Sky Lakes Medical Center is a not-for-profit, community-owned, internationally accredited acute-care teaching hospital that serves more than 80,000 people in Klamath and Lake counties in south-central Oregon, and Modoc and Siskiyou counties in northern California. The medical center combines small-town charm and neighborliness with big-city medical expertise.
John Gaede, the center’s Director of Information Systems, notes that the mission statement for the hospital’s information services department is to save lives and innovate—in that order. Therefore, in early spring 2020 when the medical center heard of the impact COVID-19 was having in neighboring Washington State, John and his colleagues met with hospital executives to assess their information services preparedness, and coordinate their onsite and telehealth IT response.
