Collaboration

At Citrix Synergy 2012, I was invited to participate in a panel discussion, “Beyond BYOD to Work Anywhere with Virtual Workspaces”.  Fellow panelists included Simon Bramfitt, Principal Analyst at Entelechy Associates, and Jeroen Van De Kam, CTO at Login Consultants.

Two key themes came up repeatedly:  the need to keep BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in perspective and the role of the business and the users.

BYOD should be an element of a broader corporate IT strategy that supports and enables business goals and objectives. BYOD is neither the purpose nor the end goal, but is about providing the users with the tools they need to make it easier to do work and collaborate. In that same vein, desktop virtualization — which is another key IT initiative many companies are investing in to support BYOD — must also be part of that comprehensive strategy.  To do this, IT must have a dialogue with the business leaders on what they mutually want to achieve and how they want to transform the way they work and interact with customers to achieve their respective business goals.

I explored these thoughts in greater detail in a video interview following the panel discussion:

I encourage you to explore how virtual workspaces can help you create your “beyond BYOD” strategy by visiting www.cisco.com/go/vxi.

Great post and video. As one of Cisco partners, Touchbase deals with BYOD strategy and implementation on a regular basis. However, like the post and video explains, BYOD should be an element of a broader corporate IT strategy that supports and enables your customer’s goals and objectives. BYOD may not always fit. Brian, you sum up the point nicely when you say, “Tailor your strategies to meet the needs of those communities. Make them successful and they will make you successful.” Great perspective.
