Australia is one of the most sparsely populated countries on Earth. Many of its major cities are separated by expansive stretches of inhospitable desert. Technology, however, is no respector of barriers, natural or man-made and an initiative across Australia from Cisco and Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) proves that point. Yesterday, Cisco and AARNet announced the deployment of one of the longest unregenerated high performance optical networks in the world.
Starting in Adelaide and travelling to Perth (the second most isolated major city in the world) and continuing on to the Murchison Radio-Astronomy Observatory (MRO) in remote Western Australia, the newly deployed network will stretch 3500 km (about 2200 mi). The capacity of the network is scalable to 8Tbps over the 2700 km stretch of fibre from Adelaide to Perth, with 80 channels each providing speeds of 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps). Transmission speeds of 100Gbps have also been consistent during testing on the 800 km stretch of fibre from Perth to the MRO.

As a mobile expert and thought leader, I’m frequently asked about what the next big thing in mobility will be, and my answer often surprises inquirers – mobile’s future is a disappearing act.
When most people think about the future of mobility, they think of larger, possibly flexible mobile screens, thinner and lighter designs, and the incorporation of new, currently unavailable technologies, but the reality isn’t so black-and-white.
In past posts, I’ve explained why mobile devices gained ubiquity – in sum, they’re submissive to us (they’re easy for us to handle and manipulate), and the future of mobility is no exception. Think about it – what could be easier to handle than nothing at all? In time, we’ll begin to see technologies that virtually disappear until we need them, at which point we’ll see them front-and-center, or discretely in our periphery, depending on the optimal viewing location and utility offered. Black Friday. Holiday Travel. Consumers have a more Enjoyable Experience and Businesses are Successful
Thanksgiving is around the corner and the holiday season will be upon us. What will Black Friday look like this year? I know that this is a time when things get more chaotic in my household. As my kids get excited for a break from school, and we all look forward to extended time with family and friends, we must first get through all the holiday preparations and planning. Am I better off ordering gifts for my wife and kids online versus going to the store? Do I want to deal with crowds and getting lost in a retail haze on Black Friday or Christmas Eve? And where will we spend our holiday vacation this year? Will we have access to Wi-Fi wherever we go should I need to check email, or so my kids can watch their favorite shows on Netflix?
This also got me thinking about the questions that keep businesses up at night during the holiday season. These include:
- How can I have a one-to-one engagement with every customer or guest?
- How can I get more customers into my venue?
- How can I avoid showrooming?
- How can I efficiently use my physical assets and human resources to ensure my venue is set up to maximize customer flow and staffing?
- How can I stand out from the crowd and compete with rival brands?
- And advertisements – how can I make them specific to the consumer in my venue rather than generic for many?
Taking these business concerns into account and listening to our customers have prompted Cisco’s Enterprise Networking Group to team up with Facebook to enable businesses to turn their challenges into opportunities. We’ve looked at how consumers can have a more connected experience while in business venues and at the same time how the business can improve the engagement with consumers while they are in the venue. We want to make this year’s holiday season more pleasant for everyone.
