The theme of APIdays Paris 2022 is “APIs the next 10 years: Software, Society, Sovereignty, Sustainability”.  This theme of the next 10 years is one that I personally connect with. I can’t help but reflect on my own API journey from the past to where I am today and how excited I am for what the next 10 years will bring. We – Cisco Developer Relations  – are a proud sponsor of APIdays Paris for a reason – we care and are invested in the future of APIs!

Looking Back

From where I started as a NeXT developer to building the software of Kosmos Digital Services for Education and running SaaS operations that served over 3 million users, I’ve seen APIs evolve into the strategic asset they can represent. I’ve also witnessed how much attention to details is needed for successful APIs – from actionable design guidelines to accurate reference documentation and empowering developer resources. Since I joined Cisco Developer Relations back in 2016, I have been leading Cisco’s API Experience program which defines internal standards for Cisco APIs in order to drive a great and consistent developer experience.

Cisco ‘s API Experience program is driven from an outside-in perspective, looking first at the benefits for Cisco customers and partners. This journey has been full of learnings and led to multiple announcements recently including “Cisco joins the OpenAPI initiative” and the API-First announcement from Cisco executives.

Current State

This brings me to APIdays!

I hope you can join me December 14th at 2:20PM. In the “12 Facets of the OpenAPI Specification” talk I will share how Cisco Engineering leverages the OpenAPI specifications to drive API quality and state-of-the-art developer experience. I’ll describe OpenAPI best practices, tools, and processes built internally and open sourced. You’ll hear about best practices and lessons learned when standardizing on the OpenAPI specifications for organizations with a massive internal and external facing API portfolio.

API Insights

Along the 3 days of the conference, you can find me in the Cisco Developer Relations booth where we can discuss some of your own success and challenges managing API quality. We will be presenting on-site API Insights (recently open sourced), which facilitates API lifecycle, backward compatibility compliance, and check for reference documentation completeness. Moreover, the Visual Studio Code extension for API Insights helps developer identify API compliance issues early on before the implementation stage. Learn more about API Insights.
