Cisco Continues Market Share Leadership in Mobility – First in Mobile IP Infrastructure, Packet Core, Mobile Backhaul, and Mobile IP Core

Over the summer, we shared with you the results of an ACG Report showing Cisco as the market share leader in Mobility.

Then and today the usage of mobile devices has been on the rise. Unequivocally.

The average smartphone user is accessing 26.8 apps every month for about 30.25 hours, an increase of 65 percent from two years ago. On their first weekend of offering the iPhone 6, Apple sold more than 10 Million units. Global smartphone market is forecasted to rise by around 20% to 1.2 billion units during 2014.

ACG Research came out with a new report recently the highlights of which I want to share with you. In this report Ray Mota notes that the Worldwide Mobile IP Infrastructure Market continues to rebound in Q2, 2014. It actually grew in Q2, increasing to $1.25 billion, a 9.6 percent quarter over quarter. Evolved Packet Core (MME, PGW, SGW, and PCRF) also grew this quarter to $123 million, a 7.2 per cent quarter over quarter.

ACG Research maintains its views that online video continues to fuel mobile data traffic and the industry expects a tenfold increase in five years.  Mobile spending continues and is increasing globally as carriers in developed countries vie for top billing for fastest carrier, fueling LTE spending. 3G remains strong and continues to grow as developing economies upgrade and invest in this technology. Mobile infrastructure will continue to be a highly dynamic market for the next several years as vendors and carriers work through new technologies.

The Agile (r)Evolution – Mobile Heads to the Cloud

Co-Authored by Ian Hood, Senior Manager, Service Provider Architecture & Dan Kurschner, Senior Manager, Service Provider Mobility

Business Challenge:  Everything Goes Mobile

The dynamic state of the business of service providers is quite apparent these days, and perhaps this is most evident for the mobility providers as everyone and everything goes mobile.  All of their consumers, be they individual or business, are clamoring for new capabilities that can automate their business and simplify their lives.  In addition there is a new class (or breed) of consumer – “Things”.  Whether it is the connected car, city, bus, or kitchen appliances, “Things” are increasingly using the mobile network.  Many of these new services and applications are readily available from “Over the Top” (OTT) providers that do not necessarily have any network upon which to deliver them. The OTT business model is designed for service creation agility, leaving it up to the operators to provide network access, quality of experience, and service assurance while managing the exploding demands for bandwidth and spectrum. Good News Keep Coming on the Mobility Front

Recently I shared with you an ACG Research report which shows Cisco leading in Mobile IP Infrastructure and gaining market share.

Now step with me into the future for a moment and picture this.

2018 -- nearly 21 billion globally networked devices and connections are live, 7.3 billion M2M are online, four billion global Internet users are connected, and IP video  represents 79 percent of all Internet traffic. According to a recent Cisco Visual Networking Index study, this is a mere glimpse of the future. And who is at the heart of enabling all of this? You’re right, mobile service providers.

The next thing you will want to know is what puts them in this sweet spot. Capturing  the opportunities afforded by everything going mobile is not easy. Yet service providers alerted at this high-stakes business promise of the future are racing to set themselves up with the means to leverage it. They are employing an architectural approach to their networks that will allow them a couple of things; apply Read More »

Cisco & Telecom New Zealand Test Cisco EPC with LTE-A Category 6

To think that the number of connected devices will grow to possibly 10 billion by 2018 with some forecasts as high as 40 billion connected devices by 2020, that is mindboggling. That means that there will be about 10 connected devices for every man, woman and child on the planet.

1

While most of the connected devices will only send a few characters and then go silent, people like you and I who own the mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, wearable devices) the need for speed is still very much a requirement.

The Test

So recently Telecom New Zealand performed a series of networking tests with Cisco leveraging LTE-A or LTE-Advanced. As a key LTE-A technology, carrier aggregation allows for full utilization of operators’ spectrum resources, empowering them to provide faster mobile broadband experiences including video conferencing, high-definition content transmission, high-speed video downloads, social networking and more.

Cisco Joins China Mobile at Mobile Asia Expo (MAE)

Mobile is a fast-changing industry! Every year there are new devices, new technologies, and trends.

China is one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world with:

  • 1.2 billion mobile connections and growing.
  • The number of 3G mobile telephone users reached 386 million in November 2013, a growth of 154 million over the same period of last year.
  • Smart phones in China reached 348 million units from January to October 2013
  • December 2013, China had 500 million mobile Internet users, a growth of 80.09 million compared with that at the end of 2012

The number one mobile operator in China is China Mobile with an estimated 781M subscribers as of Q1 2014. To handle such a large customer base China Mobile has become an industry leader with their vision of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in the quest to control operational costs and create the network elasticity new services creation.

Just as Cisco did in the China Mobile Booth at MWC 2014, Cisco is joining China Mobile at Mobile Asia Expo (MAE) in their “Network Function Virtualization Demonstration” located in the China Mobile
