It seems customary around the December time frame to look back over the year and chart the highlights and successes. The challenge with doing that for a programme like Cisco British Innovation Gateway (BIG) is there are so many areas that one could review.
That said, the key highlight for me has to be the opening of the fantastic Innovation and Digital Enterprise Alliance London or IDEALondon a facility that Cisco recently opened in partnership with University College London, and DC Thomson, in the heart of Shoreditch. The British Innovation Gateway (BIG) is a great Cisco-led initiative to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the UK. A great part of my work on BIG involves the support of IDEALondon – Cisco’s innovation centre -- and its start-ups. It was only a year ago that we were all eagerly anticipating London 2012 in our role as network infrastructure supporter. It was exciting, at times daunting and – looking back – tremendous to be at the heart of bringing the Games to the world.
To quote Lord Coe at the closing ceremony, “we did it right.” In many ways, the end of the Games was actually the start for us. That’s why on the back of our success, I’m looking forward to 2013 with huge optimism. It’s time to make our Games legacy a reality.
Back in 2011, we pledged to support the development of Tech City in London and the Government’s wider UK growth and innovation agenda. Seven months after launching the Cisco BIG Awards 2012: 300+ entries; 13 semi-finalists and 6 finalists later, we finally announced the winners at Cisco House last Wednesday.
A momentous occasion for our British Innovation Gateway initiative, the winners were announced following a live Dragon’s Den style pitch by all six BIG Award finalists.
