Last month, Cisco announced ISR-AX. This new application delivery platform provides granular application visibility, control and optimization, integrated in a single box.  ISR-AX helps customers enhance end-user productivity, lower WAN bandwidth costs and simplify IT.

In discussing this new role of the router, application performance management becomes a key component.  ISR-AX and AVC (Application Visibility and Control) offers an open platform where we share the network intelligence gathered by Cisco routers with third party tools.  CA Technologies and Cisco have been working together towards supporting our mutual customers’ needs for Application and Network Performance Management (APM and NPM) and ensure that users get the highest quality of application experience from anywhere. It has been a couple of weeks since its launch and we are seeing lots of interest in the Cisco ISR-AX!  I have been hearing from customers, partners and folks  worldwide about how they are using the new ISR-AX platforms now and get a router, VPN, firewall, intrusion prevention, cloud/web security, AVC (NBAR2, QoS, NetFlow, Media Monitoring, PfR) and WAN optimization (WAAS) all in one box for less than the cost of just an alternative WAN Optimization appliance.  For WAN optimization with WAAS that is less than $1 per WAN optimized connection with ISR-AX!

I have been working for Cisco for over 15 years, much of that time as a Consulting Engineer for Routing and Switching. 

I understand strengths and weakness of routing, the value of a good hierarchical design…. But what’s worse than having an end-user having problems with one of his business application and being unable to provide an answer? Yes we have traceroute, ping and other fancy networking tools but nowadays we have to deal with applications and user experience. We have to move forward and take into account the performance of an application rather than just forwarding packets based on static cost metrics. It’s not just about connectivity anymore.

Therefore I’ve moved to the Application Visibility and Control (AVC) group in Engineering. It’s like jumping from standard L3 to advanced L4-L7 kind of routing.
