Cisco matches cash donations dollar for dollar, and donations of volunteer time, too.

Be the Bridge isn’t the only time of year our employees give, and generously. Last year alone, Cisco employees gave a combined $12 million in donations and matched funds, including over 155,000 hours of volunteer time, to the nonprofits and causes of their choice. This year’s Be the Bridge campaign puts an emphasis on supporting local organizations, some of them smaller and in need of amplification, to increase and expand offerings to the people and communities in need of their services.

atelier-digital-transformationThe world is experiencing a digital revolution that is rapidly changing your business landscape.  This revolution is not only connecting people with digital technology; but it has made this technology ubiquitous in all of our lives.  The result is tech-savvy employees and customers with new expectations how to interact with your business.

Meeting these expectations requires a transformation into a consumer technology company by utilizing digital technology to streamline operational processes and improve customer experiences.  Industry data indicates those organizations begin this transformation process experience increased profitability, market value and revenue.

Cisco’s private cloud automation facilitates the transformation of your business from manual to automated standardized service delivery.  Converting manual processes into automated workflows increases data center productivity which fuels faster time-to-market by business and application teams of new products or services.

Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility strategy prioritizes the issues that are most important to our business and to our stakeholders, identified through a formal CSR materiality assessment. We use the Cisco CSR Report to communicate our approach, objectives, progress, and challenges around five high-level priorities. First, we’ll focus on Supply Chain:

At Cisco, supply chain plays a critical role in the overall performance of the company. In a world where more and more devices are connecting to the Internet each day, we transform the technological innovations our engineers create by using our global network of capabilities to manufacture and deliver the solutions that enable our customers to harness the power of networking.

John Kern, Cisco’s Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Operations, shared the importance of an ethical, sustainable supply chain in this year’s Corporate Social Responsibility report:

“Our supply chain continues to adapt, innovate, and transform our products and services to create outcomes that enable Cisco’s business and optimize the customer experience. The reach of our global supply chain is immense and we take seriously the responsibility of delivering superior technology products in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner.”

Through a myriad of connections, the Internet of Everything has caused a digital disruption, forcing entire industries to evolve their business models in order to remain competitive and deliver optimized services. Both retail and higher education are prime examples. But, it’s the Internet of Things, comprised of millions of Internet-connected devices (estimated to be 50 billion by 2020), that’s having the largest impact on the manufacturing industry.

In a previous blog, we outlined how digital disruption is already happening across manufacturing and its sister industries like oil and gas. And while many of the operational changes and benefits happening are encouraging for the industry’s future, it’s also worth noting that as many as 40 percent of industry leaders will not adapt quickly enough, risking their survival in the industry. With so much at stake – Cisco estimates the Internet of Things will generate $8 trillion in Value at Stake through 2022 – it was the perfect time to host a #CiscoChat around “IoT-ready” machinery and connected factories.

Joined by members of the @CiscoMFG team and Brian Papke, the president of Mazak Corporation, we engaged in discussions on harnessing the power of connected machines, the opportunities being created and much more. Take a look at a few highlights below.

We know that manufactures are embracing digitization, but first, we wanted to gauge opinions of why they were doing so.

As a leader within the machine tool manufacturing segment, the team at Mazak Corporation quickly shared their thoughts.

The opportunities to drive business outcomes and enable more rapid and efficient manufacturing strategy were touted as well.
