Don’t just know technology, understand the business, the compliance structures, what the users really need, do and use, and the short and long term vision of the leaders of the business and each department. Before starting projects make sure to have discussions with not only department heads but line managers. Email and electronic communication is great but never forget that getting up and walking over and having a face to face discussion makes a huge difference and gives a face to a department that most users don’t understand.

Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Just because something is done one way, doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way to do it. Also challenge your partners and customers to think differently. Lastly if you are going to fail at something, fail fast and learn from it!
