Bringing Up a New Branch Site the Easy Way with Prime Infrastructure – Part 4

Last week, I went through application assurance with Cisco Prime Infrastructure. Today, as the 4th post of a 5-part blog series, I’ll go into troubleshooting for your branch site with Prime. Again, as a quick recap, here’s my blog series on how to set up networking with Prime for a new branch site.

By now, your new branch site is in perfect condition with Cisco IWAN, wired and wireless Converged Access, as well as application assurance all working as designed. But you need to be prepared to start troubleshooting if something goes wrong. Every user who runs into network issues means productivity loss.  Every minute of a down network causes a significant amount of business loss. Fortunately, Cisco Prime Infrastructure gives you many tools, so you can achieve speedy problem resolution and provide outstanding user experience.

Here’s a Prime troubleshooting success story that a customer told me. It’s a hospital in Dallas, Texas. Keeping their wireless network running was a critical business priority because the medical staff depended on it for communications and patient care. One day, nurses reported intermittent wireless problems in a room. You know, intermittent problems can be hard to troubleshoot. When you are ready to diagnose the problem, the symptoms may or may not exist anymore. Using Prime, their networking team was able to narrow down to a laptop which was always present when the wireless problems occurred. As it turned out, it was doing heavy and unauthorized live streaming which hogged the wireless bandwidth. The owner was immediately notified to stop streaming. Problem solved and case closed. Bringing Up a New Branch Site the Easy Way with Prime Infrastructure – Part 1

If you have a need to set up networking for a new satellite clinic, a bank branch, a retail store or any other branch site, you probably have a lot of pressure to do it fast. After all, branches are where business actions take place. Did you know that branch locations and users consume 70% ~ 90% of a typical company’s business resources? Anything you can do to speed up the deployment and to reduce resource consumption is a big plus for your company’s topline growth and bottom line savings. In this 5-part blog series, I will share with you how to do so easily with Cisco Prime Infrastructure. I’ll use weekly blogs to accomplish it, and here’s the plan.

Let’s get started right away. The first thing for any remote site networking is WAN connectivity. That’s our focus of this blog. Cisco Intelligent WAN (IWAN) solution is an ideal way to go that provides transport flexibility and intelligent path control, plus support for high performance applications and security. But first thing first. We need to think about how to bring a new branch router into production. Read More »

Converged Access Improves Wireless Performance at South Island School, Hong Kong

South Island School in Hong Kong is made up south island school 2of students from around the world, with 1,400 students from over 35 countries. One value that sets the school apart is its commitment to using technology in the classroom. For instance, every student has a laptop that they use to access e-books, watch educational videos, and complete homework assignments. Some exams are even taken digitally.

With wireless devices used daily by every student and faculty member, a stable network connection is almost as important as pencil and paper in classrooms. South Island School’s existing Cisco network had reached end of life, and the school needed to refresh the infrastructure with a network that could meet bandwidth needs for years to come.

“We looked at other vendors, but we were extremely impressed with how the existing Cisco equipment performed over the years,” says Victor Alamo, ICT manager at South Island Schools. “By upgrading to the latest Cisco access points and switches, we’d have an infrastructure that would keep up with our needs.” Read More »

Cloud-Managed IT: The Demystification of Cisco Meraki

I often find when you say “cloud” to a customer they get a reluctant look on their face, and I wonder to myself, ”Is it the mystery about the cloud that concerns them? Maybe the idea of things being sent off to a far away place known as ‘The Cloud’ makes them leery of embracing a technology that can do so much for them.” Let’s be honest. In relation to networking as a whole it is a very new idea.

Often I have to address common misconceptions about our own cloud-managed IT solution, Cisco Meraki. They do see the value of cloud-managed IT such as Instant IT, full business visibility, on-demand scalability and lower IT costs. They just sometimes have the wrong perception of the Cisco Meraki solution! I thought I would take a moment and address some of the more common misconceptions.

Misconception #1: Cisco Meraki is Only Wi-Fi and for Small to Medium or Commercial Customers

False. Although it is true that Meraki started out as delivering cloud-managed Wi-Fi they have grown to bring to market switching, routing, security and even mobile device management, all managed and monitored from the cloud. This means that our customers can deploy a comprehensive infrastructure, threat and mobile management solution. And they can deploy it whether they are managing a few sites or thousands of sites. In the US, Motel 6 supports over 1,100 locations with Meraki. We see customers like Infopark deliver and support wireless, switching and security capabilities for over 600 customers with less than 30 minutes per month put into managing the infrastructure.

Misconception #2: Cisco Meraki is Only for US Customers Read More »
