At Cisco, we take very seriously our ability to anticipate and catch market transitions. A few years ago, we saw a market transition that would affect our Service Provider customers in the area of Mobility. With 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi deployments rising, the world was clearly shifting from Coverage, Capacity to Services… and the importance of customer experience rising amongst operators worldwide. As a result, we set in motion a new strategy for our Service Provider Mobility Group (SPMG). The key to our strategy was to develop an architecture that would enable Service Providers to offer a differentiated experience to their customers.
Our Mobility CTO Paul Mankiewich refers to the new mobility operator requirements as “the Grand Challenge.” The inflection point is here. Not only do our key SP customers recognize it, but our competitors are also seeing the tremendous business opportunity represented by the “Grand Challenge,” especially as it relates to emerging Monetization use cases that are propelling the market’s rapid growth.

If the start of a New Year is the best time to create new resolutions, then we’re defining our resolution for 2013 to be unity in video experiences. Now that our SP and media customers have deployed services to tablets and IP devices in addition to TVs, the next step is to unify and innovate the video experiences delivered across all screens. Today at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, Cisco introduced Videoscape Unity, the new and expanded Videoscape platform designed to do just this – unify and innovate video experiences. .(We hosted a press conference, carried live across the Internet. If you missed it, a replay is available after 3 p.m. PST by clicking here.) We demonstrated the types of experiences Videoscape Unity can deliver in service provider environments today, and provided a future-looking view of what we are doing to make these even more immersive and engaging.
As an added feature, Marthin De Beer, senior vice president of Cisco’s Video and Collaboration Group, hosted a panel of our customers to talk about and share their visions for “The Future of TV: Above and Beyond TV Everywhere.” Panelists included:
- Len Barlik, executive vice president, chief product officer, Cox Communications
- Bill Bradford, senior vice president, Digital Media, Fox Broadcasting
- Joe Inzerillo, senior vice president, Multimedia and Distribution, Major League Baseball Advanced Media
- Balan Nair, executive vice president, chief technology officer, Liberty Global
- Andrew Olson, director of product planning and design, BSkyB
So what is Videoscape Unity exactly? Read More »

Jon Ashley, the editor of the newish publication, Cisco Services Dynamics recently asked me if I’d be interested in providing an article on Cloud Computing. I gladly agreed and after a quick briefing from Jon was off and typing. While none of this is all that unusual, it turns out that Cisco Services Dynamics is a different sort of publication.
The first thing that sets Dynamics apart is the emphasis placed on having the articles be informative, concise and, focused on Services. Since I was planning a piece on Cloud it seemed this would be a bit of a “no brainer”. However, I found my first draft lacking in a couple of areas. For starters I was not all that concise; I was frankly a bit long winded. Secondly I missed the mark on being informative. Seems I, like many marketers, confused informative with selling. However with a bit of coaching from Jon I was able to re-work my piece and submit it for publication.
Recently I received an email letting me know Cisco Services Dynamics Edition 3 was officially available; and thanking me for my contribution. This is where another nice feature of the publication came to light. You can choose to receive the publication in a printed format, on-line, or both. I choose the on-line version and found that it takes advantage of its on-line format and provides much more than a pleasing interface that allows you to “turn the pages”, share via Twitter and LinkedIn, and integrated video and expanding text boxes.
