I want to come right out and say thank you to our community for all you do to create a diverse and inclusive DevNet and Cisco Certifications ecosystem. Your thoughts, ideas, openness, and vulnerability are what make our community great! In fact, one of the biggest compliments I’ve ever received was how inclusive our community is. How you welcome everyone from different backgrounds, with different coding abilities. And that’s all due to you, the DevNet community.
Earlier this year during DevNet Day and at Cisco Live, we challenged you all to offer ideas and suggestions on how we can all ensure positive, proactive progress. Progress that accelerates transformation, innovation, and growth for a more inclusive future.
Today, we’re sharing one perspective from DevNet community member, CCIE Advisory Council Member, and cofounder of init6, Derek Winchester, on how we can all embrace diversity and be a champion for each other in our careers and as humans. Our intention in this listening session is to learn from Derek as he shares his experiences as a Black professional, Cisco certified individual, and DevNet community member. His stories are powerful and moving.

Let’s build an even more diverse community together
The developer community is stronger because of the diversity of our ecosystem, and we want to continue building that diversity, together. With Cisco certifications and DevNet, our goal is to help you build new skills and to expand your career and job possibilities. How we move forward – and how you all embrace each other and create a welcoming environment for new and existing DevNet and Cisco certified community members – makes all the difference. Whether you’re new to the Cisco certified and DevNet communities, or you’ve been around for awhile, we’re here to help you on your journey and to power a more inclusive future.

Can’t thank you enough for sharing your stories with us all Derek.
Awesome. Thanks Derek and Susie.
This is powerful, Susie and Derek.
Thank you for addressing the challenges we face based on race and gender.
I would also add that in the world of tech, it is a daily challenge for those of us with business degrees to get respect.
We are smart, and we keep the business running, too.
Will tune in for the next interview!
Thank you Susie and Derek to share a topic of diversity and inclusion that includes black female experience, or lack there of. Derek was right to say that it starts from the earlier years of childhood, introducing both male and female to the world of technology, back as far as preschool, introducing them to activities that will spark that interest. Science, Technology,Engineering, Mathemathics (STEM) or Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programs which is play-based curriculum. I think that we need to rethink how we educate our children and support more teachers and families collectively.
i think its beauty.
You can’t get any deeper inn the south than where i live. You would thing in rural Alabama there would be problems daily. But over my 60 years i cannot recall one issue, we are just not born that way, Anyway good lick with your efforts. jr
