802.11ac is the hottest topic of discussion and deployment in WiFi over the past couple of years. Ratified as a standard by the IEEE in November 2013, the first phase of 802.11ac products brought to market is commonly referred to as Wave 1, and provides roughly a 3x improvement in network performance over its predecessor 802.11n: 1.3 Gbps compared to 450 Mbps in 5 GHz respectively when utilizing the maximum channel width and modulation supported .

Next up 11ac Wave 2, the next phase in 802.11ac, will begin entering the market later in 2015 in the form of both new client devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) and new Access Points and modules, providing two significant enhancements building on Wave 1802.11ac image1

The world’s economy is increasingly interconnected. Continued economic growth stems from companies being able to move data freely across borders without being caught between conflicting legal requirements.  Governments also face challenges in their efforts to protect public safety when data needed to conduct lawful investigations are stored in the cloud. Internet users, in turn, expect that their email will receive protections that are equivalent to those afforded paper documents. Therefore, the challenge we face is to develop a modern, efficient, transparent mechanism that protects reasonable expectations of user privacy when law enforcement demands access to the contents of electronic communications in the cloud.

Today, Representatives Tom Marino (R-PA) and Suzan DelBene (D-WA) introduced bipartisan legislation in the House to tackle this important problem.

Theirs is a companion to a bill introduced by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Dean Heller (R-NV), and Chris Coons (D-DE) earlier this month.

On behalf of Cisco, I’d like to thank these members for their leadership and to express support for the goals of their legislation.

The Law Enforcement Access to Data Stored Abroad (LEADS) Act offers a new framework for striking the balance between the government’s need to investigate crime and the Constitution’s protections against unreasonable search and seizure in the context of a globally connected world.

This proposal builds upon bipartisan efforts to amend the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) in both the House and the Senate, which we also support.

Cisco urges Congress to take up these important issues quickly.

We continue to believe that the security threats facing nations are real and significant, and governments need to be able to take steps to address these threats and protect their citizens against crime and terrorism. At the same time, we must update our laws so that they respect innovation and enable new technologies to grow.

Whether they are ‘leaning in’ or ‘breaking through the glass ceiling’, the number of women in the global Service Provider (SP) and Cable industries is growing rapidly. Many female executives are at the helm– or in key leadership roles — of SP firms that are transforming their businesses and architectures. These are exciting times that call for celebration, but we are not done yet.

At next week’s annual Mobile World Congress, women will be front and center at two key events held on Tuesday, March 3 in Barcelona. Cisco is hosting Connected Women Leaders@MWC, bringing together women around the world to Continue reading “Celebrating Women in the Service Provider Industry”

At the Women of Impact Conference this year on March 19th, our focus is to empower attendees to Be Fearless – by taking risks, overcoming obstacles and blazing new trails in their personal and professional lives. The Conference focus is to connect, develop and inspire the women in technology at Cisco.

Meet Sabrina Lin, Vice President Commercial Sales, from the Greater China region who is another one of our featured Fearless Females for the Women of Impact conference.

Sabrina Lin was born in Hong Kong and was raised in a very traditional family. At a young age, her female cousin, an MIT graduate, who took over the family textile business when her father became ill, inspired Sabrina. Without a male heir, she stepped in, implemented many changes to save the company money, and the business has prospered. It’s key to note that in a traditional Asian family, females are often not considered eligible to hold high positions with the business.

Many cultures are bound by tradition. Continue reading “Women of Impact’s 2015 Fearless Female: Sabrina Lin”

As I board the plane ready for the long flights to Barcelona, I’m excited and energised by the prospective of around 100 APAC customer meetings and Cisco technology demos. Hopefully when I get off the plane in the wee hours I’ll remain half as energised.

With all the discussions with Service Provider CxO teams on their expectations for the event, some common top of the mind issues or challenges for Cisco have emerged;

What are the Global trends in Traffic Demand?

Cisco VNI forecasts 10x Mobile Data traffic growth over the next 5-years, nothing new there, but Continue reading “Ready for Mobile World Congress Hot Topics”

I’ll be boarding a flight to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress tomorrow knowing that this year’s event will be like no other for Cisco’s service provider business.

Over the past two years we’ve completely transformed our service provider engineering organization. We’ve overhauled our technology and services portfolio and, as you’ll see from a blitz of announcements we’ll make with world-leading telecommunications service providers next week, we continue to innovate, and customers really like the progress they’re seeing.

Clearly we’re building what they need, but the story of the past 24 months goes far beyond our portfolio. We’ve changed the way we operate. We have removed impediments to rapid innovation, and accelerated the creation of high-performing teams.

If those words sound familiar, then you probably know Agile software development. The principles of Agile have been applied at Cisco for a long while now.  However, what’s really changed in the past two years is summed well in something Agile pioneer Jeff Sutherland wrote in blog marking the 10th anniversary of the agile manifesto:

Individuals adapting to change is not enough. Organizations must be structured for Agile response. Failure to remove impediments that block progress destroys existing high-performing teams and prevents the formation of new high-performing teams.”

I couldn’t agree more. While Cisco was, and still is, structured well to deliver the best routing technology in the industry, we needed to improve our engineering and business structures to be able to dynamically deliver the software products and cloud services customers could use to rapidly implement new businesses models, and drive more profitable outcomes for their customers.

What we’ve done since 2012 represents a massive transformation. I give tremendous credit to Chief Development Officer Pankaj Patel and his Chief Technology Officer Dave Ward, and I’m extremely proud of the results we’re starting to achieve.

The portals that your employees and guests use for enterprise mobility and guest access are a reflection of your company brand and putting your best foot forward means customizing them for a better user experience. The challenge is that customization often requires someone with knowledge of HTML, Java, CSS, and even jQuery skills – in addition to having design skills to properly feature content.

While Cisco offers brand new, out-of-the-box customization with Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) 1.3, we wanted to give customers the ability to do much more – so we’ve introduced a new, web-based tool called the ISE Portal Builder that we demo’d at Cisco Live! in Milan, Italy. The show attendees who came by our booth and attended private showings were really amazed by the capabilities offered and they recognized that the ISE Portal Builder enabled almost anyone to build a beautiful guest, BYOD, profile, sponsor, or MDM portal in minutes at no additional cost.

While we already improved the ISE 1.3 ability to quickly model workflows and do basic customization, utilizing the ISE Portal Builder designers can choose from a suite of templates, or create their own using a drag-and-drop page creator. In addition, we’ve made it easy to import, layout, and manage images and other displayed files. You can add advertisements and banners in different places, and even add them into a rotating carousel. You can select up to 17 languages and even create a custom portal for each!

To access the tool go to http://isepb.cisco.com and register using your CCO ID.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for us in big data land. One thing that struck me is how much we learned about the big data and analytics space after hours at Strata Hadoop, and sometimes that can be just as exciting as what we learn during the sessions. I have a couple of videos I like to share with you to prove my point.

In this video, I learned some things from Jim Scott, MapR. First, MapR is providing –and get ready because it’s a mouthful—“ an online, Interactive, platform neutral, vendor agnostic training” — and some cool use cases of a Hadoop cluster in a briefcase.

It’s also fun to get together with our various partners and talk about the great solutions we are doing together. In this video, I have MapR and Platfora do all the work. Hey it was after hours!
