TPC-H Benchmark Establishes Cisco UCS C240 as the Fastest Two-socket Server for Microsoft SQL Server 2014

Cisco (UCS®) continues its tradition of performance and price/performance leadership with the announcement of a world-record TPC-H benchmark at the 1000GB Scale Factor running Microsoft SQL Server 2014. On august 20th 2014, the Cisco UCS® C240 M3 Rack Server delivered the Best Two-Socket Server Performance and Best Overall Price/Performance on the TPC-H Benchmark at the 1000GB Scale Factor.  

The Cisco UCS® C240 M3 Rack Server captured the number-one spot for overall price/performance on the TPC-H benchmark at the 1000GB scale factor with a price/performance ratio of $0.73 USD per QphH@1000 GB and demonstrated 304,362 queries per hour (QphH@1000GB), making it the fastest two-socket server running Microsoft SQL Server 2014.

The TPC-H benchmark evaluates a composite performance metric (QphH@size) and a price/performance metric ($/QphH@size) that measure the performance of various decision support systems by running sets of queries against a standard database under controlled conditions. As tested, the benchmark configuration consisted of a Cisco UCS® C240 M3 Rack Server equipped with 768 GB of memory and two 2 Intel Xeon E5-2690 v2 processors. The system ran Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition. Check out the Performance Brief for additional information on the benchmark configuration. Some of the key highlights of Cisco’s TPC-H Benchmark results are:

Best Price/Performance: The Cisco UCS® C240 M3 Rack Server captured the number-one price/performance spot on the TPC-H benchmark at the 1000-B scale factor with a price/performance ratio of $0.73 USD per QphH@1000GB. This result beats 8-socket HP ProLiant DL980 G7 running Microsoft SQL Server at 219,887 QphH and $ 1.86 USD/QphH@1000GB by 60 percent.

This result joins the more than 90 previous world-record performance results set by Cisco UCS since it was announced five years ago. Cisco UCS Claims Six New World Record Benchmark Results with the Intel Xeon Processor E7 v2 Family

On February 18th, 2014 Cisco announced support for the Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 v2 product family on the Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS®). Cisco has designed three new servers based on these new Intel processors: the Cisco UCS B460 M4, UCS B260 M4, and UCS C460 M4 servers. On the same day as the Intel announcement, Cisco captured six world records on industry benchmarks on Cisco UCS to highlight the way in which Cisco UCS can accelerate performance across the data center. Cisco UCS Delivers a World-Record VMware® VMmark™ 2.5 Benchmark Result

Cisco continues its cloud computing performance leadership with the announcement of VMware® VMmark™ 2.5 benchmark result published on May 9th 2013. The Cisco UCS C240 M3 Rack Server’s score of 12.00@10 tiles on the VMware VMmark 2.5 benchmark represents the best cloud computing performance of any 2-socket server in a 2-node configuration as measured by the VMware VMmark 2.5 benchmark

The VMware VMmark 2.5 benchmark uses a tiled design that incorporates six real-world workloads to calculate a virtualization score. Then it includes VMware vMotion, Storage vMotion, and virtual machine provisioning times to calculate an infrastructure score. The combination of these scores is the total benchmark score. 

The system used to achieve this performance included the Cisco UCS C240 M3 Rack Server powered by Intel® Xeon® processors and an industry-leading approach to storage: a Cisco UCS server-based Fusion‑io ION Data Accelerator solution that turns the server into a storage system. The Fusion-io ION Data Accelerator turns Cisco UCS servers equipped with Fusion-io ioMemory into highly available, transparently scalable, shared storage appliances.

Cisco UCS Delivers Industry-Leading SPECjbb2013 Results

On April 17th, 2013 Cisco announced SPECjbb2013 results with the Cisco UCS C220 M3 Rack Server delivering top SPECjbb2013 MultiJVM 2-socket x 86 performances.

Cisco’s results on the SPECjbb®2013 benchmark—41,954 maximum Java operations (max-jOPS) and 16,545 critical Java operations (critical-jOPS)— demonstrate that the Cisco UCS® C220 M3 Rack Server and Oracle Java Standard Edition (SE) 7u11 can provide an optimized platform for Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) and deliver accelerated response to throughput-intensive Java applications.

Exercising new Java SE 7 features, the SPECjbb2013 benchmark stresses the CPU processing, memory speed, and chip set performance capabilities of the underlying platform. The result consists of two metrics: the full capacity throughput (max-jOPS) and the critical throughput (critical-jOPS) under service-level agreements (SLAs), ranging from 10 to 500 milliseconds (ms) from request issuance to receipt of a response indicating operation completion.

 To compete in the SPECjbb2013 MultiJVM category, the tested configuration consisted of a controller and two groups each consisting of a transaction injector and back-end, all running across multiple JVM instances within a single operating system image. The JVM instances ran on a Cisco UCS C220 M3 Rack Server. Two 2.90-GHz, 8-core Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2690 CPUs powered the Cisco UCS C220 M3 server running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 operating system and Java HotSpot™ 64-Bit Server Virtual Machine Version 1.7.0_11. The Cisco UCS C220 M3 Rack Server and Oracle Java SE 7u11 delivered fast response times and high transaction throughput on the SPECjbb2013 benchmark. The system supported 41,954 max‑jOPS and 16,545 critical-jOPS,  representing  the best critical-jOPS 2-socket x86 result in the MultiJVM category

Cisco UCS Delivers the best 2-socket Virtualized SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark result in a Linux environment

On March 19th, 2013 Cisco announced the best 2-socket virtualized SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark result in a Linux environment with the Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS®) delivering high scalability and low latency in virtualized SAP Business Suite deployments.

Cisco’s benchmark result for the Cisco UCS B200 M3 Blade Server show support for up to 5530 concurrent users and a SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) score of 30,270 derived from the processing of 605,330 order line items per hour and 1,816,000 dialog steps per hour. This result demonstrates that a Cisco UCS B200 M3 Blade Server configured with a LSI 400-GB SLC WarpDrive can deliver high scalability and low latency in virtualized SAP Business Suite deployments.

The tested configuration consisted of a Cisco UCS chassis equipped with one Cisco UCS B200 M3 Blade Server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.4 on KVM. The server was configured with two 2.90-GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon processor E5-2690 CPUs and 256 GB of 1600-MHz memory. The blade server ran both the SAP Business Suite application software and the 64-bit Sybase ASE 15.7 in a single virtual machine. SAP Enhancement Package 5 for SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) 6.0 was used in this scenario. The Cisco UCS B200 M3 Blade Server recorded the best two-way virtualized SAP SD Benchmark result on SAP Enhancement Package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0 and Sybase ASE 15.7. In the test, 5530 SAP SD Benchmark users were supported while a consistent application response of less than one second was maintained.

Many business organizations currently struggle with the cost of maintaining RISC processor–based servers running proprietary operating systems and third-party database management systems.
