Whether you’re a poet, a painter or a product manager, it’s never easy to send the thing that you’ve been tirelessly toiling on into the world. What if the public rejects it? What if the critics lambaste it? You are proud of what you’ve done, but at the same time you’re incredibly nervous.

Cisco released the Embedded Wireless Controller (EWC) last year to a lot of fanfare and we are happy to report that Miercom, an independent, nonpartisan testing lab, has given us really high marks in the latest assessment entitled: “An Independent Assessment: Simplified Wi-Fi Deployment Using Cisco Embedded Wireless Controller”.

Read the Miercom assessment.

If this is the first time you’ve heard of the Cisco Embedded Wireless Controller, a brief explanation: EWC allows the ability to deploy Cisco Catalyst Controller functionality over Cisco Catalyst access points—as well as Cisco Catalyst switches—through the wireless controller software package via Cisco IOS XE. It’s a more flexible deployment option controlled through a simple WebUI and is ideal for small and medium-sized organizations. The Embedded Wireless Controller supports the physical Cisco Catalyst 9800 controllers’ features and functions ranging from secure guest access to offering seamless software updates and adding new access points without bringing the network to a standstill.

I encourage you to read the entire paper, but I’m excited about sharing the highlights too. Miercom said that, “The Cisco EWC solution is one of the easiest wireless products to deploy that we’ve encountered to date.” The testing lab said that they were able to conduct an initial setup in eight minutes and the Miercom testers were surprised that the deployment didn’t require a reboot after the setup. It shows that this is a nice solution for organizations that don’t have a lot of technical expertise.

And if that wasn’t awesome enough, they continued their high praise by saying that EWC is a “game changer”, poses “an excellent value” and discussed the solutions investment protection due to its scalability.

The report also found that EWC’s Best-in-Class security is far greater than those found in other vendors’ all-in-one controller. Miercom matched Cisco up with vendors such as HPE-Aruba, Ruckus, Huawei and Ubiquity and they learned that the Cisco solution has an “amazing 97% detection rate” which is the highest in the industry. To compare, the industry average is 73%, when Miercom evaluated the other vendors. Thanks to Cisco Umbrella, EWC has some of the best defenses to detect malware, phishing and ransomware than any other Wi-Fi security solutions that Miercom has evaluated.
