Networking 101: DNS Revealed

June 1, 2012 at 5:49 am PST

Two great new ‘Networking 101’ videos now available.  This series is great for anyone needing a quick refresh or touch up on the basics and these two both focus on DNS.

DNS is key to making the Internet accessible to us humans. It’s how we can connect to techwisetv.com without needing to know anything complex from anywhere in the world. How does it know how to do this? DNS can be a complicated topic but understanding the basics does not have to be.

Taking it a step further, DNSSEC is a suite of IETF specifications designed to guarantee the authenticity of data obtained from the domain name system (DNS). Although not designed for confidentiality of the data, this protocol is a great answer for many of the ills that threaten the simplicity of the Internet. Chief Geek Jimmy Ray Purser arms you with how it works and why deployment is not growing as fast as it should be.

Fundamentals of 802.11ac

May 12, 2012 at 7:44 am PST

We released our latest in the Fundamentals series earlier this month and it is trending quite well.  The 802.11ac standard sounds like a step backwards alphabetically…but it will soon be an incredible step forward forward for WiFi once it is ratified by the IEEE. Watch this latest fundamentals to get comfortable with the truth. 802.11n is still your best bet for 2012 and into 2013 as we continue to partner on the standards process but the future is bright indeed!

Day 3 – That’s a Wrap – Cisco Interop 2012

May 11, 2012 at 2:05 pm PST

Robb and Jimmy Ray on Stage

This was an action packed trip -- I love how a final day is never quite as busy and everyone is so much more relaxed.

Three good stories worth covering, the first two on security!

BYOD Security with Bill McGee

Get more info on the Cisco Security BYOD components, one of which I (humbly) recommend is our ‘Fundamentals of ISE’ (The Cisco Identity Services Engine)

Our second story in security is easily one of my favorites and not just because it involves a lot of friend from Austin.  Cisco’s Security Intelligence Operations…

Fresh Video from the Interop Show Floor in VEGAS!

May 9, 2012 at 5:20 am PST

Chattin with Prashanth at Interop Vegas

Having a lot of fun this year at Interop 2012. We are shooting and editing in a much tighter workflow so that we can publish these things same day and thank gosh!  The stories are numerous and oh so timely.   Follow along as I attempt to recap our first full day on the show floor.

Meet PAM

Jim Frey recently wrote a white paper called Closing the Loop for Effective Network Operations Management and he stopped by to chat about some of the key points made.

As he describes it: Cisco has developed and introduced Prime Assurance Manager with one essential goal in mind – to provide end-to-end operational monitoring visibility, spanning data center to and through the branch, as a means for facilitating efficient operations and proactively protecting network-delivered applications and network availability, network performance, application performance, and end user experience data across both wired and wireless environments, coupled with troubleshooting and reporting features.

Jim is going to be going even deeper with an hour long seminar on May 15.

My First Cloud

Yair Dolev was our guest for the topic of ‘Intelligent Automation for the Cloud’ now in a cool starter Edition!

April 27, 2012 at 9:20 am PST

TechWiseTV Playlist

We updated our little corner of the Cisco YouTube page with some new playlist categories.  Now its easy to find my favorite quick hits -- Networking 101.

Couple of great new videos have been up here recently as @jimmyray_purser rolls ‘em out!

Networking 101: What is an ASIC?

Is a custom application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) really a big deal in networking devices? Jimmy Ray Purser walks us through the difference between custom and full custom ASIC designs. Watch an overview of the steps involved in ASIC design. Learn the the difference between “programmable” ASICs and how to determine the difference between various ASIC models.

Networking 101: Quality of Service

How well do you know QoS? We all throw the term around but are we all truly comfortable with it? Jimmy Ray breaks it down at the packet level and shares the one rule you must never forget.

Networking 101: Switch Latency

Understanding how switch performance is measured can make the difference with application performance. The terminology of switch latency in various switching methods and the methodology to obtain the most accurate latency measurements make it easy to play games with the numbers. Watch this episode of Networking 101 with Jimmy Ray from TechWiseTV and arm yourself with knowledge.

Making the jump to IP Telephony

March 7, 2012 at 4:32 am PST

It had been 2009 when we first did a show breaking down the ‘how to’ for making the move from a traditional PBX (TDM) to a IP based system.  The industry has come a long way and we are well past the days of trying to make the technology argument. Its the only way to go these days thankfully but questions still come up on where the gotcha’s may lie…so we did what we do best…we made a video.

The episode itself is long gone but I always think its fun to look back.  Here is the promo for that first show we did..

Unified Communications on the Unified Compute System

March 6, 2012 at 9:43 am PST

What is the saying, two great tastes that taste great (better) together?  This is in essence, the best way to describe the value of putting your Cisco Unified Communications on the Cisco Unified Computing Platform.  While its certainly logical that we do something like this but and to the benefit of our customers, we have steadily increased the number of materials that help explain not just why this can be a huge cost and workflow savings, but also how one goes about doing it.

You can get a lot of written details but we of course suggest you watch one of our latest in the ‘Fundamentals’ series to get you ready.

Bonus points for the learners among you after the jump.

Networking 101: What are Fiber Optics?

February 24, 2012 at 9:29 am PST

Not all Streams are Created Equal

February 7, 2012 at 4:11 am PST

It can be so easy to be mislead by vendors claiming incredible bandwidth gains offered by their new ’3 Spatial Streams’ wireless access points. The tricky part is that none of them are outright lying, they are simply describing a reality that nobody lives in.  Cisco released the new 3600 series access points at CiscoLive London last week. We have also had fun showing the incredible bandwidth gains available through this extra stream -- but we did it with custom designed silicon to create a 4x4 radio.  Why is this valuable to you? Is it not just ‘more is better?’  Hardly.  The true genius being offered here is only clear when you understand some basics of how radios work.  Multiple capabilities unique to Cisco come into play here such as ClientLink and CleanAir. Watch this ‘Fundamentals of Spatial Streams’ to arm yourself with knowledge you can apply right away. It will be the best 6 minutes of your life (today at least).

When you are ready to go deeper

The MPLS Alternative

February 6, 2012 at 2:57 am PST

One of the many, but popular announcements at CiscoLive in London last week is the release of Cisco Easy Virtual Network.  We did our part by releasing a ‘Fundamentals of EVN’ that we think can give you everything you need to know in about 6 minutes.

Big thanks to the EVN team who worked with us to produce this.  Andy Kessler (who is featured in our upcoming episode 112), Sehjung Hah and Gary Proefke.

Join us at CiscoLive London?

January 3, 2012 at 1:12 pm PST

We had so much fun last year…and so far, they are letting us come back.  We had fun doing a little promo for the trip…an excuse really…to let Jimmy Ray play dress up, let me work on my Alfred Molina impression and most of all…let Producer Steve Ewertz loose so he can shoot/edit/compose the way he likes!

Stirring Up a Magic Brew at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park

December 22, 2011 at 12:08 pm PST

Costumes, painted faces, chants, drums, dances, and the color blue EVERYWHERE – welcome to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, where fans pack in to cheer on the Sporting Kansas City soccer team! The new LIVESTRONG Sporting Park caters to the tech-savvy, culturally diverse, family-oriented crowd. Built for fans that refuse to be spectators.

On a visit to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, Executive ViewPoints talked to fans and ventured into the Kansas City Cauldron – a sea of blue and the liveliest and loudest seats in LIVESTRONG Sporting Park – to find out how they feel about their stadium experience.

I love the KC Cauldron! KC Cauldron is considered the most vocal supporter of Sporting Kansas City and they lived up to their promise on our visit. The singing (and drumming) never stops! So you can prepare for your own fan experience at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, we’ve listed a few of the KC Cauldron songs:

Home

Here We Go

Sporting, Sporting KC

Till the World Ends

We Love Ya

Carefree SKC

Mighty, Mighty Wizards

Vermes’ Army

We Love You Sporting

Which one is your favorite?

(Note on how they do it: With Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi and StadiumVision solutions in place, fans enjoy a state-of-art sports and remain immersed in all of the action throughout the stadium. These offerings are built on top of a Connected Stadium network, which serves as a single platform for innovation and growth.)

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park – Built for fans who refuse to be spectators

December 19, 2011 at 3:29 pm PST

Nearly, twenty thousand fans in seats, all connected, all sharing the same exciting sports experience. Taking and posting pictures to Facebook throughout the game, using Smartphones to stay in touch with friends and tweeting exciting game moments. They use free mobile apps to play team trivia games and earn points at the concession stands. They look up sports stats, check traffic, and buy tickets for the next game. Never a dull moment.

Located in Kansas City and opened in 2011, LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is an innovator in every sense of the word. It is home to a sport that is a relative latecomer in the U.S. – soccer – and it features the world’s most advanced technology – to enable the fans who refuse to be simply spectators. Read More »
