Like most kids, my children love to call their grandparents and tell them about what is happening at school. We are lucky that we have a great home POTS voice service through our local telephone company. My kids are growing up quickly, and I anticipate that they will want to eventually call from whatever device is in their hands. That could be my cell phone or the regular ‘land line’ home phone. Or what if my son wants to use my Kindle or an iPod touch to make the call? These devices are typically not used for voice calls, only for data applications.   Many of them only have Wi-Fi, and right now cannot make voice over Wi-Fi calls without a number of new developments on the device.

The great news is that there are many developments in the Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) space to get us closer to that vision. Some of those new developments are being shown this week at Mobile World Congress. Continue reading “Voice Calls from Any Mobile Device – It’s Happening Now”

Many of you may have missed the recent presence of Cisco at DistribuTECH in San Diego last month, so that blog is summarized here and a link to the live blog is given at the end of this summary:

At DistribuTECH, Cisco had the pleasure of engaging with attendees, demonstrating how utilities the world over have worked with Cisco and our partners to reduce costs and deliver more services on a single, intelligent and secure platform. The IT model we shared is one that brings innovation to the Operational Technology (OT) environment, integrating information, data, people and processes – the building blocks for the Internet of Everything.

In the included video Bit Stew went on to talk about how they’re taking their software, embedding it in Cisco routers, putting it inside substations, allowing that intelligence and that automation to happen in real time, right at the edge of the network, yet tie back into cloud based systems.  This technology is brought to life at major utilities such as BC Hydro, a Canadian electric utility in the province of British Columbia, which first introduced smart meters in 2011. Find out more by reading the whole blog below.

I love sports—playing, watching, you name it. But the sports experience has changed so much over the past few years, in new and exciting ways, which makes being a fan or being a player more dynamic – and way more fun.

Growing up playing basketball, we’d play the game, feed off our fans’ energy and cheers, celebrate when we won, and then challenge the next team!

But today, fans are tweeting messages to their favorite players and players are wearing sensors to track their performance—it’s a whole new ballgame. With the transitions we’ve seen in mobile, cloud and the Internet of Everything (IoE), so much has changed—and will continue to change—how we engage with our favorite teams.

I’d even venture to say that the fan-player relationship is now personal. You used to be able to only enjoy a game at the stadium where it was being played, or by listening to the radio or watching TV. You certainly couldn’t share your thoughts on the game with the players playing, except by screaming at them – or the TV.

Innovations in streaming video, live broadcasting and social media, have made today’s experience radically different. Wi-Fi-enabled sports arenas, combined with the huge expansion in mobile capabilities, mean that fans can watch the game live, watch on TV, or via an app on their smart device. Anyone out there like watching the hoop cam during a game?

Overview

Over the last several months Talos researchers have been monitoring a massive exploit kit campaign that is utilizing hijacked registrant accounts to create large amounts of subdomains for both initial redirection and exploitation. This campaign has been largely attributed to Angler Exploit Kit with fileless exploits serving various malicious payloads.

The use of hijacked accounts lead to a larger research project into the use of hijacked registrant accounts. During this research the earliest examples were found from a 2011 campaign with sporadic usage until December 2014. Since December 2014 more than 75% of the subdomain activity has occurred indicating a major shift in approach. This behavior has been covered before which discussed some of the older campaigns as well as the hosting indicators (ASN) of the groups making use of the subdomains.

In recent years, organic reach on Facebook has seen a strong decline. Reach is defined as the number of people who have seen your post. On your personal Facebook, you aren’t going to see this number, but for anyone running a Facebook page – this is an important number.

The challenge for social media marketing started a few years ago when Facebook began suppressing the reach of posts from Pages. Organic reach started to decline as early as 3 years ago. In 2012 = between 15-20% of people who had “liked” your Page saw organic posts. In 2013 that number dropped to ~10% and by 2014 it dropped to 1-3%.

This left many social media marketing teams with no choice but to “pay to play”. Facebook started to offer a “Boost Post” option at the same time it started to suppress organic reach. Boosting a post raises the percentage of people who have liked your page who get to see your post in their News Feed.

Confidence is an important ingredient in selling cloud services.  In Deliver Cloud Services Meeting the Highest Standard, cloud provider Cirrity shares how fragile customer confidence can be.

Reliability is the foundation for establishing and maintaining a customer’s confidence and trust.  Reliability begins with the architecture of services and builds upon how services are put deployed.  This is one of the reasons why Cisco partners are required to complete a third-party audit to offer Cisco Powered services.  Cisco Powered sets the highest standard for cloud services, and this rigorous audit requires providers to verify that they can deliver as promised.  Cisco Powered also enables organizations to quickly differentiate the value of our partners’ cloud services from the many commodity-based services available.
