By Robert Mahowald, IDC Program Vice President, SaaS and Cloud Services
We recently surveyed more than 3,450 executive-level IT decisionmakers in 17 countries to find out their future plans and current state of cloud adoption. What we discovered is pretty remarkable.
According to IDC’s CloudView Survey, 57% of organizations are already using or planning to implement some form of cloud services. Many organizations we surveyed (44%) are using or planning to implement private clouds. But respondents pointed to hybrid cloud — a strategy for operating in a mix of public and private cloud environments — as their dominant operational model, at 64% of all organizations surveyed.

Did you know that Lync is a fully supported client in Cisco Collaboration Meeting Room (Cisco CMR) meetings.
When we say interoperability we mean it. Even when that means supporting proprietary protocols. For instance, to ensure that Microsoft Lync and Skype for Business users can fully experience the power of Cisco conferencing.
IDC released the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Unified Communications and Collaboration 2015 Vendor Assessment last month. In it, Rich Costello notes that Cisco is “perennially the worldwide market share leader in enterprise IP telephony solutions, as well as advanced capabilities such as telepresence, Web conferencing services, and enterprise session border control (SBC).” (Thank you IDC.)
That doesn’t mean we’re the only option. People sometimes need to use third-party endpoints and applications to connect to Cisco meetings. We’ve enabled Lync users to participate in Cisco conferences with high-quality voice and video for years. Now we’ve enhanced that experience by enabling them to also fully share and view content. And when it comes to cloud there’s a lot to talk about. According to a new IDC white paper, sponsored by Cisco, “Enabling Partner Value in the Cloud Economy”, 68 percent of companies with more than 1,000 employees are using some form of cloud or plan to implement cloud within the next 12 months. In addition, companies adopting cloud expect to spend 54 percent of their IT budgets on cloud within the next two years.
For the white paper, IDC contacted 23 providers from among the more than 200 cloud providers offering Cisco Powered services. What makes the white paper unique is that these partners are sharing their perspective on the value of the Cloud and Managed Services Program and how CMSP has helped them expand their business. These companies are investing substantial resources into building out their infrastructure to offer customers cloud services as they need them. They are making their investments based on what they believe are customers’ primary needs and key concerns.
Specifically, the white paper explores which perceived factors are the most important to cloud providers in reaching their customer. It also reveals how partners seek to differentiate themselves and where they see the best value in their cloud infrastructure investments. Read More »

A new whitepaper from IDC, “The Workspace-as-a-Service Opportunity: Why Now is the Time for Desktop as a Service” is a must-read for any organization facing the challenge of delivering applications and services to employees on mobile devices. According to IDC, corporate-liable smartphone shipments will reach 110 million units in 2014. In comparison, employee-liable smartphone shipments will exceed 220 million in 2014.
The increased productivity and collaboration that mobile technologies offer businesses is substantial. The ability to access the full workspace experience anywhere, anytime, on any device gives organizations incredible flexibility and agility. However, maximizing the benefits of mobile technology comes at the cost of adding significant complexity to IT operations. Minimizing cost and risk is challenging as well, considering that many organizations simply don’t have the expertise to deploy, manage, and scale client virtualization in an efficient and effective manner.
For these reasons, IDC has determined that “it makes more sense than ever for IT leaders to consider a cloud-based client virtualization offering.” This can be achieved through remote access of a centralized virtual desktop through the cloud, commonly known as Desktop as a Service (DaaS).
The whitepaper explores key topics relating to when desktop virtualization is an option, benefits organizations can gain from cloud-based DaaS, integration challenges IT will need to meet, and important considerations to keep in mind when selecting a cloud provider.
Read the IDC whitepaper for yourself. You can also learn more about Desktop as a Service as well as locate providers offering enterprise-class DaaS tailored to meet your specific business needs.
