What a great time to be in London this week, the weather was great with blue skies and warm weather. But the main reason this week to be in London was to attend the annual Global Telecoms Business Summit and Innovations Awards, and what a great industry event it was. During the event there were lots of customer interactions, industry discussions & best practices, and of course the Innovation Awards.

Axiata 1

The Global Telecom Business Summit and Innovation Awards is an annual event that celebrates innovative solutions created by telecom vendors together with operators to make a difference to the world. Cisco and XL Axiata won the award for Network Infrastructure Innovation for “Transforming Mobile Service Delivery in Indonesia” where XL Axiata leveraged Cisco’s Industry Leading Virtualized Packet Core Solution to dynamically scale to support the dynamic Indonesia Mobile Data Growth.

What is the problem that we identified? Network flexibility, cost control, and future proofing the network are all critical areas when serving more than 60 million subscribers. XL Axiata is one of Indonesia’s leading cellular service providers, offering many types of telecommunication products and services such as voice, SMS, data, and other value-added mobile telecommunication services with an extensive network around the country.

The Solution: Virtualized Mobile Platform

Axiata 2

XL Axiata needed to transform their mobile service delivery platform, going from the traditional siloed approach to a more scalable, dynamic network architecture. They deployed Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) servers as a dynamic compute platform to deploy Cisco Virtualized Packet Core (VPC) and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). The Cisco VPC is the industry’s most complete, fully virtualized evolved packet core that scales up and down to support a full range of mobile networks, including new markets such as M2M, mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), and Premium Mobile Broadband Networks. Cisco VPC combines all packet core services—for 4G, 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, and small cell networks—into a single solution. It provides those network functions as virtualized services, and enables customers to scale capacity and introduce new services much faster and more cost-effectively.

The Results:

XL Axiata has been able to scale their services automatically to adjust to the shifting traffic patterns of mobile data. It has allowed them to go to market much faster than in the traditional network infrastructure, address new markets such as the Internet Of Things, and create new network components to adjust to network conditions.
