Cisco Broadens SAN Portfolio for Small to Cloud-Scale Storage Networks

Big Data, Video, and the Internet of Everything (IoE) are driving high demand for data storage in today’s IT environments. Today, Cisco announced new additions to the MDS storage area networking (SAN) portfolio, broadening innovation to meet the needs of small SANs and cloud environments.

How much of a demand for storage are we talking about? A lot. According to IDC’s recently released “Digital Universe of Opportunities: Rich Data and Increasing Value of Internet of Things,” by 2020 data produced will grow by 10 times, from 4.4ZB today to 44ZB (yes, that’s Zetabytes, with a Z); 32 billion Internet of Things devices will be connected to the Internet; 40% of data will be touched by cloud; and enterprises will have liability and responsibility for 85% of all data.

In 2013, Cisco introduced next generation SAN innovations with the new MDS 9710 Multilayer Director and MDS 9250i Multiservice Switch, redefining storage networking with industry leading performance, reliability, and flexibility. Fast forward to today: Cisco broadens the MDS portfolio and extends the innovation to small SANs and private cloud by introducing

  • Two new products (MDS 9148S and MDS 9706),
  • New scalable deployment options( Dynamic FCOE)
  • New management features to automate and provide better end-to-end visibility.

Load Balancing with Dynamic FCoE

It may sound strange to hear me say it, but when I wrote the previous blog post about Dynamic FCoE I thought that it may get a little blip of attention and then filed away as a “oh, that is cool” little factoid about Cisco’s storage portfolio. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so nonchalant, but I confess I was not expecting the number of questions that I (and other speakers at CiscoLive back in May) have been getting about the technology.

Many questions – including some in the comments of the previous blog – have indicated a strong desire to know more, and they have been excellent and well-thought out. I’m going to try to address some of them in a deeper dive blog whenever I can, in the hopes of being able to address some of the concerns and clarify some points.

What is Dynamic FCoE?

The Data Storage Innovations (DSI) conference, the Ethernet Summit conference, EMCWorld, and next week at CiscoLive, I’ve been starting to talk about a new concept in Data Center storage networks called Dynamic FCoE. Understandably, there have been a lot of questions about it, and I wanted to try to get this blog out as quickly as possible.

The TL;DR version: Dynamic FCoE combines the best of Ethernet Fabrics and traditional deterministic storage environments to create massively scalable and highly resilient FC-based fabrics.
