Why You’ll Want LISP Routing – Part 2

So, lets dig into LISP Routing a little more.  If you have not done so, I would recommend you read my first post, since I am not going to review the concepts here. In this post, I am going to break things down into three steps: 1) how packets are forwarded (i.e. the data plane operation), 2) how mapping information is propagated (i.e. control plane operation), and 3) how we internetwork with non-LISP locations.

For starters, lets head into the weeds and take a look at the LISP header format.  In the last post, I mentioned there is some flexibility in how handles IP addressing.  The two examples below show a couple of scenarios: pure IPv4 and a IPv4/IPv6 hybrid:

Recent speculation that Cisco has dissolved its WAAS business is inaccurate. Cisco’s strategy to deliver WAAS pervasively as part of the Cisco WAN infrastructure remains unchanged.

What is the longest running item of Cisco equipment in your data center? Can you beat 13 years?!

Where were you in 1998? Somewhere in one of our customers, a customer booted one of our 3640 routers, and it’s been running ever since without a reboot!

It’s been running since last century! Wow.   It’s been running since around the time my daughter was born, and a good few years before my son was born!  It’s been running longer that some of our competitors have been in existence, and longer than Juniper Networks has been a publicly traded company!

I learned this from an email was passed around my office, that highlighted this remarkable evidence of reliability.  It made me wonder, in your data center, what is your longest running piece of Cisco data center equipment?

And it also reminded me of some of our best practices for network reliability, such as Cisco Smart Services, described in this short VoD:

Frost & Sullivan Movers & Shakers Spotlight Cisco Internet Routing in Space

Earlier this year, Frost & Sullivan presented Cisco’s Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) with its 2012 Global Satellite Transponder Technology Innovation Award for unrivaled accomplishments in the satellite industry.

Cisco IRIS allows space and satellite communications to take full advantage of the value and capability of networking. It extends the benefits of the Internet Protocol (IP) to satellite communications, which have traditionally used proprietary protocols that are difficult to operate within conventional IP-based wireline and wireless networks.
