Cisco and SAP Collaborate to Offer a New Shopping Experience at Retailers

When was the last time you sifted through the pile of coupons and special offers that fill your mailbox each day? Extreme “couponers” aside, most of us rely more on the daily coupons we receive via email from online sites, rather than the thousands that end up in our recycling bin each month.

Today, technology has influenced the purchase decision, and buyers are bringing their own technology – smartphones and mobile devices – on their shopping excursions. In a world where 74% of smartphone owners use their mobile phones to get real-time location-based information, retailers need to harness the power of the loyal customers and market to those consumers in real-time.

Cisco’s partnership with SAP for a new Retail Mobility Solution offers a unique business-to-consumer shopping experience that brings real-time and location-based deals to shoppers and allows businesses to improve customer service and more accurately track ROI. Supporting the solution, Cisco’s Context Aware Services, Cisco’s Mobility Services Engine (MSE) and Cisco Prime Network Management with SAP’s Precision Retail Application (Apollo), optimize the in-store experience for consumers and retail decision makers. This mobility retail solution leverages the indoor-location and analytic capabilities of the Cisco Connected Mobile Experience platform to drive a premium consumer experience, allowing shoppers to make quick decisions and receive instant discounts on their mobile devices to put towards their purchases.

SAP TechEd Madrid Wrap-Up

SAP announces support for Virtualized SAP HANA for non-productive platforms at SAP Sapphire/TechEd Madrid

On the final day of TechEd in Madrid, SAP announced that they will be supporting virtualization for Non-Productive SAP HANA systems. No other details were given surrounding this announcement, but this is a significant departure from their previous position as it related to SAP HANA. This should be good news for Cisco given that the Cisco UCS server platform was built from the ground up to host applications in a virtualized manner. As we work with VCE, EMC, and NetApp this will only enhance our position in the SAP HANA space

Cisco had an excellent presence at the event. There were almost 700 visitors to our booth as we had on display, FlexPod from NetApp, VBlock from VCE and IT Process Automation. In addition we had as many visitors to the SAP HANA Test Drive area where Cisco had the C460 SAP HANA certified platform.

One area that got quite a bit of attention was the SAP Precision Retail mobility application on the Cisco platform. I attended two sessions that were well attended by attendees at the conference. There were at least 40 to 50 attendees at each session. In addition, the application was on display in the SAP Mobility area. Cisco is the only hardware vendor that SAP has worked with on this particular application and will be actively selling this application as part of their portfolio.

Michael Missbach, who manages Cisco’s SAP competency center in Walldorf Germany, was the leader in two Microforums on Tuesday and third speaking session on Wednesday. The first was SAP on the Cloud and the second was a Microforum with TUI Travel’s (HotelBeds) CIO Mr. Garcia. Mr. Garcia was able to discuss his installation of SAP on Cisco UCS as well as his use of SAP HANA on the Certified Cisco UCS server platform and how this architecture design has saved him approximately 150,000 Euros a year.

Cisco’s Day One for SAP Sapphire/TechEd Madrid

Cisco’s Day One for SAP Sapphire/TechEd Madrid

Day one was a successful day for Cisco at SAP TechEd Madrid. Our booth was full most of the day with customers looking and discussing the solutions in our booth.

We had a FlexPod and VBlock rack in our both which attracted quite a lot of attention. We were able to explain both of these solutions to those who came by the booth. We also spent quite a bit of time talking about ITPA and how that solution enhances Cisco’s UCS server platform for SAP HANA and how this differentiates Cisco from the remaining certified hardware vendors for SAP HANA.

Cisco UCS is also represented in the SAP HANA Test drive area, where SAP is demonstrating application development on a Cisco UCS C460 platform for SAP HANA.

The first was SAP on the Cloud and the second was a Microforum with TUI Travel’s (HotelBeds) CIO Mr. Garcia. There were also meetings with Portugal Telecom, Almaviva, and Korea Telecom during the day, all of which were very productive

Besides the customer meetings, there were numerous meetings with different partners during the day

Cisco hosted the Vblock party in our booth late in the day, which attracted a big crowd culminating with the entire crowd chanting “Cisco sells Servers” which could be heard through the exhibit hall.

Overall we had over 200 visitors to our booth.

Overall, a very successful day for Cisco

Cisco Validated Designs for Cloud – Part 3 – Flexpod

November 9, 2012 at 4:00 am PST

Over the past two weeks, Tom Nallen introduced the concept and benefits of the Cisco Validated Design , then Laszlo Bojtos,  illustrated this concept with the Cloud Service Assurance for Virtualized Multi-Services Data Center 2.2 Cisco Validated Design, with a specific emphasis on the integration with Cisco Intelligent Automation for Cloud .

This week I talked with John Kennedy, a Cisco engineer who put a lot of energy on the FlexPod CVDs.

“So John, what is FlexPod ?
FlexPod is the result of collaboration between NetApp© and Cisco to create a cost-effective, scalable solution for cloud applications as well as standard virtualization support.  The FlexPod(t), a pre-defined, pre-tested solution, includes the compute, networking, and storage customers need in a validated (as in CVD) package. But unlike other validated solutions, FlexPod can be scaled up or out, not just one or the other.

What need does FlexPod address ?
It’s probably been a while since you had to source a motherboard. Many of us have done this in the past, in order to get desktop computer system that met our needs. Pre-configured systems were limited in their abilities, and custom design was beneficial.

But choices of personal computer systems have increased, and most folks don’t need to customize anymore, preferring to buy an entire computer system that’s been tested and designed to meet their needs. On the other hand, customers want to be able to expand the system they have to keep up with new technology, or to add capabilities.

Customers need to support multiple types of applications and have multiple purposes for their infrastructure, and the Cisco Validated Designs (CVDs) for FlexPod reflect that need. The architectures have been validated by engineers from both companies to ensure performance and stability.
But that’s just the beginning. The Cisco Validated Design documents include multiple configurations with multiple types of application and operating systems  Read More »
