FullSizeRender copyMy grandmother, now eight years passed, used to tell the best stories about Vietnam. I remember one about my grandfather who wooed her with a popsicle on one of his early visits. In the incessant heat of a mid-1940s Hanoi summer, this was a feat of magnificent proportions.

But it would be rude to eat it in front of him, she thought. So she set the popsicle aside on a plate to save until after he leaves. When later she went to retrieve it, she would only find a small puddle and stick where her popsicle once was. Through tears, she chastised her siblings for coveting the gift from her beloved. Then someone explained the power of refrigeration to her, and that sealed the deal. She decided my grandfather was a man of the world and would make a suitable husband.

Ah, in the middle of Silicon Valley, there’s no greater love story than one aided by technology. So, I racked my brain to extract a good one for the amusement of my future grandchildren. brunel1Understanding how quickly technology is growing year over year, Brunel University London looked to Cisco to enhance its bring your own device (BYOD) program with an all-encompassing and reliable WiFi access solution. In addition to the continuous WiFi access, Brunel University needed to make sure that network usage was both secure and visible.

To meet the University’s needs, Cisco devised and delivered a complete BYOD Smart Solution that included access points (APs), controllers, security and network management. This solution needed to be robust enough for the 17,000 University users spread out over the 70 campus buildings.

The Cisco solution included the Cisco Aironet 3700 Series APs with integrated 802.11ac, Cisco Mobility Service Engine, Cisco Application Visibility and Control (AVC) for Wireless, Cisco Wireless Service Module 2 (WiSM2), Cisco SCE 8000 Series Service Control Engine as well as Cisco security, management and services software. Cisco Live excited many delegates this year, and one of the highlights was the World of Solutions. “Only Cisco could pull this off” one delegate mentioned on Social media (#CLUS). There was an even stronger sense of confidence that Cisco was relevant to many industry verticals this year. The Industrial section of the ‘Cisco Campus’ showed off tons of new advances, and, for the first time, a small but important process industries (including Oil and Gas) booth opened up showing the services-based solutions Secure Ops and Collaborative Operations. Let’s talk about Collaborative Operations.

As you learn in the Video, Suresh Venkat speaks to the how Collaborative Operations goes beyond the ‘one-to-many’ collaborative solutions out there today, and provided a ‘many-to-many’ experience, that can be ‘always-on’ and people, data, and things can be brought into the session to create a more productive process (yes, that sounds a bit like the Internet of Everything – and it is an example!). Having that kind of capability can reduce downtime in, for example, the oil and gas industry, or or any industry that’s looking for a control room type environment to plan, monitor or react to situations and incidents or progress projects more rapidly.

The solution can bring in surveillance media, any endpoint audio including two-way radio, and integrate with mobile wireless collaboration devices like the Librestream camera he displayed. The ‘multiple-tile’ single-pane-of-glass approach demonstrated other integrations as well. Not only news feeds (useful for assessing situations from a news-media/PR perspective), but also feeds from SCADA data analysis systems like the BRS Labs panel Suresh shows in the video, and the Bit Stew analytics software visualization feed demonstrated live at the show.

As Suresh sums up “It’s all about getting the right people together at the right time with the right resources and make a decision in real time”.

Cisco Application Virtual Switch (AVS), a virtual member of the Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) family has seen increasing interest from customers who want to enforce application centric policies all the way to the virtual edge of the data center.

Cisco AVS is a derivative of the Nexus 1000V virtual switch, which is the market leading 3rd party virtual switch in the industry.   Nexus 1000V has accumulated more than 10,000 customers and has been deployed in large-scale service providers to large enterprises. Recently Cisco announced Nexus 1000V support for vSphere 6.0 releases. VMware has also announced to continue supporting Cisco Nexus 1000V in vSphere 6.0 and later releases.

VMware has supported and re-sold Nexus 1000V since we jointly launched the product. Recently (Feb 2nd 2015) VMware has announced that they will stop re-selling product/post-sales support for Nexus 1000V. Cisco will continue to sell and support Nexus 1000V for all customers.

Cisco AVS uses exactly the same vSphere APIs that the Nexus 1000V uses. Cisco AVS has always been supported by Cisco since the launch of ACI and will continue to be supported by Cisco. Currently, ACI with Cisco AVS is supported in vSphere 5.1 and vSphere 5.5 releases. With the latest release 5.2(1)SV3(1.5), Cisco AVS supports the Data Center Micro Segmentation delivered by the ACI. We plan to release vSphere 6.0 support for ACI with Cisco AVS later in second half of CY 2015. Cisco is committed to deliver on the strong customer interest in Cisco AVS and have multiple successful production deployments of Cisco AVS with ACI across our customer install base.

Customers who use either Cisco Nexus 1000V or Cisco AVS are assured that Cisco will continue to innovate and support these products via Cisco Support channel.

To ease adoption, Cisco AVS product and support is included as part of the Cisco ACI product and support agreement. No additional services or products need to be purchased.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many powerful stories can a wall of video screens tell?

Enough to help more than 8300 children whose lives have been torn apart by war, it turns out.

War Child, a Dutch nonprofit that Cisco has supported for ten years with cash and product grants, held a televised event to raise money for its work on June 10. During the show, video reports of children affected by war were shown on a giant 17-by-4-meter “Wall of Friends,” based on Cisco collaboration technology. The Wall of Friends uses the same Cisco technology seen on the “Wall of America” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The TV program, “Friends for War Child,” generated enough donations to help 8317 children.

The power of the Internet of Everything (IoE) lies in connecting the unconnected, bringing together people, process, data and things to create new and exciting possibilities. These connections are already transforming the world today, from corporate business to local government. One area in particular that has been significantly transformed by connectivity over the years is our nation’s defense.

Throughout the past 30 years, Cisco has been working closely with the Department of Defense to transform its operations from a point-to-point world to one that is fully connected. We are proud to have played a role in building the first defense-wide enterprise network, known today as the DoD Information Network (DoDIN). These networks were rapidly extended into the deployed environment, and Cisco was there helping to make that transition. Today, DoD networks are being pushed out even further into the tactical edge connecting sensors, platforms and mobile users. This network capability is critical to supporting all branches of the U.S. military, serving as the connective tissue that transitions enterprise to deployed to tactical edge establishing the Defense Department’s global IoE environment.

Modern battlespace boundaries are consistently harder to define, but IoE technologies such as sensors and collaboration capabilities operating on a secure mission fabric are enabling shared situational awareness, accelerating rapid indications and warnings, and improving real-time collaboration. For example, every element of today’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations – from unnamed vehicles and autonomous sensors to a solider in the field with a handheld decision aid or intelligence analysts in the operations centers – requires a secure, reliable network to connect a vast defense landscape.

In the garrison, the emergence of connected base environments illustrates how IoE is impacting daily military operations. IoE-driven solutions such as energy-monitoring, smart street lighting and advanced asset tracking can help bases around the world operate more effectively, provide information for better decision-making and improve cost efficiencies. The medical and logistics environments, for example, are replete with sensors that can monitor, control, optimize and automate their unique mission operations. From bases to tactical edge, the DoD will continue to adapt and refine its “Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs)” necessary to improve mission effectiveness across every branch of the U.S. military.

So what’s next?

As today’s battlespace boundaries continue to evolve, the need for agility, resilience and adaptability is more critical than ever. Similarly, the strategies and technologies required to achieve success will change and Cisco will be there to support the defense community with solutions for service members around the world. We are committed to helping the DoD build and maintain the secure mission fabric necessary for efficient and effective operations.
