Cyta Hellas, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Telecommunications Organization of Cyprus, is the latest network operator to deploy Cisco’s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport solution for a new high-speed backbone. Cyta is the most recent service provider to be licensed in Greece, which is part of the mother company’s effort to expand to new markets. In almost six years, Cyta has achieved nearly 17% market share and is still growing, despite challenging economic conditions. Today, the company operates a network of over 5,000 km one of the largest privately owned fiber optic networks in Greece.
Cyta Hellas started out focusing on voice telephony and the broadband market, both for residential and business customers in a service bundle they brand as “2play”. In fact, they were actually the first company in Greece to deploy high-speed VDSL Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) at rates up to 50Mbps, leveraging the latest router and VDSL access technologies to make those speeds available.
In July 2014, Cyta Hellas has entered the full Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) market, as the first and only full MVNO operator in Greece. As a result of this development, Cyta Hellas, is the only one among all operators in the country that enables the provisioning of 4play services (Fixed, Mobile, Internet, Internet Protocol Televsion (IPTV)) from a single provider.
The enhanced DWDM network will provide them the foundation to better support both advanced services such as video, high speed Ethernet and other cloud-based collaboration, as well as higher capacity wholesale services.
One of the benefits of choosing the Cisco DWDM solution, based on Cisco’s coherent nLight technology, is that it’s has the flexibility to easily grow from 10 Gbps wavelengths to 100 Gbps wavelengths using the same fiber. This is critical, given the growth of the Internet yet constrained capital budgets at network operators. No one can afford to rip up and replace their fiber infrastructure, yet with the Cisco solution we provide an easy growth path when and where needed.
Another advantage of the Cisco solution is the advanced ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer) and simplified provisioning capabilities. By using highly flexible ROADMs, Cyta’s network engineers can easily provide capacity as needed between nodes without having to re-engineer the network. This ensures that bandwidth is available when and where needed, simplifying network operations and helping Cyta deliver services more quickly.
The DWDM project was implemented by Logicom Solutions, which is a member of Logicom Group and operates in Greece since 2009. Logicom Solutions is a leading provider for total IT Solutions, offering products, solutions and ICT services to large Enterprise, Service Provider and Public Sector customers.
