Highlights from AFCEA Homeland Security Conference: Remaining Ever-Vigilant

AFCEA Homeland SecurityLast week I had the opportunity to attend the AFCEA Homeland Security conference in Washington, D.C.

Eleven days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the first Director of the Office of Homeland Security was appointed leading to the combination of 22 different federal departments and agencies into a unified, integrated cabinet agency when it was established in 2002.

The Department has a vital mission to secure the U.S. from many threats with capabilities that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity to chemical facility inspections.

The three day conference focused on a number of important topics including:

  • Mobility and Interoperability
  • Information Sharing and Fusion Centers
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Role of Laboratories and Scientific Research in Homeland Security
  • Cybersecurity Education and Continuous Diagnostics and Monitoring

Mobile Government and Telework Week 2014

rpodEach year I pledge to telework along with thousands of others for the annual Telework Week.  Today, I worked from my rpod parked in front of my house.  My rpod is my personal smart work space and provides me everything I need to work at home or on the road with secure mobility capabilities that allow me to access all my meetings, applications, and collaboration tools to do my job.

In fact, I could have worked from anywhere and have been teleworking for the past several years.

The Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 (Act) was signed into law on December 9, 2010. The objective is to achieve greater flexibility in managing the workforce through the use of telework. Telework programs  and best practices provide agencies a valuable tool to meet mission objectives while helping employees enhance work/life effectiveness to:

  • Improve Continuity of Operations to help ensure that essential Federal functions continue during emergency situations including snow storms
  • Promote management effectiveness when telework is used to target reductions in management costs and environmental impact and transit costs
  • Enhance work-life balance and allows employees to better manage their work and family obligations

This year, Telework Week 2014, was the fourth-annual global effort to encourage agencies, organizations, and individuals to pledge. A total of 163,495 pledges collectively saved $14,003,872 in commuting costs and spared the environment 9,066 tons of pollutants.

Summary: Tackling Mobile Security Risks for Government

As mobility becomes more pervasive, these concepts of cyber crime have become engrained in our work/life culture. These issues have earned national news headlines as governments across the globe grapple with how to build both secure and mobile-enabled infrastructures.

A few weeks ago, Cisco and Mobile Work Exchange released findings from a self-assessment tool that highlights some interesting statistics, enabling us to better understand mobile security best practices and vulnerabilities. The report specifically looks at government employees, 90 percent of whom claim to use at least one mobile device for work, and reveals that many government workers (41 percent) are putting themselves and their agencies at risk. Tackling Mobile Security Risks for Government

“Cyber threats. Security breaches. Hacking.”

As mobility becomes more pervasive, these words have become engrained in our work/life culture. The issue of cyber crime has earned national news headlines as governments across the globe grapple with how to build both secure and mobile-enabled infrastructures.

Here are a few other compelling findings:

  • On mobile devices, 31 percent use a public Wi-Fi connection and 25 percent do not set passwords.
  • 6 percent of government employees who use a mobile device for work say they have lost or misplaced their phone. In the average Federal agency, that’s more than 3,500 chances for a security breach.
  • Despite the Federal Digital Government Strategy, more than one in four government employees have not received mobile security training from their agencies.

Mobile Telework: Cost Effective, Flexible and Secure

RPODIMG_5776I really love my mobile devices, my iPhoneiPod, and rPod.

What’s an rPoD you ask? It’s my mobile getaway vehicle.

I can get access to mobile apps, listen to music, and enjoy a getaway to the coast. These devices are not just for fun though, these are powerful tools that allow me to telework from home or in reality anywhere and anytime. My mobile apps include my email, calendar, webex, jabber and other apps required for me to do my job.  I’m more productive, it’s more cost-effective, and very flexible.  And, it’s secure.

This week, I’m attending the RSA security conference in San Francisco.  Mobile device security and cyber security are some of the hot topics in the keynotes, special government sessions, and throughout the event. I’m able to attend this event to learn about the new technologies available to secure mobile devices and cloud and also the expanding cybersecurity threats. At the same time, I’m productive, mobile and secure.

Next week, like most every week, I will be teleworking. Please join me and more than 100,000 others to support Telework Week.

Cisco, in partnership with the Mobile Work Exchange, is a proud supporter of Telework Week from March 4-8. Telework Week 2013 is a global effort to encourage government agencies, business organizations, and individuals to pledge to telework anytime during this week. Please take a minute to visit this site to learn more about the benefits of Telework, pledge to support this initiative, and use the calculator to estimate savings. I have been teleworking for nearly 20 years and plan to continue to enjoy the benefits for mobility and telework for years to come.
