Not to long ago I was at the Cisco Executive Briefing Center (EBC) presenting to a customer with a co-worker of mine named Bob. It’s not uncommon for us to present together and I enjoy the dual role of going back and forth as I think it makes for a much better experience with customers combining the story of collaboration with real world examples of video. This EBC presentation was the last of the day and on our way out we came across a group of women by the fishbowl. The fishbowl (so aptly named) is a large, round room with glass walls that houses the demonstrations.

We stopped to chat and came to learn that this was a delegation of women working in IT as part of the TechWomen (http://www.techwomen.org) program. TechWomen is a professional mentorship and exchange program developed in response to President Obama’s efforts to strengthen relations between the United States and the Middle East and North Africa. We spent a few minutes asking questions and learning about the program, where everybody was from, and what their interests were in the area of technology.

Last March Cisco announced plans to build the world’s largest global Intercloud with partners. We have been working diligently to create a world of connected private, public and hybrid clouds based on secure, open connectivity. The Intercloud ecosystem now has over 50 partners with more than 350 data centers, in over 50 countries! We are pleased with the significant industry interest and adoption.  work everywhere

While every cloud has a data center, the overall cloud architecture and ecosystem represent far more than just the data center. The same is true for our Cisco blog platforms. We have had a data center blog platform but no cloud blog platform to represent all of the topics related to our Intercloud vision and strategy.

Today, we’re introducing Cisco’s first dedicated cloud blog channel.

Cisco Blogs Cloud (Bookmark http://blogs.cisco.com/cloud) will host private, public and hybrid cloud topics, designed to educate you on what a world of many clouds can do for you.  We are moving beyond just the data center. I hope you find these topics informational and useful.

#CiscoChat

Whether you’re four or forty, fear is an emotion that we have all experienced. But as we grow older, childhood frights like the monsters we’re convinced live under our beds give way to more ‘adult’ fears that keep us from taking risks, seeking adventure and pursuing our goals and dreams.

As women continue to explore and define what it personally means to ‘Lean In’ and seek inspiration for conquering fears and achieving goals, Cisco’s Women of Impact team used an interactive (and inspiring) #CiscoChat to explore what empowers women to ‘Be Fearless.’

Led by myself for the Cisco’s Women of Impact conference, Catalina Kowal from Cisco’s Empowered Women’s Network, Cindy Cooley & Chris Herl from Cisco’s Men for Inclusion, over 100 women engaged in the real-time ‘Be Fearless’ #CiscoChat, connecting and sharing ideas on living a life full of passionate pursuits in the absence of fear. They discussed their fearless role models, the risks that have paid off for them , what inspires their fearless career pursuits – and much more.

So what were the takeaways? We’ve pulled a few key insights, keen observations and powerful stories Continue reading “Be Fearless #CiscoChat Opens Dialogue on Fear, Failures and Triumphs for Women in the Workplace”

Roxanne EdwardsGuest blog and interview written by Roxanne Edwards

At the Women of Impact Conference this year on March 19th, our focus is to empower attendees to Be Fearless – by taking risks, overcoming obstacles and blazing new trails in their personal and professional lives. The Conference focus is to connect, develop and inspire the women in technology at Cisco.

A good manager cares about people and is always available to listen.  When Kyoko started her career 29 years ago as a Systems Engineer, she was lucky to have a good manager.  She was continually encouraged to step outside her comfort zone and challenged to do more.

With a Bachelors Degree in Literature and a major in Japanese history, Kyoko took a risk and became fearless as she entered Continue reading “Women of Impact’s 2015 Fearless Female: Kyoko Fujii”

According to North Carolina Governor McCrory, 27,000 military service members in his state will leave the armed forces in 2015 alone, representing a massive pool of highly-skilled talent. Military veterans have a strong work ethic, are accustomed to working under pressure, can make decisions smartly but swiftly, and are well organized.

But often the greatest challenge they have is translating those skills into something that we, in the civilian workforce, can understand and relate to our job requirements.

Cisco is working with the state of North Carolina to address this problem. Today, we joined Governor McCrory to announce the launch of the NC Military Pipeline, a sophisticated online platform that maps military occupation codes to civilian career paths and job openings. The Pipeline was developed by Durham, North Carolina-based Futures, Inc. with more than $2 million seed funding from Cisco.

The NC Military Pipeline will help veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses, reservists, and National Guardsmen find jobs through:

  • Job postings
  • Training and certification programs
  • Career assessment tools
  • Career path exploration
  • Communities of people with similar interests

Cisco will lead a coalition of IT companies — initially including CompTIA, NetApp, Citrix, LPI, NDG and Oracle – that will post their training programs and certification programs on the NC Military Pipeline.

We expect the Cisco Networking Academy program will play a major role in this initiative, offering training on Cisco equipment and preparation for Cisco certifications. Networking Academy courses are offered at 82 institutions across North Carolina, which have taught more than 53,000 students since 1997. One of them is Clint Abrams, a U.S. Army staff sergeant who now works as a Cisco technical support engineer:

Thanks to Larry Carter, former Cisco CFO and a current trustee of the Cisco Foundation board, for representing Cisco at the event today. We are all proud to support North Carolina and Governor McCrory in making North Carolina the showcase state for veterans’ employment. And we hope today is just the first step in creating a blueprint for all states with a major military presence to follow.

#CiscoChat

Social chats are not new. What we’re doing differently is creating a regularly scheduled program that is platform-agnostic, and leverages a single hashtag to enable discussions over Twitter, Google+ Hangouts on Air, podcasts and more. Our new #CiscoChat program not only unites customers, partners and influencers together to discuss technology and business trend topics in real time, but it enables our audience to continue the conversation with Cisco and the social media community, even after a social chat event ends.

What You Can Expect:
#CiscoChat events will take place live on Twitter and Google+ Hangout On Air, and will feature Cisco spokespeople, thought leaders, technical experts, analysts, partners, Cisco Champions and customers from around the world. Topics will range from collaboration disruption to women in STEM to security implications for the Internet of Everything and more.

How To Participate:

  • Follow the discussion, contribute questions, and submit comments by using the #CiscoChat hashtag in your social media posts.
  • Check the full calendar for upcoming #CiscoChat events at cisco.com/go/ciscochat.
  • Email ciscochat@cisco.com to let us know how we can improve the experience for you and recommend topics for future #CiscoChat events.

We look forward to chatting with you!
