Cisco Quad and EMC Documentum Team Up to Make Content Social

This morning Cisco and EMC are announcing that they are teaming up to offer a Social Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise.

By combining Cisco Quad, our social software platform, with EMC’s Documentum Enterprise Content Management Platform (ECM), we’re enabling new ways to connect people, communities, and information on a policy-driven architecture that ensures compliance and security across the enterprise. With this announcement, both companies will deliver more comprehensive and expansive integration capabilities into the core of their products.

Today’s news will result in an improved experience for the end user (consistent, integrated and customizable), for IT (through their ability to deliver rich, social collaboration while, at the same time, protecting their organizations from associated risk) and for the business (driving productivity, growth and innovation through faster and more effective decision-making

The first release from this partnership will be available in the third quarter of 2011, and will enable existing ECM suite customers to collaborate on their content using social collaboration capabilities in Quad.

If you are interested in learning more, please read on and also check out the following video featuring myself and Jeetu Patel, CSO and CMO with the Information Intelligence Group of EMC.

Climber at Mt Everest Talks with WebEx from Base Camp

Note: the live event with Brian Dickinson was canceled due to logistical difficulties. We were able to talk to him late last week and you can hear the recording here. Below is a quick account of what happened (the links below click through to the relevant background on Brian’s blog).

Shortly after learning Brian was going to climb Mt Everest, I sat down and plowed through Jon Krakauer’s book, Into Thin Air. I had to know what Brian was up against. It scared the crap out of me. This was going to be incredibly dangerous. I gained an even deeper respect for his wife, JoAnna.

Since then, I have been slightly addicted to Brian’s progress -- the ups and downs, his scare with HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) and I was anxiously waiting Read More »

What’s Up Doc? Baby Carrots: Business Transformation with Bite!

The day has finally come. I am writing about baby carrots. In a business context. My mom will never believe it.

But it’s really a great story that continues to unfold thanks to the brilliant business transformation that happened in the carrot farms of central California in the 1990s. Cisco’s Inder Sidhu summarizes the business challenge facing Mike Yurosek, then a carrot farmer in Bakersfield (read Inder’s blog on Forbes.com here):

“…Yurosek thought the traditional way of farming carrots was wrong. What good is producing so many carrots if the majority aren’t relevant to the grocers who sell them or the consumers who buy them?, he wondered. Frustrated, Yurosek–who prided himself on a tendency to “think outside the carrot patch”–decided one day in 1986 to try something new.”
