When we designed Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), we listened to our customers. They asked us to create an open architecture. They wanted us to help create joint solutions with a broad ecosystem of partners (and yes, some competitors).
Today, ACI has over 46 partners at varying stages of integration, covering areas of storage, compute, security, cloud automation and more.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of participating in the SAP TechEd keynote with Steve Lucas. We announced an integrated solution between Cisco, SAP and Vnomic – an SAP startup: a complete policy-driven automation of SAP’s next generation Big Data and Analytics solution.
Why is this such a big deal? Fundamental shifts toward Web 2.0 applications, Big Data, Cloud and IOT are unleashing new data, engagement and insights across many industries. In order to get faster business decisions from this vast amount of data, enterprises need to drive agility, security and governance across their IT environments.
Project Benjamin is a policy driven reference architecture and solutions center. Benjamin automates HANA Vora and SAP applications on a jointly certified Petabyte-scale HANA cluster.
Our goal was to make SAP Big Data solutions incredibly simple to deploy, secure, govern and audit. And it is. This innovation enables large SAP landscapes for BW on HANA, S4/HANA and HANA Vora to be deployed in hours and governed continuously.
What we didn’t get a chance to highlight yesterday are the results of our co-innovation. With this ACI integration, we deliver a joint solution today at Petabyte scale – analytics running in real-time. We bring deployment time down from months to days and hours. And we are driving a high level of automation to the digital enterprise.
With Benjamin, customers can test their data environment on jointly certified and supported ACI and UCS Integrated Infrastructure for on-premise and or cloud deployments.
Application policy at the heart
The network is the best place to put policy because it touches everything. It never lies. And ACI is the magic that seamlessly integrates all the way to the application layer.
Application policy runs through the heart of Project Benjamin. SAP application landscapes today contain a variety of compliance and user policies. Together, Cisco ACI and Vnomic automatically capture and implement these policies throughout a customer’s infrastructure, including defining the network topology, connecting compute and storage endpoints, configuring L4-7 services and delivering dynamic enforcement as policies change. Cisco, SAP and the Big-Data Revolution
SAP just announced the release of SAP HANA Vora. SAP HANA Vora is an in-memory query engine that plugs into the Apache Spark execution framework to provide enriched interactive analytics on Hadoop.
Cisco, provider of UCS Integrated Infrastructure for Big Data, is working with SAP to achieve the following:
- Process Big Data simply and cost-effectively for real-time business applications and analytics
- Provide enterprise-class drill-down insight into raw data
- Blend incoming data from customers, partners, and smart devices
- Combine business data with external data sources to make better decisions through greater context
SAP HANA Vora running on Cisco UCS consists of the following
- In-memory query engine running on Spark execution framework on the Cisco UCS platform
- Compiled queries for accelerated processing across Hadoop nodes on the Cisco UCS platform
- Enhanced Spark SQL semantic with hierarchies for analytical processing
- Enhanced adaptor for Spark and the SAP HANA database for faster query interactivity
- Unified administration across Hadoop distributions and SAP HANA
What does this mean for customers who plan to run SAP HANA Vora on the Cisco UCS platform?
- Enable more precise decisions through greater contextual awareness
- Democratize access for data scientists to facilitate new discoveries
- Simplify Big Data ownership through unified administration across multiple tiers
Structured and unstructured data, all part of the Internet of Things, is created each day at an accelerated rate and those companies that are able to take advantage of that data in a business environment, will outpace their competitors in the business world and provide those products in a manner that will be tailored to their customers’ demands.
In utilizing SAP HANA Vora on the Cisco UCS platform, not only will the customer demands be met, but it will be delivered via ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure) in an automated, cost-effective, policy-driven way, which can lead to lowering the total cost of ownership of a data center, both from a hardware and software perspective, and decreasing the time an employee spends deploying and managing a critical data center.
Look for more information about SAP HANA Vora on the Cisco Web Site and plan to visit the Cisco booth at SAP TechEd in Las Vegas and Barcelona this Fall.

Following the Hortonworks Blog, we are lucky to have James Gold from SAP as next blogger in the Why I love Big Data guest partner series. James explains how customers experience is greatly improved via predictive maintenance in a connected factory.
James Gold, Director, Global Technology Partner Marketing, SAP SE
Jim is an enterprise software veteran who’s held a number of senior marketing and business development positions at large, mid-size and startup technology companies. In his current position as Director of Global Technology Partner Marketing for SAP, he’s responsible for co-marketing, business development and co-innovation of key SAP strategic alliances, including Cisco Systems, Inc. Previously, he held product marketing positions in support of SAP HANA Cloud Platform and SAP virtualization technologies.
Prior to SAP, Jim worked in a variety of senior roles in partner and product marketing, business development and channel enablement. He began his software career at IBM, and has worked at Intuit, LivePerson and Lithium Technologies, among others.Jim graduated cum laude from the University of Vermont, and has done graduate work in business and political science.
If you’ve spent much of your career in customer facing roles as I have, you know it from experience: whatever your business, there’s simply no substitute for a true customer advocate. It’s been said more than once that “the most important person selling what you’re offering is…your customer.” And with no shortage of vehicles to share product and service experiences, we all know that your customer’s opinion — positive or negative — can impact business like never before.
So what does this have to do with Big Data, Analytics, and Internet of Everything (IoE) – along with SAP, Hortonworks and Cisco? I hope you’ll stop by World of Solutions (1733) Connected Factory at Cisco Live to find out for yourself! You’ll see a powerful example of a Predictive Maintenance application that combines real-time and historical data about asset performance and repair to proactively prevent disruptions, increase manufacturing yield, reduce costs – and ultimately improve customer service.
