There’s a new buzz phrase making the rounds recently around the concept of the “stack fallacy,” with the premise being that market leaders in any industry are well adept at going “down the stack” in terms of innovation but constantly struggle to stave off more nimble upstarts who are creating disruption in the layers above. The underlying factor, according to the source of this theory, is companies focusing too much on the tools they need to build and not enough on solving the evolving needs of their customers.unleashingit

As the undisputed leader in networking infrastructure for decades, Cisco is now faced with this innovator’s dilemma with the emergence of SDN, or software-defined networking, which has spawned countless wannabes hoping to redefine how enterprise networks should be built. But as evidenced by the progress Cisco has made from vision to reality with the Cisco® Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI), it is clear that Cisco is succeeding in every measure in overcoming the stack fallacy challenges.

Cisco introduced the ACI a little over a year ago. Since then more than 1000 customers have already deployed the groundbreaking SDN architecture as part of their application deployment and management processes. We believe the key success factor has been our ability to build the ACI ground-up on the fundamental understanding that that today’s enterprises must do a lot more with a lot less, and do it a lot faster.

Cisco incorporated this design principle into the original ACI architecture and has constantly evolved it with customer-driven features and capabilities such as:

What if you were able to give everyone in your organization the flexibility and freedom to securely work anywhere in the world and on any device? What types of productivity gains would your company see as a result? What efficiencies or cost savings might your IT department receive from moving desktops to your datacenter and managing these virtual workstations through one single pane of glass?

Our Cisco UCS team is excited to present the new Maxwell generation NVIDIA Tesla M6 GPU for the Cisco UCS B200M4 Blade and the NVIDIA Tesla M60 GPU for Cisco 2U Rack Rack Servers. Cisco and NVIDIA have joined forces to deliver this new graphics solution.  Combining security, reliability and manageability from Cisco UCS and adding NVIDIA’s GRID technology, we’re able to deliver performance and speed needed to run high-end applications on virtual desktops. What’s better is that you have two form factor options to fit your organization’s’ data center footprint.

The M60 Rack GPU is supported with UCS Manager 3.1(1) and later & Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) 2.0(9) and later; the M6 Blade GPU is supported with both UCS Manager 3.1(1) and 2.2(7) and later.

With Cisco UCS & NVIDIA GRID, you can now expand your virtualization footprint without compromising performance or user experience while also increasing security. This means, you can empower your workforce to create anything around the world, from any location with the ease and flexibility.

The new Cisco & NVIDIA M6 Blade GPU solution is fully integrated with the flagship B200M4 Server, supporting all CPU configurations and performance on par with NVIDIA K2 GPU, at less than half the power profile!  With two of the M60 GPU’s on Cisco UCS C240M4, you can now enable high density NVIDIA Tesla Compute and GRID 2.0 VDI user consolidation, which is over 8,000 CUDA cores & 32GB of GPU memory for up to 64 GPU-accelerated virtual desktop users.

This is especially exciting for organizations in the Oil and Gas, Manufacturing and Design industries since historically, this type of work demanded high-end applications like ESRI, AutoCAD, Petrel and Siemens to be used in on-site with workstations. But now, these types of applications can be powered virtually through your data center to any device.

Take an airplane manufacturer for example. With a follow-the-sun working model, this organization can now empower its employees to design from anywhere in the world with the device they prefer, while all working on the same application in real-time. This helps the company save time, money and fuels rapid innovation. Last but not least, this is all done while maintaining security for the organization.

Empower your employees to create flexibly, securely and from any device and any location in the world. Now possible with Cisco UCS & NVIDIA GRID.

On January 20, 2016, a new Linux Kernel zero-day vulnerability (CVE-2016-0728) was disclosed by Perception Point. The vulnerability has the potential to allow attackers to gain root on affected devices by running a malicious Android or Linux application.

Our investigation is ongoing; however, at this time we have not identified any Cisco products as exploitable. Should this change, we will publish a Security Advisory on the Cisco Security Portal.

Faced with challenges spurred by new trends in their work environment such as BYOD, more geographically dispersed teams and move to the cloud, RSA is using Cisco Unified Access to collaborate better, be more productive and reduce costs. RSA uses Catalyst 3850 Converged Access to truly integrate wired and wireless networks, Cisco Identity Services Engine to uniformly apply policies, and Cisco Prime to manage devices, users and resources in their network. Talking about the benefits of using Converged Access on Catalyst 3850 switches, James Sandell, Group IT Delivery Director at RSA, says “People can only work flexibly with real time presence because the underpinning wifi is rock solid, fast and its seamless to join. We use Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches with IOS XE software and integrated wireless controller and it provides One network, one management and one policy”.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the day when I could write that headline and post this news: We have completed the acquisition of Acano. Today, two winning teams with a common vision for the future of work become one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSCiK8OwMzc

Here are the top three things we’ll be delivering together:

#1 Users Will Get More Choice
The iPhone wouldn’t be very popular if it couldn’t call a Samsung Galaxy or a Motorola Moto G, would it? People just wouldn’t buy a phone that couldn’t connect to any other phone. And yet, in the office, we’ve had to tolerate such inoperability. That’s about to change.

Separately, Cisco and Acano have been laser-focused on bringing interoperability to the enterprise. Together, we’ll solve some of the tough problems that have made collaborating at work too hard for too long. This is absolutely critical to the future of collaboration at work, and no one is tackling it better than this new team. Continue reading “Acano Joins Cisco: It’s Official”

“Put your oxygen mask before others.” I have heard this mantra again and again this year in different women’s conferences and seminars.  And this was the first message from Adam Grant, the opening speaker at last month’s Massachusetts Conference for Women (CFW).

This seems logical if you think in terms of plane emergencies. If you are able to breathe, you can help the person sitting next to you, whether they’re family, friends or anyone else who needs help. In day-to- day life, this holds true too.Mantra1

This October will mark the 10th anniversary of the immersive telepresence segment – one that we pioneered with the Cisco TelePresence System 3000 Series.

And as if by kismet, on the eve of this tenth year, demand for immersive systems soared as never before. Just last month, we shipped the 1,000th IX5000 system, our latest-generation immersive telepresence product. This is the fastest ramp in the history of the immersive segment, happening within the first year of the IX5000’s introduction. That’s no small feat for a product with a $300K list price (a price that’s unchanged since the 2006 introduction, despite significant innovations.)

KO58125(2)

What makes this milestone even more interesting is that some predicted the demise of the immersive segment just a couple of years ago. But we persisted despite the naysayers. Why? We were driven by the same vision we had 10 years ago:  To take a meeting table, cut it in half, and add 5,000 miles in between. And yet, it still feels like everyone is in the same room – life-sized, effortlessly, and almost magically.

As it was ten years ago, users today are awestruck the first time they experience immersive telepresence. For globally dispersed businesses, the benefits very quickly become real. Organizations become enthralled with how it can transform their business. Travel avoidance is an obvious benefit, but the immediacy of decision-making, the relationship- and trust-building, and the power to collaborate over thousands of miles are the true assets. This is why more than 75% of Fortune 500 companies have purchased our immersive systems. Continue reading “Immersive Telepresence Still Enthralls on Tenth Anniversary”
