Cisco EPN Manager Helps Carriers Drive Packet Optimized Transport

TDM transport remains the backbone of service provider networks throughout the world, but technology has matured to the point that we’re finally able to see a path toward truly converged, packet optimized transport networks. This shift puts service providers on a plan to eventually retire their SONET/SDH infrastructure, saving significant space, power, and other operational costs. For end users, it promises bandwidth flexibility and an even easier ability to tap into cloud-based applications.

Of course, such a change won’t happen overnight but will take time to ensure existing customer services aren’t affected in terms of the performance, latency, and availability.

While there has been a lot of talk about the technologies to enable IP and optical convergence — such as timing-over-packet standards and cost-effective circuit emulation — that’s just part of the solution. Just as important are the operational aspects as we converge (or “packetize”) networks, but how are we going to manage them? Verizon Enables Collaboration Around the World

The announcement that Verizon is offering global unified communication cloud service is good news for companies all over the world.

Large organizations tend to be slower to adopt new technology, and the cloud is no exception. Such wariness has its logic: with their scale, a wrong decision implemented across a large organization can be crippling.   However, too much prudence can undermine a company’s competitive position and ability to innovate, risking market share.

A strategy to mitigate this risk includes adopting cloud with a hybrid approach. This methodology enables an organization to keep its mission-critical applications on-premise in its private cloud. At the same time, it thoughtfully expands operations to the public cloud. There’s less risk but all the benefits of embracing new technology.

Multinational companies face a unique set of challenges. For these companies, moving to cloud is so much more than moving applications and data to a service provider’s data center. They need services that can span multiple data centers–preferably from the same provider. Furthermore, these services need to be consistent – and compatible – across borders.

That’s why Verizon’s UCaaS is so exciting. As Anthony Recine, chief marketing officer at Verizon Enterprise Solutions said, the aim of this new service is to provide multinationals with a “globally consistent offering for delivering UC as a service.” Verizon’s deployment of Cisco Powered cloud services enables multinational companies to move to the cloud on a global scale with confidence.

Part of the value of Verizon’s offering is its hybrid capabilities. Companies can choose the services they need at the scale they need them. To be able to achieve this took significant investment from Verizon, not just in technology, but in how the company structures delivery and pricing.

The new global UCaaS service is built on the Cisco Powered Hosted Collaboration Solution. The offering will be integrated with Cisco Collaboration Meeting Room Cloud when available in July to include voice, video and web conferencing. And, Contact Center services with mobility are expected to be added later in 2015.

Cisco Named Supplier for New Verizon Next-Generation Metro Optical Network Build

At Cisco, we pride ourselves on being true business collaborators with our service provider customers.

And we relish any opportunity to work side-by-side with a leading global service provider on a technology program with the potential to advance the entire telecommunications industry.

These opportunities are rare indeed. And today at OFC, the largest global conference and exposition for optical communications and networking professionals, Cisco was fortunate enough to receive such an opportunity.

Verizon announced that it would be working with Cisco and one other supplier to design and build a next-generation 100G metro network in the United States that will deliver improved scalability, functionality and efficiency. To meet Verizon’s mission of offering its customers high-capacity video and wireless solutions, it has decided to modernize its metro optical network.  Cisco is honored to be part of this important network transformation.

Using 100G flexible CDC ROADMs and packet aggregation will enable Verizon to advance and scale its network while maintaining existing services and reducing service-activation times as well as network operation and maintenance costs.

“Deploying a new coherent, optimized and highly scalable metro network means Verizon stays ahead of the growth trajectory while providing an even more robust network infrastructure for future demand,” said Lee Hicks, vice president of Verizon network planning. “Cisco met not only our technology requirements but the aggressive timeline to deploy our next-generation 100G-and-above metro network.”

Verizon will test and deploy the Cisco Network Convergence System and the second NCS4000supplier’s equipment on portions of its 100G metro network this year, with plans to turn up live traffic in 2016. Supplier volumes will be guided by ongoing testing, support and performance.

Verizon and Cisco are long-standing technology and business partners, and we are pleased to play a key role in Verizon’s optical network modernization program.

Cisco has made investments in next-generation optical technologies to help Verizon realize its vision to transform its network architecture to achieve the speed and operational efficiency required to meet the demands of today, while capturing growth opportunities over the next decade.

This new architecture gives Verizon advantages in its metro network including increased capacity, superior latency and improved scalability.

Verizon is a leader in 100G technology having successfully completed several industry firsts, beginning in 2007 with a successful field trial of 100G optical traffic on a live system.

Verizon and Cisco Showcase New Technologies at Verizon Innovation Center West

More than 99 percent of things in the physical world are still not connected to the Internet. The Internet of Everything (IoE) has the potential to connect the unconnected, thereby opening up unprecedented opportunities. But, it’s not just things that are connected to the Internet. People, such as athletes, are looking to utilize technology, such as our IoE, to improve their performances.

Verizon re-launched on Oct. 8 the Verizon Innovation Center West in downtown San Francisco. The newly-expanded Innovation Center is comprised of collaborative lab environments, private lab space, demonstration and seminar areas, as well as office space that engineers and member companies can utilize to work with others to advance wireless technologies.
