For more than 20 years, I poured everything into my career as a public relations executive. I helped hundreds of clients across industries — from tech to retail, healthcare to hospitality. But one dream stayed on the back burner: writing a book of my own.
That changed when I joined Cisco.
Right away, I knew I was in a place that supported me — professionally and personally. Surrounded by driven, creative peers, I finally felt at home. And for the first time, I could see a path to building the life I imagined — at work and beyond.
Over six years at Cisco, I’ve grown as a leader, teacher, and storyteller. I’ve led communications for Cisco DevNet, Meraki, Cloud Networking, and more. And because of the trust and flexibility Cisco gives me, I’ve also had space to be a mom, a wife, a cat lover — and now, an author.
From Notes at the Table to a Book on the Shelf
Becoming a mother opened my heart in new ways. It helped me see the richness of our multicultural family — and the stories still waiting to be told. I began jotting down ideas at the kitchen table, between meetings and bedtime routines.
Those notes became Me Llamo Checkers — a story about an unconventional family and a tribute to my Mexican-American heritage, presented in both English and Spanish. In it, three characters connect and support each other — despite their different colors, personalities, and even species. This book is just the beginning of a planned series inspired by my own journey: finding love and happiness by being myself — something that working here at Cisco helped me discover and fully embrace.
The Community That Made It Possible
Belonging is a practice, not a poster. At Cisco, I found momentum and mentorship through groups like Women of Cisco, Next Generation Leaders, and Conexión Latinx Network. I’m constantly encouraged by the stories I see shared and the communities I follow and contribute to. Never in any time of my professional career have I been surrounded by so much positivity. It wasn’t just about connecting; it was about finding others who understood the juggle, who cheered me on, and who reminded me, during quick check-ins on Webex or lunchtime webinars: I’m not alone.
That support system helped me balance parenting, caregiving, and professional growth. It gave me tools to stay focused, ask for help, and keep going. Whether I’m leading a product launch or joining a PTA event, I can be fully present. That balance brings clarity to all parts of my life.
What Helped Me Make It Real
You might be a parent, a caregiver, or a recent grad. Most of us want the same thing: meaningful work and a full life. Here’s what helped me:
- Share your goals with your manager. Flexibility starts with communication.
- Build a steady rhythm. Small steps add up.
- Use the tools you have. A simple to-do list works wonders.
- Find your people. Peer groups turn ambition into action.
- Protect joy. A walk, a chapter, a laugh — these are the resets that fuel the work.
Why This Matters
We move faster when we’re clear on outcomes and generous with trust. It’s how we stay present for the people we love. I’m proud of the value I provide to Cisco partners and developers as an ecosystem and developers marketing networking manager. I’m just as proud that I can close my laptop, be fully present with my husband and son, and return with fresh energy. That balance isn’t just a perk — it’s the point. Cisco’s flexible work schedule and supportive culture make me feel so confident that I can truly do it all.
My journey to making Me Llamo Checkers a reality is more than a personal milestone — it’s proof that when you’re part of an organization that values your whole self, you can achieve your dreams and create something meaningful. Something that helps others feel seen, connected, and loved.
